Immunocompromised patients are at high risk of secondary infection associated with high morbidity. In children these complications include fungal osteomyelitis due to continuous infiltration or hematogenous spread. The case of a 4-year-old boy is presented who developed lumbalgia and thigh pain during ongoing chemotherapy for acute lymphatic leukemia. MRI revealed infarct-like lesions in the femur and L5 vertebra, which were biopsied. The histologic diagnosis was consistent with angioinvasive aspergillosis...

We report on a colon perforation with peritonitis which remained clinically undetected until the 4th day post trauma although the patient suffered from lumbalgia-like symptoms. He then developed an acute abdomen with sudden onset, being caused by a sigmoidal rupture and a consecutive diffuse peritonitis. A colon resection was performed according to the Hartmann procedure. Almost 36 revisions were necessary due to necrosis and perforation. Having treated the peritonitis successfully it was possible to close the abdomen and to remove the stomata...

Low back pain is the most expensive condition in industrialized countries. Approximately 65-80% of the population will be afflicted with low back pain at some point during their life. Low back pain has many causes and can originate from any of several pain-sensitive foci, among which are facet joints, sacroiliac joint, muscle and ligaments. Primary care in the acute phase consists of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to address the biochemical and inflammatory mediators of pain or skeletal muscle spasmolytics to reduce low back pain symptoms...

Cefodizime (CAS 69739-16-8, HR 221) is a new third-generation cephalosporin with pharmacokinetic properties that make it suitable for once-daily administration in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Ninety-nine adult hospitalized patients (66 males, 33 females, median age 57.5 years) received a once-daily injection of 2 g cefodizime for LRTI. Median treatment duration was 8 days. Indications for treatment were as follows; primary lobar pneumonia (n = 36), bronchopneumonia (n = 14), secondary pneumonia (n = 3), aspiration pneumonia (n = 5), acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (n = 21), and of bronchiectasis (n = 9) and acute purulent bronchitis (n = 11)...

BACKGROUND: Self-care of health problems including self-medication, constitutes the most frequent response to the most common acute symptoms in several studies carried out in other countries. Indeed there are few data concerning the scope of self-care in Spain. METHODS: A telephone survey was carried out by a questionnaire of response limited to a sample of 660 homes in the city of Barcelona. In each home response was required by only one person between the ages of 15 and 80 on the common symptoms experienced within the previous 30 days and their behavior in response to the same...
