Bereavement may trigger different psychological outcomes, such as prolonged grief disorder or post-traumatic growth. The relationship between these two outcomes and potential precipitators remain unknown. The current study aimed to identify classes of Chinese bereaved individuals based on prolonged grief symptoms and post-traumatic growth and to examine predictors for these classes. We used data from 273 Chinese individuals who lost a relative due to disease (92.3%), accident (4.4%) and other reasons (1.8%)...

In 2012, the Chinese government launched a nationwide reform of county-level public hospitals with the goal of controlling the rapid growth of healthcare expenditure. The key components of the reform were the zero markup drug policy (ZMDP), which removed the previously allowed 15% markup for drug sales at public hospitals, and associated increases in fees for medical services. By exploiting the temporal and cross-sectional variations in the policy implementation and using a unique, nationally representative hospital-level dataset in 1880 counties between 2009 and 2014, we find that the policy change led to a reduction in drug expenditures, a rise in expenditures for medical services, and no measurable changes in total health expenditures...

Angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1 R) is a classical G-protein-coupled-receptor (GPCR) displaying complex structure consisting of 7-transmembrane helices connected by intracellular and extracellular loops. Beside Angiotensin II binding within transmembrane sites and mechanically induced ligand free activation, AT1 R can be also activated by agonistic autoantibodies (AT1 R-Ab) recognizing conformational epitopes contained in the second extracellular loop. Direct pathophysiologic involvement of AT1 R-Abs is well established in several autoimmune contexts and organ transplantation (1)...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as one of early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders, is characterized by the following symptoms, including repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, impairments in social interaction, and dysfunctions in communication. ASD afflicts ∼1.5% of children aged 8 years in America and ∼4.5‰ of children aged 0-6 years in China. Existing studies suggest that SH3 and multiple ankyrin repeat domains protein 2 (SHANK2) is implicated in ASD. However, associations between SNPs in SHANK2 introns and ASD risk have been less investigated...

Palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) is a rare group of excessive skin disorder characterized by thickness over the palms and soles. The striate palmoplantar keratoderma (PPKS) is a form in which hyperkeratotic lesions are restricted to the pressure regions extending longitudinally in the length of each finger to the palm. Dominantly inherited mutations in genes including desmoglein 1, desmoplakin and keratin 1 have been suggested as genetic causes of PPKS. In this study, we investigated a three-generation Pakistani family segregating PPKS phenotype in autosomal dominant fashion to identify genetic cause in this family...

There are abundant cattle breeds/populations in China, and the systematic discovery of genomic variants is essential for performing the marker assisted selection and conservation of genetic resources. In the present study, we employed whole transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology for revealing genetic structure among six Chinese cattle populations according to transcriptome-wide SNPs and gene expression. A total of 68,094 variants consisting of 61,754 SNPs and 6340 InDels were detected and widely distributed among all chromosomes, by which the clear patterns of population structures were revealed...

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by progressive weakness and spasticity of lower limbs. To clarify the genetic spectrum and improve the diagnosis of HSP patients, targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) was applied to detect the culprit genes in 55 Chinese HSP pedigrees. The classification of novel variants was based on the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) standards and guidelines. Patients remaining negative following targeted NGS were further screened for gross deletions/duplications by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA)...

BACKGROUND The method of multiple targets overall control is increasingly used to predict the main active ingredient and potential target group of Chinese traditional medicines and to determine the mechanisms involved in their curative effects. Qingdai is the main traditional Chinese medicine used in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), but the complex active ingredients and antitumor targets in treatment of CML have not been clearly defined in previous studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS We constructed a protein-protein interaction network diagram of CML with 638 nodes (proteins) and 1830 edges, based on the biological function of chronic myelocytic leukemia by use of Cytoscape, and we determined 19 key gene nodes in the CML molecule by network topological properties analysis in a data bank...

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease (GD) is one of the most common lysosomal storage diseases resulting from a deficiency of glucocerebrosidase. Three main types have been described, with type 2 being the most rare and severe form. Here we investigated the clinical symptoms and mutation spectrum in 20 unrelated type 2 GD patients. METHOD: The diagnosis of GD was based on the acid β-glucocerebrosidase (GBA) enzyme activity and direct sequencing of the GBA gene. GBA activity was measured in leukocytes and the GBA gene was amplified by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)...
