OBJECTIVE: Islet allotransplantation is a less invasive alternative to surgical pancreas transplantation for Type 1 diabetes, while percutaneous intraportal islet autotransplantation (PIPIAT) is usually performed after pancreatic surgery to prevent diabetes. Our aim was to assess the feasibility, radiological aspects, complications and clinical outcome of PIPIAT following pancreatic surgery for not only chronic pancreatitis but also benign and malignant nodules. METHODS: From 2008 to 2012, 41 patients were enrolled for PIPIAT 12-48 h after pancreatic surgery (extended pancreatic surgery for chronic pancreatitis and benign/malignant neoplasms)...

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to describe efficacy and safety of enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium (EC-MPS) in de novo and maintenance recipients of kidney-pancreas transplant in the clinical practice. METHODS: Observational, multicentre, prospective, 12-month study. RESULTS: We included 24 de novo and 24 maintenance patients. EC-MPS mean (± SD) doses at initiation in de novo patients were 1440 ± 0 vs. 1268 ± 263 mg/d at month 12 (M12)...

The outcome of human islet isolation procedures can be significantly effected by the technique used for pancreas procurement. In fact, the final step of islet purification using discontinuous density gradients requires a significant difference between the density of the islets and the density of the non-endocrine component of the gland. Therefore, any procedure during multi-organ procurement that will result in edema or degranulation of the acinar tissue will result in failure of the islet purification step...

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to analyze acceptance of cadaveric and living organ donation for transplantation among resident doctors, given that they are the new professionals of medicine who will have to encourage and develop transplant programs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A random survey was performed on resident doctors in a third-level hospital with an organ transplant program which is accredited for undergraduate and postgraduate education (n = 171). Attitudes toward cadaveric and living donation were evaluated using a questionnaire including various psychosocial variables that might affect such attitudes...
