Exploring traditional medicines may lead to the development of low-cost and non-toxic cancer preventive agents. Si-Wu-Tang (SWT), comprising the combination of four herbs, Rehmanniae, Angelica, Chuanxiong, and Paeoniae, is one of the most popular traditional Chinese medicines for women's diseases. In our previous studies, the antioxidant Nrf2 pathways were strongly induced by SWT in vitro and in vivo. Since Nrf2 activation has been associated with anticarcinogenic effects, the purpose of this study is to evaluate SWT's activity of cancer prevention...

Radix salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen in Chinese), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb, has been used for centuries to treat liver diseases. In this study, the preventive and curative potential of Danshen aqueous extract on acute/chronic alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was studied. The in vivo results indicated that Danshen could alleviate hepatic inflammation, fatty degeneration, and haptic fibrogenesis in ALD and NAFLD models. In the aspect of mechanism of action, the significant reduction in MDA levels in both ALD and NAFLD models implies the decreased levels of oxidative stress by Danshen...

Prey have evolved a number of defenses against predation, and predators have developed means of countering these protective measures. Although caterpillars of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus L., are defended by cardenolides sequestered from their host plants, the Chinese mantid Tenodera sinensis Saussure guts the caterpillar before consuming the rest of the body. We hypothesized that this gutting behavior might be driven by the heterogeneous quality of prey tissue with respect to toxicity and/or nutrients...

The botanical compound allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is toxic to many microorganisms and insects. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of AITC on the Bradysia odoriphaga (Diptera: Sciaridae), as well as the seeds and seedlings of Chinese chive. AITC was toxic to all four stages of B. odoriphaga. The adult was significantly more sensitive (LC50 = 7.43 µl liter-1) to AITC than the other three stages, which had no difference in sensitivity to the chemical. The control efficacy of AITC against B. odoriphaga was much better in the greenhouse than that in the field...

The gender disparity observed in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) suggests an important role of estrogens in HCC pathogenesis. In this study, we conducted a case-control study to investigate whether breast cancer risk-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located at estrogens loci identified by genome-wide association studies (GWASs) also predispose to HCC in a Chinese population. Three candidate SNPs at 6q25.1 were genotyped in 2,025 HCC cases and 2,032 healthy controls. Differential expression analyses and expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analyses were conducted to further explore the role of significant SNPs and genes they reside in...

Temperate steppe is extremely sensitive to the current global changes. However, what are the main environmental variables driving microbial diversity in temperate steppe are still unclear, something that impairs doing predictions about the expected effects of global changes on microbe-mediated ecological functions. This is why, in this study, the relationship between soil microbial diversity and environmental variables in Chinese temperate steppe is investigated. In this study, significant correlations between soil bacterial α-diversity and mean annual precipitation (MAP) and the aridity index (AI) were observed at the whole region scale...
