OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of curcumin on migration and invasion of papillary thyriod cancer B-CPAP cells. METHODS: B-CPAP cells were treated with 5, 10, 15, or 20 μmol/L curcumin, and the changes in cell survival, migration and invasion were examined using MTT assay and Transwell assay. ROS levels in the treated cells were detected with a DCFH-DA probe. The expression levels of Nrf2 and Keap1 in the cells were determined using Western blotting and qRT-PCR...

There for surgeons generally tends to seek for a primary tumor originating from these organs. Herein a case of endometrial adenocarcinoma recurrence that presented with symptoms of tibial pain is described. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) of thyroid, and to improve the understanding of CASTLE. METHOD: In 6 patients with CASTLE, we performed region VI lymph node dissection, the lesion resection of thyroid lobe and isthmus. After the operation, except one case of 68 years old patient, the rest patients were treated with radiotherapy 60 Gy in anterior cervical region after third week of operation and 5 courses of chemotherapy with cisplatin, each interval of 2 weeks...

AIM: Current reports for the radiation cataracts contained a warning for deterministic effects at 1-2 Gy radiation single exposure for lens. Recently, the German Radiation Protection Board (SSK) published a document (234. SSK-Board) in that threshold dose for radiation cataracts is claimed at 0.5 Gy. The lens of the eye is recognized as one of the most radiosensitive tissues in the human body, and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP 103) has defined a limit of 150 mSv for its exposure...

Epithelial homeostasis incorporates the paradoxical concept of internal change (epithelial turnover) enabling the maintenance of anatomical status quo. Epithelial cell differentiation and cell loss (cell shedding and apoptosis) form important components of epithelial turnover. Although the mechanisms of cell loss are being uncovered the crucial triggers that modulate epithelial turnover through regulation of cell loss remain undetermined. Serotonin is emerging as a common autocrine-paracine regulator in epithelia of multiple organs, including the breast...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Presbycusis is the most prevalent cause of hearing-loss in the older, but pathogenesis is not well-know. The premise of this study is that hyperlipemia increase risk of age-related hearing-loss. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 180 patient more than 65 years-old were studied. All patients had bilateral hearing-loss and no renal, neurological, thyriod or middle-ear pathology. We explored serum levels of cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. We performed tonal audimetry in all patients...

Mutation analyses in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, and mice have identified genes that increase their life-span via hormonal signal transduction, i.e. the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) pathway in nematodes, and the growth hormone (GH)-thyriod stimulating hormone (TSH)-prolactin system in Snell dwarf mouse mutants. We have shown that the GH deficiency due to Pit1 mutation in the long-lived Snell dwarf mice may decrease circulating insulin levels, thereby resulting in a decreased activity of the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway...

One hundred and twenty-nine patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma were treated with radioiodine (I-131) and followed up in our department between the years 1992 and 2000. Thirty-three patients (25.6%) had distant metastases (mean follow-up time was 3.12 +/- 2.9 years). The incidence of distant metastases among patients with papillary carcinoma was higher in our group in comparison with most published studies. The most common sites for distant metastases were the lungs and mediastinum. In 32 of the 33 patients distant metastases were found in those sites...

After a brief outline of the physiology of the thyroid hormones and the laboratory tests measuring thyroid function, the dosage of normalised T4 (T4N) in patients suffering from various thyroid diseases and subjected to surgical operation is discussed. As the fundamental presupposition of thyroid surgery is that the operation is made in conditions of euthyroidism, the use of a quick and reliable preoperative test giving an exact evaluation of the patient's thyrometabolic conditions is necessary. In conclusion it is stated, on the basis of experience acquired in 90 patients operated for various thyriod diseases, that the last thyrometabolic evaluation can be based on T4N dosage...

Morphometrical and histochemical studies were performed to determine the effects of adrenalectomy and hydrocortisone replacement on the rat thyroid. It follows from the performed studies that morphometrical and histochemical changes in the rat thyroid induced by adrenalectomy or hydrocortisone replacement depend upon the duration of the experiment. From the 4th day of the experiment adrenalectomy results in an increase in the volume fraction of the epithelium of the thyroid vesicles with a concomitant decrease of the colloid fraction...
