We sought to evaluate the rates and predictors of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among members of a structurally-marginalized population of people who use drugs (PWUD) during a targeted, community-wide, vaccination campaign in Vancouver, Canada. Interviewer-administered data were collected from study participants between June 2021 and March 2022. Generalized estimating equation analysis was used to identify factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake, ascertained through a province-wide vaccine registry. Among 223 PWUD, 107 (48...

Bacteria have evolved a defense system to resist external stressors, such as heat, pH, and salt, so as to facilitate survival in changing or harsh environments. However, the specific mechanisms by which bacteria respond to such environmental changes are not completely elucidated. Here, we used halotolerant bacteria as a model to understand the mechanism conferring high tolerance to NaCl. We screened for genes related to halotolerance in Halomonas socia, which can provide guidance for practical application. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis showed that H...

Particularly over the past two decades, the terms sex offender and juvenile sex offender (JSO) have attained increasingly common usage in media and public policy discourse. Although often applied as factual descriptors, the labels may evoke strong subconscious associations with a population commonly presumed to be compulsive, at high risk of re-offense, and resistant to rehabilitation. Such associations, in turn, may exert considerable impact on expressions of support for certain policies as well as public beliefs and opinions about adults and youth who have perpetrated sexual offenses...

A moderately halophilic bacteria designed strain NY-011(T) was isolated from the high salt culture of Dunaliella salina in Chengdu of Sichuan Province, China. The isolate was Gram-negative, nonmotile, rod-shaped and 12.5-21.6 μm in length. Colonies on solid media are circular, wet, smooth and cream. The strain grew optimally at 37 °C, pH 7.0 and in the presence of 8 % NaCl. Acid was produced from glycerol, D-arabinose, glucose, trehalose, inositol, mannose, mannitol, sucrose, maltose and sorbitol. Catalase is produced but not oxidase...
