INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the clinical outcomes of the use of the CentriMag acute circulatory support system as a bridge to emergency heart transplantation (HTx). METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis of the clinical outcomes of consecutive HTx candidates included in a multicenter retrospective registry who were treated with the CentriMag device, configured either for left ventricular support (LVS) or biventricular support (BVS). All patients were listed for high-priority HTx...

Secondary arterial hypertension accounts for only 5-10% of cases of arterial hypertension, hence the importance of its clinical suspicion for diagnosis. One of the most common causes of secondary hypertension is renovascular hypertension, caused by renal hypoperfusion and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. In addition to arterial hypertension being one of the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factors in the population, its poor control can cause acute neurological disorders such as Posterior Reversible Leukoencephalopathy syndrome (PRES), being characteristic the appearance of visuals alterations...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has negatively impacted on patients of the whole CKD spectrum, causing high rates of morbi-mortality. SARS-CoV-2 vaccines opened a new era, but patients with CKD (including kidney transplant, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) were systematically excluded from pivotal clinical trials. The Spanish Society of Nephrology promoted the multicentric national SENCOVAC study aimed at assessing immunological responses after vaccination in patients with CKD...

INTRODUCTION: Kidney transplant (KT) recipients have a four-times higher risk of renal malignancies compared to general population. As these patients frequently harbor bilateral or multifocal tumors, the management of renal masses is still under debate. OBJECTIVE: To explore the current management of the native kidney masses in KT patients. ACQUISITION OF EVIDENCE: We performed a literature search on MEDLINE/PubMed database. A number of 34 studies were included in the present review...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Renal transplantation in the pediatric population differs from adults in many aspects. This review will focus on the unique issues of the pediatric recipient. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A narrative review on the scarce literature regarding preoperative evaluation before kidney transplantation of the paediatric recipient with an educational focus was conducted. The literature search allowed for identification of publications in English from January 2000 to October 2022...

INTRODUCTION: In the last 20 years, robotic assisted procedures were evaluated in the field of kidney transplantation to provide a mini-invasive approach for this particularly fragile population. As a relatively new issue, few studies compared open kidney transplantation (OKT) and robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT), mostly in small cohorts. To improve current knowledge, we wanted here to gather comparative data of OKT vs RAKT in a systematic review. METHODS: A systematic review was performed according to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses...

BACKGROUND: hypovitaminosis D is frequent in kidney transplant recipient (KTR) patients and is associated with deleterious effects both at the bone and extraosseous levels. Treatment with cholecalciferol is effective for the normalization of 25(OH)D, demonstrating a beneficial effect on the calcium-tropic axis in other populations; however, its effect on the PTH/vitamin D/calcium and FGF23/klotho/phosphorus axis in RTR has not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of normalization of serum 25(OH)D concentrations on the PTH/vitamin D/calcium-FGF23/klotho/phosphorus axis in KTR treated with cholecalciferol, as well as the association between the components of this axis...

INTRODUCTION: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the gold standard treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Hospital readmissions post-transplant is a common complication and can be considered an indication of avoidable morbidity and hospital quality, and there is a significant correlation between EHR and adverse patient outcomes. This study aimed to assess the readmission rate following kidney transplants, the underlying causes, and possible ways to prevent it. Introduction: Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels occur after kidney transplantation (KTx), and can be associated with increase the risk of graft loss. This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the vitamin D status and association with biomarkers of the renal graft function after KTx. Methods: this longitudinal study included 42 patients evaluated at baseline, 3 and 6 months after KTx. Biodemographic, clinical, and biochemical parameters such as 25(OH)D and parathyroid hormone (PTH), and biomarkers of renal graft function, such as creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), were assessed...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: After kidney transplantation, there is an overall increase in weight, which may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and graft loss. But, not all patients gain weight, and the impact on the graft of this different evolution has not been well studied. The objective was to determine the causes of this different evolution and its effect on the graft. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective single-center cohort study of 201 patients followed up after transplantation, analyzing the determinants of the variation in weight at one year using logistic regression, and its effect on graft survival at the end of follow-up using Cox regression...

Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome after kidney transplantation (KT); however, scarce is known regarding post-KT thrombospondin type-1 domain-containing 7A (THSD7A)-positive MN. Herein, we report on a 72-year-old woman with end-stage kidney disease due to chronic interstitial nephritis (1996). In February 2020, she received a second deceased-donor KT, achieving optimal kidney function but presenting early post-KT proteinuria, reaching up to 1800mg/24h six months after transplantation, controlled with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockade...

Kidney transplantation is the optimal therapy for end-stage kidney disease but limited by the available number of organs. Using HCV+ donors, both in HCV+ and HCV- recipients, is a rational response to the organ shortage. We review the historic experience using HCV+ donors in HCV+ recipients and assess long-term results. We also discuss contemporary practices, including the transplantation of HCV-viremic kidneys into HCV- recipients with different approaches to posttransplant HCV therapy.

BACKGROUND: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) causes immune-mediated hemolysis in solid and bone marrow transplant recipients. Donor-derived antibodies against the recipient erythrocyte drive the pathogenesis. It is a rare entity in kidney transplantation, and most of the cases are self-limited.
