Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) present a unique challenge in surgical management due to their inherent predisposition to both bleeding and thrombosis. MPNs are a heterogenous group of acquired clonal conditions. The three classic MPNs are essential thrombocythemia (ET), myelofibrosis (PMF), and polycythemia vera (PV). All subtypes of MPN are associated with both thrombotic and bleeding complications. There are four risk categories for thrombosis in MPN patients: age, thrombosis history, and JAK -2 mutation...

To evaluate the predictive value of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio for the prediction of preeclampsia in women with preexisting diabetes mellitus. This is a monocentric retrospective observational study conducted between January 2018 and December 2020. All singleton pregnancies with preexisting diabetes mellitus, who had a dosage of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio between 30 and 34 + 6 weeks of gestation were included. The principal outcome was preeclampsia. The secondary outcomes were preterm preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, placental abruption, intrauterine fetal death, IUGR, small for gestational age and a composite outcome named "hypertensive disorder of pregnancy" including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count)...

Objectives: To determine the effect of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency on patients' complications and prognosis following allogeneic stem cell hematopoietic transplantation (allo-HSCT) . Methods: 7 patients with G6PD deficiency (study group) who underwent allo-HSCT at Peking University People's Hospital from March 2015 to January 2021 were selected as the study group, and thirty-five patients who underwent allo-HSCT during the same period but did not have G6PD deficiency were randomly selected as the control group in a 1∶5 ratio...

Patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) usually present with minor mucocutaneous bleeding. Corpus luteum hemorrhage (CLH) is generally asymptomatic but may, rarely, lead to severe intraperitoneal bleeding, mostly in patients with coagulation disorders. CLH causing intraperitoneal bleeding has only been described in few individuals with ITP. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to assess the clinical course and incidence of symptomatic CLH in adolescent females with newly diagnosed or chronic ITP...

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) presents as a complex hematologic malignancy with myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative features. Our case report explores the rare coexistence of CMML with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in a 63-year-old female patient. CMML diagnosis followed World Health Organization criteria, and the patient was classified as having high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)-CMML stage 2. Initial treatment with subcutaneous azacytidine for CMML proved partially effective, highlighting persistent severe thrombocytopenia...

ACTN1-related thrombocytopenia is a rare disorder caused by heterozygous variants in the ACTN1 gene characterized by macrothrombocytopenia and mild bleeding tendency. We describe for the first time two patients affected with ACTN1-RT caused by a homozygous variant in ACTN1 (c.982G>A) with mild heart valve defects unexplained by any other genetic variants investigated by WES. Within the reported family, the homozygous sisters have moderate thrombocytopenia and marked platelet macrocytosis with giant platelets, revealing a more severe haematological phenotype compared to their heterozygous relatives and highlighting a significant effect of allelic burden on platelet size...

The present study for the first time was aimed to assess novel pro-coagulant, anti-coagulant and anti-platelet proteins, named EC1.5 (a) , EC5.1 (b) and EC4 (a) from Iranian Echis Carinatus (IEC) venom. These peptides were purified by multi-step chromatography methods. Hematological properties were measured using activated clotting tests, platelet aggregation studies, and hemorrhage assessment...

Acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) is a rare bleeding disorder that is often underdiagnosed. AVWS typically occurs in adults without a family history of bleeding disorders and with associated conditions such as lymphoproliferative, myeloproliferative, and cardiovascular disorders. Here, we present a case of AVWS in a young patient with essential thrombocythemia and a literature review on AVWS in the setting of essential thrombocythemia.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of platelets is a life-saving medical strategy used worldwide to treat patients with thrombocytopenia as well as platelet function disorders. SUMMARY: Until the end of 1960s, platelets were stored in the cold because of their superior hemostatic functionality. Cold storage of platelets was then abandoned due to better posttransfusion recovery and survival of room temperature (RT)-stored platelets, demonstrated by radioactive labeling studies...

Snake venom metalloproteases (SVMPs) are hydrolytic enzymes dependent on metal binding, primarily zinc (Zn2+ ), at their catalytic site. They are classified into three classes (P-I to P-III). BjussuMP-II, a P-I SVMP isolated from Bothrops jararacussu snake venom, has a molecular mass of 24 kDa. It exhibits inhibitory activity on platelet aggregation and hydrolyzes fibrinogen. TNF-α upregulates the expression of adhesion molecules on endothelial cell surfaces, promoting leukocyte adhesion and migration during inflammation...

Neutrophils play a vital role in the innate immunity by perform effector functions through phagocytosis, degranulation, and forming extracellular traps. However, over-functioning of neutrophils has been associated with sterile inflammation such as Type 2 Diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer and autoimmune disorders. Neutrophils exhibiting phenotypical and functional heterogeneity in both homeostatic and pathological conditions suggests distinct signaling pathways are activated in disease-specific stimuli and alter neutrophil functions...

For patients with chronic hypertension, oral antihypertensive therapy should be initiated or titrated at a blood pressure threshold of 140/90 mm Hg or greater.
