OBJECTIVE: Knowledge regarding hearing acuity in the nonagenarian age group is sparse. In this study we aimed to advance our understanding of hearing loss in the 10th decade of life. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study in which standardised hearing measurements were performed during home visits, which included care home facilities and nursing homes to maximise participation. STUDY SAMPLE: Two unselected groups of individuals aged 90 ( n  = 42) and 95 ( n  = 49), sampled from the population-based Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies...

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of glioblastoma in very old patients are rising. The standard of care for this cohort is only partially defined and survival remains poor. The aims of this study were to reveal current practice of tumor-specific therapy and supportive care, and to identify predictors for survival in this cohort. METHODS: Patients aged 80 years or older at the time of glioblastoma diagnosis were retrospectively identified in 6 clinical centers in Switzerland and France...

In view of the demographic change, the need for intersectoral care of the aging population has already been identified. The strategies for implementation are diverse and address different approaches, each of which requires different sectors to overlap. This article provides an overview of already completed and ongoing projects for the care of geriatric patients. It becomes apparent that the development of networks as an indispensable basis for intersectoral care cannot be measured in terms of direct intervention effects and therefore makes it difficult to prove the cost-benefit...

In oldest old age (generally considered to be from 85 years onwards), personhood is often called into question, impacting well-being as a result. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this article examines the well-being of oldest old nursing home residents at the intersections of ageism, fraying personhood and fragile social belonging in Danish nursing home care. In Denmark personhood hinges on both independence and social belonging; or "fællesskab." We examine how these concepts are practiced in nursing home care...

INTRODUCTION: Due to the rapid advance of coronavírus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, social distancing was the main way to reduce the transmission of the virus. Although this measure was efficient and necessary, the social distancing had severe consequences for physical function, mainly in older individuals. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of social distancing in the functional and cognitive capacity of community-dwelling oldest-old adults. METHODS: The present study is part of a larger prospective cohort study...

To identify key factors affecting all-cause mortality in the elderly aged 80 years and above. Data from Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2011-2018) were utilized ( N  = 3993). A healthy lifestyle score was obtained by assigning 8 factors: smoking, drinking, exercise, sleep duration, social activity, waist circumference, BMI, and healthful plant-based diet index. Cox regression and decision tree model were used to identify factors influencing the mortality risk. Lifestyle and activities of daily living (ADL) were 2 of the most important modifiable factors influencing the mortality risk of the oldest seniors...

Metastatic urothelial carcinoma is a rare cause of pleural effusions. We report a case of urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract in an oldest-old male patient, a smoker, with situs inversus totalis, that presented uniquely with malignant pleural effusion at presentation without evidence of a primary tumor on imaging. Cytological smears of the massive left pleural effusion revealed epithelioid neoplastic cells arranged in short cords, small-to-large clusters, and raspberry-like morules, mimicking mesothelioma; cell block preparations highlighted the presence of tubules and nest-like structures...

BACKGROUNDS: Adults aged 85 years and older ("oldest-old") are perceived as survivors resilient to age-related risk factors. Although considerable heterogeneity has been often observed in this population, less is known about the unmet needs in health and healthcare service utilization for diverse patients in healthcare systems. We examined racial-ethnic variation in patterns of multimorbidity associated with emergency department (ED), clinic visits, and mortality among the oldest-old patients with multimorbidity...

Data about contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) in oldest old (age ≥85 years) ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients are scarce. We evaluated the incidence and the 1-year prognostic impact of CA-AKI in this population. Patients were included in a multicenter real-world registry, and CA-AKI was defined according to KDIGO (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes) criteria. Major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) were defined as the composite of all-cause death, stroke, unplanned coronary revascularization, and heart failure hospitalization...

BACKGROUND: The underlying pathophysiology of cognitive dysfunction in oldest-old patients with Alzheimer-type dementia (AD) has not been clarified to date. We aimed to determine the factors and brain imaging features associated with cognition in oldest-old patients with AD. METHODS: We enrolled 456 consecutive outpatients with probable AD (145 men and 311 women, age range: 51-95 years). Demographic factors, such as education level, disease duration at initial visit, body mass index, comorbidities, frailty, and leisure activity, and brain imaging features, including severity of medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy, white matter lesions and infarcts, and frequency of posterior cerebral hypoperfusion were compared among pre-old (≤ 74 years), old (75 to 84 years), and oldest-old (≥ 85 years) subgroups...

BACKGROUND: Globally, the oldest old population is expected to triple by 2050. Hospitalization and malnutrition can result in progressive functional decline in older adults. Minimizing the impact of hospitalization on functional status in older adults has the potential to maintain independence, reduce health and social care costs, and maximize years in a healthy state. This study aimed to systematically review the literature to identify nutritional interventions that target physical function, body composition, and cognition in the older population (≥ 75 years)...

The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between handgrip strength and mortality in Brazilian frail nonagenarians and centenarians. Eighty-one oldest old were included (mean age [SD]: 94.2 [3.8] years). Data on strength was assessed by handgrip strength. Mortality rate of the participants was evaluated at 1-year follow-up after the functional assessment. A logistic regression analysis was used to assess differences in categories of handgrip strength between groups regarding the mortality rate...
