An endophytic fungus, Mycosphaerella nawae ZJLQ129, was isolated from the leaves of the traditional Chinese medicine Smilax china. From the fermentation broth and mycelium, a dibenzofurane compound (-)mycousnine (1) was isolated. Chemical modification of it to the amide derivative (-)mycousnine enamine (2), which is new to science, was found to have high and selective immunosuppressive activity: similar to cyclosporin A, (-)mycousnine enamine (2) selectively inhibited T cell proliferation, suppressed the expression of the surface activation antigens CD25 and CD69 and the formation and expression of the cytokines interleukin-2 as well as interferon γ in activated T cells, but did not show any effect on the proliferation of B cells and cancer cells (PANC-1 and A549) and the activation of macrophages...

For countries faced with much talk but little action on healthcare reform, China's National Health Guiding Principles (CNHGP), with its 60-year history, may provide a new perspective. There are four values of CNHGP for healthcare reform. First, these principles provide an innovative strategic framework for healthcare reform with three levels, from 'One priority population' to 'Four approaches' and then to 'Two aims.' The second is the importance of mass/grassroots participation, which runs through all three levels of CNHGP...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of senile dementia, which often develops in elderly or presenile individuals. As one of the pathological features of AD, amyloid β‑protein (Aβ) causes energy dysmetabolism, thereby inducing cellular damage and apoptosis. Salidroside is the main active component of the traditional Chinese medicine Rhodiola. Previous studies have demonstrated that salidroside exerts a regulatory role in energy metabolism. However, the role and the mechanism of action of salidroside in AD remain unclear...

Spica Prunellae is the spike of the herb Prunella vulgaris L. in traditional Chinese medicine which is often used for the treatment of various cancers including colorectal cancer. In the present study, we found that a key tumor suppressor, microRNA-34a (miR-34a) is involved in the antitumor activity for Spica Prunellae. Human colon carcinoma HCT-8 cells treated with an ethanol extract of Spica Prunellae (EESP) had significantly decreased cell proliferation and viability, in a dose-dependent manner. Flow cytometry analysis with Annexin V/PI staining analysis revealed that EESP treatment could induce apoptosis of HCT-8 cells...
