BACKGROUND: Virological failures on combined antiretroviral therapy still occur. Boosted protease inhibitor ( Pl/r)- based therapy is a commonly used option after non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor ( NNRTI) failure, but whether two fully active nucleoside reverse transciptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are required is unknown. We investigated the effect of an NRTI backbone in individuals receiving Pl/r after failing NNRTI-based combined antiretroviral therapy. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis of the UK Collaborative HIV Cohort (CHIC) and the UK HIV Drug Resistance Database to identify individuals who failed first-line NNRTI and two NRTIs, and switched to Pl/r-based therapy between January 1999 and December 2008 was conducted...

Data of the last decade on the studies of influence of various inductors of microorganism uncultured state and reasons of reversion that include not only effect of appropriate cultivation conditions but also simple cancellation of unfavorable effects are analyzed. Reasons for transition to uncultured state are discussed; those could be a variety of factors such as heat, alkaline, acid and osmotic stress. Factors that promote recovery from uncultured state with the main being Rpf (Resustication promoting factor) factor isolated from Micrococcus luteus and cancellation of endogenic peroxide effect by addition of catalase and sodium pyruvate are analyzed...

A retrospective study on complications especially related to operative or postoperative management was carried out in 1000 pacemaker implantations in 717 patients between September, 1972 and December, 1986. In 33 of our series (4.8%), 24 pacing failure occurred within two weeks of implantation. Flange-type leads had the highest incidence of complications. Wedging the electrode close to the longitudinal axis of the heart was found to be the best placing, assuming that the tip of the electrode and the section immediately adjacent were pointing downward...

Based on a limited number of biochemical properties, a system for biotyping Haemophilus influenzae (M. Kilian, Acta Pathol. Microbiol, Scand. Sect. B82:835-842, 1976) was used to analyze the relationship of biotype to source of infection and antibiotic resistance for 600 clinical strains. The distribution of biotypes from bacteremic patients was significantly different (P less than 0.001) from the distribution of biotypes from nonbacteremic patients. Although there appeared to be a correlation between biotype and source of isolation, no single biotype correlated with a specific clinical syndrome in bacteremic patients...
