We report a case of a compassionate treatment of a ruptured thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm in a 92-year-old patient. Patient was admitted to our emergency department for acute onset of pain irradiating to the back. Computed tomographic angiography showed the presence of a thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm with a contained rupture at infrarenal level. Given of the presence of a relative healthy visceral aorta, we decided to treat the patient by Ovation(®) (Endologix, Irvine, CA - USA) implantation in an off-label fashion...

BACKGROUND: Ovation Aortic Stent-Graft System is a new device for the endovascular treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms achieving fixation via a 35-mm long, rigid ancored suprarenal stent and sealing stent at the infrarenal level by a means of a polymer-filling pair of inflatable O-rings which cause narrowing of flow lumen and regional stenosis. Thus, concerns have been raised regarding hemodynamic consequences associated with this new desing . Our preliminary report showed no significant increase of aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) immediately after implantation of the Ovation in 3 patients...

The Ovation RNA-Seq Kit provides a fast and simple method for preparing amplified cDNA from total RNA. Amplification is initiated both at the 3' ends of the transcripts and across the entire range of transcribed sequences; thus, this approach is ideal for next-generation sequencing, because the reads are distributed across the transcript types. The amplified cDNA produced in this protocol is used to create libraries optimized for use in the Illumina Genome Analyzer II platform. A procedure for removing small degraded RNAs before the sample is processed into cDNA is also included...

A new genus and species of monogenean belonging to the Gyrodactylidae, Citharodactylus gagei n. gen. et n. sp. (Plathyhelminthes, Monogenea), is described from the gills of the moon fish, Citharinus citharus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire), a characiform fish collected from Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. The new viviparous genus can be readily distinguished from the six other gyrodactylid genera recorded from Africa and from the other viviparous genera within the Gyrodactylidae based on the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO), which consists of a muscular ovate organ with an opening onto the tegument through which the narrow tapered end of a sclerotised curved cone-shaped structure protrudes...

The Ovation Abdominal Stent Graft System is a trimodular endoprosthesis planned to overcome the limitations of currently available stent grafts, allowing complex iliac and femoral access and providing a proximal seal in challenge infrarenal neck morphology. The proximal sealing is achieved by means of a network of inflatable rings filled with low-viscosity radiopaque polyethylene glycol-based polymer during stent-graft deployment. The leakage of polymer outside the channel to fill the rings into the vascular system may induce an hypersensitivity reaction and anaphylactic shock...

The Galeommatoidea is a bivalve superfamily that exhibits high species diversity in shallow waters. Many members of this superfamily are associated commensally with burrowing marine invertebrates in benthic sediments. The genus Borniopsis is known only from eastern Asia and exhibits high host diversity (e.g., mantis shrimps, crabs, holothurians, sipunculans and echiurans). A new species, Borniopsis mortoni sp. n., is described from mud flats at the mouth of the Souzu River, southwestern Shikoku Island, Japan...

Bio-adhesion is a common and crucial process in nature and is used by several different species for camouflage, prey capture, hatching or to avoid drifting. Four genera of cephalopods belonging to four different families (Euprymna, Sepiolidae; Idiosepius, Idiosepiidae; Nautilus, Nautilidae; and Sepia, Sepiidae) produce glue for temporary attachment. Euprymna species live in near-shore benthic habitats of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, are nocturnal and bury into the seafloor during the day. The animals secrete adhesives through their epithelial glands to completely coat themselves with sand...

An ideal emergence profile is vital for maintaining gingival health and developing esthetics. The ovate pontic which mimics a natural tooth gives the most appropriate emergence profile. For a successful ovate pontic restoration, an alveolar ridge of sufficient height and width is necessary to enhance the deficient ridge and to achieve an esthetic emergence profile. Interpositional graft was carried out along with ovate pontic to achieve an ideal esthetic restoration. After three months of the postoperative period, there was an increased horizontal dimension in the deficient ridge and an esthetic emergence profile...

AIM: One of the technical problems which can be encountered during the endovascular repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms, is represented by the challenge of cannulation of the contralateral gate after the opening of the main body of the endograft, especially in case of tortuous aorta-iliac anatomy. Aim of this work is to propose a hypothesis of simplification, verifying the possibility to maximize the area available for the cannulation of the contralateral gate by simulating an oblique distal end of the leg of the most used devices, without affecting the correct sealing between the main body and the iliac extension...

PURPOSE: To investigate if the routine use of an aortic balloon within 15-30 min after Ovation stent graft ring inflation would resolve any inflow stenosis, which may reach 60 %, at the level of the sealing rings. Moreover, we estimated the potential hemodynamic compromise in these patients during rest and exercise. METHODS: Following 3-dimensional reconstruction of AAA models, cross-sectional area of the infrarenal aorta just proximal the sealing mechanism (A aort, R aort, respectively) and internal area at the site of stenosis (A int, R int, respectively) were measured for 83...

A new feather mite species, Trouessartia sechellarum sp. n. (Astigmata: Analgoidea: Trouessartiidae), is described from the Seychelles magpie-robin Copsychus sechellarum (Passeriformes: Muscicapidae), an endangered endemic passerine bird inhabiting the Seychelles Islands. The most clear features distinguishing this mite from the related species, T. microfolia Gaud, 1952, are as follows: in both sexes, setae c2 do not exceed 30 μm and are subequal in length to setae c3 and sRIII; in males, the hysteronotal shield is completely split into the prohysteronotal and lobar parts by a narrow groove, and the terminal lamellae are attenuate apically; in females, the median part of the hysteronotal shield bears numerous ovate lacunae, the terminal cleft width is approximately equal to the opisthosomal lobe width, and the collar of the spermathecal head is smooth...
