Hepatic hemangioma represents the most common benign primary hepatic neoplasm. Although most such tumors are small and asymptomatic, giant hepatic hemangioma is frequently symptomatic, and requires intervention. Moreover, diffuse multiple hepatic hemangiomatosis occupying almost the entire liver is extremely rare in adults, and the optimal management for this condition is unclear. We report a case of a rapidly growing, symptomatic giant hepatic hemangioma with diffuse hepatic hemangiomatosis in a 50-year-old female patient who was treated by living-donor liver transplantation...

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by vascular thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity with the persistent presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). Progress is being made in understanding the pathogenesis of the syndrome, but difficulties persist in the identification of patients at risk for thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity. Beta-2 glycoprotein I (β2GPI), a plasma protein consisting of five sushi domains, is thought to be the main antigenic target of aPLs. Antibodies recognizing domain I of β2GPI are predominantly present in patients with an elevated risk of thrombosis, whereas antidomain IV/V antibodies are found in nonthrombotic autoimmune diseases...

Preeclampsia (PE) is involved in a group of obstetrical conditions closely related by the presence of placental dysfunction (PD), which also includes intrauterine growth restriction and placental abruption. The timely and accurate recognition and management of PE are often challenging because diagnostic criteria are still based on nonspecific signs and symptoms and because common severity criteria correlate poorly with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. The discovery of the role of angiogenesis-related factors - soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) - in the underlying pathophysiology of PD has marked an important step for improving its early diagnosis and prognosis assessment before gestational week 34...

The rapid influx of married immigrant women from low-income Asian countries is a concern in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. In South Korea, 1 in 10 couples includes a Korean man and a migrant woman, increasing the need for prenatal and postnatal care interventions. Studies published in English or Korean after 2000 were retrieved from 8 databases and reviewed via a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of prenatal and postnatal psychosocial and educational interventions in Korea. Of 3583 records, 10 studies (1 randomized controlled trial [RCT] and 9 non-RCTs) involving 408 married immigrant women fulfilled the inclusion criteria...

BACKGROUND: There are few studies of careful examination of wildlife casualties in Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers. These studies are essential for detecting menaces to wild species and providing objective criteria about cost-benefit of treatments in those centers. The release rate is considered the main outcome indicator, but other parameters such as length of stay at the center and a cost-benefit index expressed as number of released animals per euro and day, could be used as reliable estimators of the rehabilitation costs...

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming ubiquitous in everyday life due to their applications in weather forecasting, surveillance, implantable sensors for health monitoring and other plethora of applications. WSN is equipped with hundreds and thousands of small sensor nodes. As the size of a sensor node decreases, critical issues such as limited energy, computation time and limited memory become even more highlighted. In such a case, network lifetime mainly depends on efficient use of available resources...

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI) after noncardiac surgery has traditionally relied on using relatively insensitive contemporary cardiac troponin (cTn) assays. We hypothesized that using a recently introduced novel high-sensitivity cTnT (hscTnT) assay would increase the detection rate of perioperative MI. METHODS: In this ancillary study of the Vitamins in Nitrous Oxide trial, readjudicated incidence rates of myocardial injury (new isolated cTn elevation) and MI were compared when diagnosed by contemporary cTnI versus hscTnT...

Pain is the most feared symptom amongst individuals living with cancer. In 15% to 20% of patients, conventional analgesic therapy either fails to relieve pain or induces adverse effects. Intrathecal drug delivery systems may present an effective alternative for pain management. The Cancerology Center Paul Papin protocol includes an admixture of morphine, ropivacaine, and ziconotide in intrathecal preparations. These drugs are administered by a fully implantable or an external pump. Syringes or polyolefin infusion bags are prepared for refill just before use...

Northwestern Argentina is endemic for soil-transmitted helminths, and annual deworming programs are carried out in prioritized areas. High prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis was reported in this area; therefore, control programs including ivermectin are being evaluated. The NIE-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for this purpose. In this community trial, two groups of patients, classified according to housing and living conditions were evaluated. Simultaneous with baseline survey, Group 1 was moved to new households with access to improved water and sanitation facilities (W and S), where deworming (MDA, massive drug administration) took place within 1 month; whereas Group 2 received MDA but remained living with unimproved W and S...

Histoplasmosis is one of the most common and deadly opportunistic infections among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome in Latin America, but due to limited diagnostic capacity in this region, few data on the burden and clinical characteristics of this disease exist. Between 2005 and 2009, we enrolled patients ≥ 18 years of age with suspected histoplasmosis at a hospital-based HIV clinic in Guatemala City. A case of suspected histoplasmosis was defined as a person presenting with at least three of five clinical or radiologic criteria...
