Increasing evidence has shown that insulin resistance in omental visceral adipose tissue (OVAT) is a characteristic of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The present study aimed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and their associated functions and pathways involved in the pathogenesis of GDM by comparing the expression profiles of OVATs obtained from pregnant Chinese women with and without GDM during caesarian section. A total of 935 DEGs were identified, including 450 downregulated and 485 upregulated genes...

Southern-Hemisphere terrestrial communities from the early Paleocene are poorly known, but recent work on Danian plant fossils from the Salamanca Formation in Chubut Province, Argentina are providing critical data on earliest Paleocene floras. The fossils described here come from a site in the Salamanca Formation dating to ca. 1 million years or less after the end-Cretaceous extinction event; they are the first fossil flowers reported from the Danian of South America, and possible the entire Southern Hemisphere...

Biosurfactants, surface-active amphiphilic compounds, despite having a wide range of applications, have a high cost of production, which severely restricts their use. For cheaper production of biosurfactant, we investigated the potential of the indigenously isolated biosurfactant producing organism, Bacillus subtilis ANR 88, to grow on different cheap carbon sources (molasses, whey, and extracts of potato peels, orange peels, banana peels, and bagasse). We found that, B. subtilis ANR 88 used significant amounts of total sugar to produce cell biomass and biosurfactant...

The present study describes Demidospermus spirophallus n. sp. and Demidospermus prolixus n. sp. (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) from the siluriform catfish Loricaria prolixa Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1978 (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from the state of São Paulo, Brazil, supported by morphological and molecular data. In addition, notes on the circumscription of the genus with a redescription of Demisdospermus anus are presented. Demidospermus spirophallus n. sp. differed from other congeners mainly because of the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO), which exhibited 2½ counterclockwise rings, a tubular accessory piece with one bifurcated end and a weakly sclerotized vagina with sinistral opening...

Athyrium haleakalae K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner (Athyriaceae), a small lithophytic fern from East Maui, Hawaiian Islands, is described and illustrated. Notes on its distribution, ecology, and conservation status are also presented. The new species appears to be an obligate rheophyte, preferring sites of fast moving water along concave walls of streams and waterfalls. Athyrium haleakalae differs from the only other known Hawaiian Athyrium, Athyrium microphyllum (Sm.) Alston, in having rhizomes 1-3 cm long and lanceolate blades 1- to 2-pinnate-pinnatifid, 3-8(-11) × 1-3(-4) cm, as compared to Athyrium microphyllum having rhizomes (10-)15-30 cm long and ovate to ovate-triangular blades 3-pinnate-pinnatifid to 4-pinnate, 30-82 × 20-50 cm...

Algal bloom is typically caused by aberrant propagation of a single species, resulting in its predomination in the local population. While environmental factors including temperature and eutrophication are linked to bloom, the precise mechanism of its formation process is still obscure. Here, we isolated a bacterial strain that promotes growth of Heterosigma akashiwo, a Raphidophyceae that causes harmful algal blooms. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence, the strain was identified as Altererythrobacter ishigakiensis, a member of the class Alphaproteobacteria...

We report a case of a compassionate treatment of a ruptured thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm in a 92-year-old patient. Patient was admitted to our emergency department for acute onset of pain irradiating to the back. Computed tomographic angiography showed the presence of a thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm with a contained rupture at infrarenal level. Given of the presence of a relative healthy visceral aorta, we decided to treat the patient by Ovation(®) (Endologix, Irvine, CA - USA) implantation in an off-label fashion...

BACKGROUND: Ovation aortic stent-graft system is a new device for the endovascular treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms achieving fixation via a 35-mm long, rigid anchored suprarenal stent and sealing stent at the infrarenal level by a means of a polymer-filling pair of inflatable O-rings, which cause narrowing of flow lumen and regional stenosis. Thus, concerns have been raised regarding hemodynamic consequences associated with this new design. Our preliminary report showed no significant increase of aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) immediately after implantation of the ovation in 3 patients...

The Ovation RNA-Seq Kit provides a fast and simple method for preparing amplified cDNA from total RNA. Amplification is initiated both at the 3' ends of the transcripts and across the entire range of transcribed sequences; thus, this approach is ideal for next-generation sequencing, because the reads are distributed across the transcript types. The amplified cDNA produced in this protocol is used to create libraries optimized for use in the Illumina Genome Analyzer II platform. A procedure for removing small degraded RNAs before the sample is processed into cDNA is also included...
