OBJECTIVE: To determine the utility of the motion sensitivity quotient (MSQ) in diagnosing pediatric vestibular migraine (VM) and to characterize the role of motion sensitivity and headache control on vestibular rehabilitation (VR) outcomes in pediatric VM. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis. SETTING: Pediatric tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Children (≤18 years old) with dizziness who completed vestibular testing from January 2016 to August 2022, diagnosed with either VM or another vestibular disorder...

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a debilitating disease that resists medical treatment. Photobiomodulation therapy is one of the promising treatment modalities for CRS. The purpose is to investigate the effect of photobiomodulation therapy on headache, fatigue, sinus opacification, and ostiomeatal complex obstruction in patients with CRS. Thirty-one patients with CRS were randomly divided into photobiomodulation therapy and control groups. The photobiomodulation therapy group received photobiomodulation therapy (2...

Primary headache disorders, such as migraine, account for a significant portion of disability rates worldwide, yet patients still struggle to receive the adequate medical and emotional support necessary to improve health outcomes. Insufficient pain management through either impractical pharmaceutical treatments or absent emotional support networks can worsen physical and mental health outcomes since comorbidities commonly associated with headache include hypertension, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. A lack of awareness on headache pathology and its observable severity can lead to pain-related prejudice that destroys beneficial aspects of patient self-advocacy and self-efficacy, thus potentially discouraging the use of healthcare services in favor of maladaptive coping skills...

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical findings, response to therapy and course of patients with transmural eosinophilic infiltration at temporal artery biopsy (TAB). METHODS: The study consisted of a retrospective cohort of 254 consecutive GCA patients with evidence of transmural inflammation at TAB seen at the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital over a 28-year period. The findings of the 22 patients with eosinophilic infiltration (≥ 20 eosinophils/hpf) at TAB were compared with those of 232 patients without...

Background Chronic epipharyngitis causes postnasal drip, pharyngeal pain, pharyngeal discomfort, headache, and shoulder stiffness. Additionally, autonomic nervous system symptoms such as dizziness, general fatigue, and sleeplessness may occur. It can also contribute to the development of focal diseases. Although epipharyngeal abrasive therapy (EAT) is effective for chronic epipharyngitis involving the abrasion of the epipharynx with a zinc chloride solution, there is a lack of clear diagnostic criteria, and treatment outcomes are rarely reported...

Odontoid osteomyelitis is a rare infectious disease that manifests as fever and posterior neck pain, while crowned dens syndrome is a relatively common inflammatory disorder with similar signs and symptoms. We describe the case of a 90-year-old woman presenting with fever, posterior neck pain, throat pain, and headache. Crowned dens syndrome was initially diagnosed based on the clinical picture and calcification around the odontoid process on cervical spine CT. However, the diagnosis was revised to odontoid osteomyelitis following the detection of  Staphylococcus aureus  in blood cultures that were performed due to the presence of headache...

AIMS: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and mental health outcomes among patients with migraine headaches. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 262 subjects were included. The dietary intakes were collected using a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Items were scored according to their inflammatory potential, so a higher DII indicated a more pro-inflammatory diet. The association between DII and the mental health of participants was investigated using multinomial logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported...

Orofacial pain is a worldwide pain problem with many patients unable to find appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Orofacial pain includes pain arising from the odontogenic and nonodontogenic structures in the head and neck region. Dental clinicians need to have a thorough knowledge and skill to diagnose, manage and treat patients with odontogenic pain or refer patients for treatment of non-odontogenic pain to specialists such as Orofacial pain specialist, neurologist, otolaryngologist, rheumatologist, etc. More often, dentists diagnose patients with a temporomandibular disorder and when treatment is ineffective, term it "atypical facial pain"...

Physical modalities, including acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, and spinal manipulation, are commonly sought for migraine headache management. Acupuncture has been helpful in management of migraine, particularly as an adjunct to standard therapy. Some studies support acupuncture in combination with electroacupuncture and a traditional Chinese medicine form of massage called tuina as beneficial. An estimated 15% of patients with migraine seek spinal manipulation with osteopathic physicians or chiropractors, though evidence of benefit is lacking and potential for adverse effects is low but present...

Bacterial meningitis in pediatric populations presents a formidable challenge, necessitating careful evaluation and swift intervention. The clinical spectrum of pediatric bacterial meningitis requires a clear understanding, considering its diverse presentations, risk factors, and evolving diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We present the case of an eight-year-old male who presented with an acute onset of fever, severe headache, and vomiting following an upper respiratory tract infection. A physical examination revealed meningeal irritation signs, altered consciousness, and focal seizures...

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reaction (ADR) is a global and frequently occurring medical emergency with increased cases of mortality annually. ADRs can occur with the use of all drugs including artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs) which are currently the treatment of choice for acute uncomplicated malaria globally. Numerous doses of ACTs are administered daily in malaria endemic areas. AIMS: This study determined the incidence, pattern of presentation and factors associated with ADRs to two ACTs- artemisinin piperaquine (AP) and artemether-lumefantrine (AL) among children with confirmed acute uncomplicated malaria in Ibadan, Nigeria...

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe thalassemia may experience adverse effects from transfusion such as fever, rash, and iron overload after long-term transfusion therapy. Severe headaches as a side effect of blood transfusion in patients with thalassemia are not commonly observed, especially when combined with superficial siderosis of the central nervous system, which is easily misdiagnosed and requires excessive examination and treatment.
