Systematic outcome assessment is central to ascertaining the impact of treatment services and to informing future treatment initiatives. This project was designed to be conducted within the clinical operations of 4 private addictions treatment centers. A structured interview was used to assess patients' alcohol and other drug use and related variables (on treatment entry and at 1, 3, and 6 months following treatment discharge). The primary outcomes were percentage of days abstinent (PDA) from alcohol and drugs, PDA from alcohol, and PDA from other drugs...

Previous studies established different responses between proximal and distal portions of Schaffer collateral axons during high-frequency and burst stimulation, with distal axons demonstrating biphasic changes in excitability (hyperexcitability followed by depression), but proximal axons showing only monophasic depression. Voltage-dependent potassium (KV) channels are important determinants of axonal excitability, and block of KV channels can promote axon hyperexcitability. We therefore hypothesized that block of KV channels should lead to biphasic response changes in proximal Schaffer collaterals, like those seen in distal Schaffer collaterals...

Intraoperative injury to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a rare but severe complication. The main treatment methods are primary repair and revision with a more constrained implant; however, the clinical outcomes of primary reconstruction without a constrained implant have rarely been reported.A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of iatrogenic injury to the MCL during primary TKA, and to report the clinical outcomes of MCL reconstruction without the use of a constrained device...

Progressive cerebral infarction (PCI) is associated with high rates of mortality and disability. Many studies have shown that Dl-3n-butylphthalide (NBP) is effective against acute ischemic stroke. The administration of NBP can result in an increased number of capillaries in the ischemic region, promote the establishment of collateral circulation, protect the mitochondria, and narrow the infarction area, among other effects. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of NBP for the treatment of PCI...

Proton beam radiotherapy (PBR) has gained acceptance for the treatment of breast cancer because of unique beam characteristics that allow superior dose distributions with optimal dose to the target and limited collateral damage to adjacent normal tissue, especially to the heart and lungs. To determine the compatibility of breast tissue expanders (TEs) with PBR, we evaluated the structural and dosimetric properties of 2 ex vivo models: 1 model with internal struts and another model without an internal structure...

PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: Although sex- and gender-specific analyses have been gaining more attention during the last years they have rarely been performed in orthopaedic literature. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether for injuries of the UCL the specific location of the rupture is influenced by sex. A secondary study question addressed the sex-independent effect of trauma intensity on the rupture site of the UCL. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of all patients with either a proximal or distal bony avulsion or with a mid-substance tear or ligament avulsion of the UCL treated surgically between 1992 and 2015 at two level-I trauma centres...

Anterior cerebral artery (ACA) flow diversion (FD), defined as ipsilateral mean velocity (MV) of at least 30% greater than the contralateral artery, could be seen an indirect sign of leptomeningeal collateralization in the setting of middle cerebral artery occlusion. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the association between dynamic FD and functional outcome in acute anterior stroke patients with large artery occlusion. Acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) or internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusive stroke patients within 12h were recruited...

BACKGROUND: The anterior oblique bundle (AOL) of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is composed of anterior and posterior bands. This study evaluated the anatomy of the anterior and posterior bands in the AOL of the UCL for their separate visualization with ultrasound (US). METHODS: We dissected 18 cadaveric elbow joints and recorded the direction of each band from the lateral view to determine the proper position for the US transducer. To determine the proper inclination of the transducer, we measured the inclinations of each band at the proximal and distal insertions from the transverse view...

Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries have become increasingly prevalent in overhead athletes. The orthopaedic literature contains a wealth of information on operative management of these injuries. However, there are few high-quality longitudinal studies on non-operative care of UCL injuries. The purpose of this review is to describe the non-operative approach to managing UCL injuries, including recommended rehabilitation strategies and predictors of successful non-operative treatment.

Intra-articular entrapment of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a rare but recognised complication of traumatic injury to the posteromedial corner (PMC) of the knee. Considering the MCL is the most commonly injured ligament of the knee this complication is extremely rare with only a handful of cases describing MCL entrapment following distal avulsion of the MCL. We present the first known case of MCL entrapment following proximal avulsion of the MCL and posterior oblique ligament (POL) with the mid-substance of the MCL becoming entrapped in the joint, lying on the superior surface of the medial meniscus and extending up into the intercondylar notch...

Neuropsychological assessments of cognitive dysfunction in cerebrovascular illness commonly target basic cognitive functions involving aspects of memory, attention, language, praxis, and number processing. Here, I highlight the clinical importance of often-neglected social cognition functions. These functions recruit a widely distributed neural network, making them vulnerable in most cerebrovascular diseases. Sociocognitive deficits underlie most of the problematic social conduct observed in patients and are associated with more negative clinical outcomes (compared to nonsocial cognitive deficits)...

Mr Litvinenko died on 23rd November 2006, having been poisoned with polonium-210 on 1st November, with evidence of a previous poisoning attempt during October 2006. Measurements of 210Po in urine samples were made for a large number of people to determine whether they may have been contaminated. In the majority of cases, measured levels were attributable to the presence of 210Po from normal dietary sources. For a small number of cases, elevated levels provided evidence of direct contamination associated with the poisonings...

Viral vectors have been frequently used in a variety of preclinical animal models to deliver genetic constructs into tissues. Among the vectors used, adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) may be targeted to specific tissues, depending on the serotype used. Moreover, they show robust expression for prolonged periods of time and have a low immunogenic potential. Furthermore, AAVs, unlike other vector systems, only display a low rate of genomic integration. However, to ensure efficient transgene production, expression is typically driven by constitutively active promoters, such as the CMV promotor...

INTRODUCTION: Recent literature has reported an association between maternal supine sleep position and stillbirth during late pregnancy. In this position the gravid uterus almost completely obstructs the inferior vena cava. A small number of women experience supine hypotension, thought to be due in part to inadequate collateral venous circulation. The aim of this paper is to review the literature describing the anatomy of the collateral venous system and in particular the azygos system, the abdominal portion of which has not been well studied...
