Pebbles is a user-friendly software program which implements an accurate, unbiased, and fast method to measure the morphology of a population of nanoparticles (NPs) from TEM micrographs. The morphological parameters of the projected NP shape are obtained by fitting intensity models to the TEM micrograph. Pebbles can be used either in automatic mode, where both fitting and validation are reliably carried out with minimal human intervention, and in manual mode, where the user has full control on the fitting and validation steps...

BACKGROUND: Travel medicine is the medical subspecialty which promotes healthy and safe travel. Numerous studies have been published that provide evidence for the practice of travel medicine, but gaps exist. METHODS: The Research Committee of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) established a Writing Group which reviewed the existing evidence base and identified an initial list of research priorities through an interactive process that included e-mails, phone calls, and smaller meetings...

Usually, insulinomas are small sized, insulin secreting, benign tumors of the pancreas, and require surgical treatment. We report the case of a female patient, of 61 years old, with pancreatic insulinoma localized in the junction between the head and the istm of the pancreas, of 1,4 cm in size, which induced hypoglycemia due to endogenous insulin hypersecretion. The tumor was removed by laparoscopic enucleation in March 2009. In the postoperative period, the blood glucose level came back to normal.

The diagnostic attitude of western physicians toward migrants' complaints is often an unstable balance between the obstinate search for exotic tropical diseases and the overappreciation of the cultural dimensions of symptoms. Such attitude may divert attention from organic diseases. The careful assessment of all levels of possible misunderstandings (prelinguistic, linguistic, metalinguistic, cultural, and metacultural) may help the physician to discriminate between illness and disease. The long and difficult itinerary leading to the correct diagnosis of congenital myopathy in a migrant from Senegal is described, together with the barriers encountered by the caring staff...

BACKGROUND: Access to the Internet and electronic mail has created opportunities for online discussion that can facilitate medical education and clinical problem solving. Research into the use of these information technologies is increasing and the analysis of these tools can support and guide the activities of professional organizations, including educational endeavors. OBJECTIVE: The initial objective was to analyze patterns of information exchange on the International Society of Travel Medicine's (ISTM) travel health electronic mailing list related to a specific area of society interest...

BACKGROUND: Influenza is the most common vaccine-preventable disease in travelers. It circulates year-round in the tropics, November to March in the northern hemisphere (NH), and April to October in the southern hemisphere (SH). In 2005, approximately 8.5 million US adults aged 18 years and older traveled to the Caribbean. A similar number traveled to the tropics and the SH. SH formulation of influenza vaccine is not available in the United States. We surveyed International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) members to ask if they would use SH influenza vaccine if available...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this present report was to analyze the patients referred to us with the presumptive diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma (STS). METHODS: We reviewed all patients referred to us with suspected soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the extremities or trunk over a 12-year period. RESULTS: We treated 597 patients with soft tissue tumors. Open biopsy revealed soft tissue sarcoma in 318 cases, benign mesenchymal tumor in 124 cases and isolated metastases (ISTM) from carcinomas in 98 patients; other pathologies were found in 57 patients...

Although most current stroke intervention trials use disability scales to determine outcome, little is known about the sensitivity to change of these scales. The use of a more sensitive measure would increase the statistical power of rehabilitation treatment trials. We applied four well-known disability scales to a group of stroke rehabilitation inpatients to compare sensitivity to change. Ninety-five consecutive admissions to a stroke rehabilitation service were assessed for disability on admission and discharge...

GeoSentinel is a network of 22 member travel/tropical medicine clinics (14 in the United States and 8 in other countries) initiated in 1995 by the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM). GeoSentinel is based on the concept that these clinics are ideally situated to effectively detect geographic and temporal trends in morbidity among travelers. The core surveillance tool is a single-page faxable form submitted to a central data site for each post-travel patient, including immigrants, refugees, and foreign visitors...

The Canadian physiotherapy profession developed from a small group of British nurse-masseuses, the Incorporated Society of Trained Maseuses (ISTM). In the early 20th century, ISTM-certified massage practitioners and remedial gymnasts began to organize to form a society that would strive for professional recognition and protection in Canada. The fledgling physiotherapy profession sought and received assistance from the medical profession. In return, physiotherapists accepted medical supervision. The two world wars provided impetus to the development of physiotherapy, in achieving both professional status and expansion of demand for physiotherapy services...

Experiments were done in vivo in order to compare the ability of Trypanosoma cruzi bloodstream trypomastigotes (BTr), amastigotes (Am), metacyclic trypomastigotes (MTr) and epimastigotes (Ep) to proliferate in the peritoneal macrophages of the following groups of A/Sn mice: actively immunized with increasing doses of living BTr (AIM); mice passively immunized with homologous immune serum (ISTM); mice passively transfused with normal homologous serum (NSTM) and normal mice (NM). Parasite load was evaluated by counting the number of infected peritoneal macrophages harvested on the 4th day after i...
