Pulmonary insufficiency is the primary cause of death in cases of major burns accompanied by inhalation damage. It is important to consider the impact on the face and neck in flame burns. Early implementation of bronchial hygiene measures and oxygenation treatment in inhalation injury can reduce mortality. This case series presents the effects of high-flow nasal oxygen application on patient outcomes in major burns and inhalation injury. This report discusses three different patients. One patient, a 29-year-old male with 35% TBSA burns, received high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) treatment for inhalation injury on the sixth day after the trauma...

BACKGROUND: Preoxygenation before anaesthesia induction is routinely performed via a tight-fitting facemask or humidified high-flow nasal oxygen. We hypothesised that effective preoxygenation, assessed by end-tidal oxygen (EtO2) levels, can also be performed via a standard nasal cannula. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy of preoxygenation between a traditional facemask, humidified high-flow nasal oxygen and a standard nasal cannula. DESIGN: A volunteer, randomised, crossover study...

PURPOSE: To investigate the topographic characters of inter-individual variations of the macular choroidal thickness (CT). METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Macular CT data for 900 0.2 × 0.2-mm grids from 410 healthy eyes were collected from swept-source optical coherence tomography. Following the analysis of factors associated with mean CT, the β-coefficients of the included associated factors in each grid were summarized for choroidal thickness changes analysis...

INTRODUCTION: Gastroparesis is a chronic disorder characterized by decreased gastric emptying and presents with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain which impacts patients' quality of life greatly. The treatment modalities available for gastroparesis have been expanding over the past 2 decades. Currently there are multiple options available for gastroparesis albeit with only one FDA approved medication until June of 2021. AREAS COVERED: We review the different treatments available for gastroparesis and discuss the recently FDA approved intranasal formulation of metoclopramide...

PURPOSE: To present a method for analyzing breathing modes with infrared thermography. METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study used 38 thermal images of inspiration and expiration with nasal breathing and simulated mouth breathing in four nasal breathers without respiratory complaints. Three different data selection forms (line, rectangle, and ellipse) were used to extract the minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures of the regions of interest (nose and mouth) using the FLIR Tools® software...

OBJECTIVES: Fetuses with single ventricle physiology (SVP) exhibit reductions in fetal cerebral oxygenation with associated delays in fetal brain growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Maternal supplemental oxygen (MSO) has been proposed to improve fetal brain growth but current evidence on dosing, candidacy, and outcomes are limited. In this pilot study, we evaluated the safety and feasibility of continuous low-dose MSO in the setting of SVP. METHODS: This single-centre, open-label, pilot phase 1 safety and feasibility clinical trial included 25 pregnant individuals with a fetal diagnosis of SVP...

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is most common in populations of Northern European ancestry where the F508del variant predominates. In 2020, Iceland became a member of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry, and we launched an epidemiological study of CF in Iceland. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and the genetic variants present in the country. Furthermore, we aimed to describe the previous and the current situation regarding lung function, infections, complications, treatment, and follow-up to understand the strengths and weaknesses of CF care in Iceland...

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a transboundary viral infection, affecting cattle with characteristic manifestations involving multiple body systems. A distinctive characteristic of lumpy skin disease is the subclinical disease manifestation wherein animals have viremia and shed the virus through nasal and ocular discharges, while exhibiting no nodules but enlarged lymph nodes that are easily oversighted by inexperienced vets. Further research on the role of subclinically ill animals in the transmission of LSD virus (LSDV) can contribute to the development of more effective tools to control the disease worldwide...

Peripapillary pachychoroid syndrome (PPS) is a rare disease characterized by choroidal thickening around the optic disc. Visual acuity might be impaired secondary to the associated peripapillary intraretinal and/or subretinal fluids. We reported a case of a 70-year-old male patient who presented with a gradual bilateral decrease in vision. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/60 in the right eye and 20/25 in the left eye. Dilated fundus examination showed yellowish peripapillary lesions and intraretinal fluid (IRF) surrounding the optic disc in both eyes...

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystem disease involving cartilaginous and proteoglycan-rich structures. The diagnosis of this disease is mainly suggested by the presence of flares of inflammation of the cartilage, particularly in the ears, nose or respiratory tract, and more rarely, in the presence of other manifestations. The spectrum of clinical presentations may vary from intermittent episodes of painful and often disfiguring auricular and nasal chondritis to an occasional organ or even life-threatening manifestations such as lower airway collapse...

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been shown to be an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and intermittent hypoxia is an important pathogenetic factor for it. In the clinic, it was found that most CVD patients combined with OSA were also combined with solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) or thyroid nodules (TN). Are these disorders related to intermittent hypoxia? One study showed that intermittent hypoxia is a pathogenic factor for lung cancer in mice, but there have been no clinical reports...

Nasal obstruction is a commonly reported issue in the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Department. In this case, an early adolescent boy with a long-standing problem of right-sided nasal obstruction since childhood sought consultation. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy revealed a deviation of the nasal septum to the left, coupled with right inferior turbinate hypertrophy, all overlying healthy mucosa. A CT scan of the nose and paranasal sinuses further identified a bony hyperdense lesion with ground glass attenuation, confined to the right inferior turbinate...

Patterns of within-host influenza A virus (IAV) diversity and evolution have been described in natural human infections, but these patterns remain poorly characterized in non-human hosts. Elucidating these dynamics is important to better understand IAV biology and the evolutionary processes that govern spillover into humans. Here, we sampled an IAV outbreak in pigs during a week-long county fair to characterize viral diversity and evolution in this important reservoir host. Nasal wipes were collected on a daily basis from all pigs present at the fair, yielding up to 421 samples per day...
