The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of negative pressure therapy (NPT) in the treatment of complex wounds, with emphasis on its mechanisms of action and main therapeutic indications. We searched the Pubmed / Medline database for articles published from 1997 to 2016, and selected the most relevant ones. The mechanisms of action of NPT involveboth physical effects, such as increased perfusion, control of edema and exudate, reduction of wound dimensions and bacterial clearance, and biological ones, such as the stimulation of granulation tissue formation, microdeformations and reduction of Inflammatory response...

OBJECTIVE: Characterizing readmissions from orthopedic surgical site infections. METHOD: An integrative review of literature in the LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE, Cochrane, SciELO and PUBMED databases, using the descriptors Patient readmission, Wound infection, Cross infection, Orthopedic procedures, Orthopedics. RESULTS: 78 studies were identified and 10 publications were selected. Surgical site infections are the most common cause of unplanned orthopedic readmissions, representing long periods of hospitalization, new surgical procedures and high costs, and greater possibility of subsequent hospitalizations...

Cancer patients in developing and low-income countries have limited access to target therapies. For example, tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy for chronic myeloid leukaemia patients (CML) is often delayed. In Bosnia, 16% of patients received immediate TKI treatment (<3 months of diagnosis), while 66% of patients received therapy after a median 14-month wait period. To assess the effect of delayed treatment on outcome, three patient groups were studied according to the time they received TKI treatment (0-5 months, 6-12 months and >13 months delay)...

The purpose of this study was to determine how increased inaccessibility of health care during the war reflected on maternal outcomes in Tuzla Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina. We retrospectively collected data from the databases of University Department for Gynecology and Obstetrics and Department of Patology. During war years (1992-1995), the rate of maternal mortality was 87/100,000 births, in the prewar (1986-1991) was 49/100,000 births, in the postwar (1996-2000) was 50/100,000 births, and in the 2001-2005 period was 23/100,000 births...

To investigate the role of particle size on the oxidation, bioavailability, and adverse effects of manufactured Cu nanoparticles (NPs) in soils, we exposed the earthworm Eisenia ferida to a series of concentrations of commercially produced NPs labeled as 20- to 40-nm or < 100-nm Cu in artificial soil media. Effects on growth, mortality, reproduction, and expression of a variety of genes associated with metal homeostasis, general stress, and oxidative stress were measured. We also used X-ray absorption spectroscopy and scanning X-ray fluorescence microscopy to characterize changes in chemical speciation and spatial distribution of the NPs in soil media and earthworm tissues...

UNLABELLED: Laparoscopic evaluation of sentinel nodes is useful for staging prostate cancer, but preoperative localization of deep abdominal sentinel nodes with planar lymphoscintigraphy is difficult. We evaluated the value of SPECT/CT for detecting and localizing sentinel nodes in prostate cancer. METHODS: (99m)Tc-nanocolloid was injected peri- and intratumorally, guided by transrectal ultrasonography, in 46 patients with prostate cancer of intermediate prognosis...

The reaction between [Mo(NO)(Tp)I(2)] [Tp(-) = hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate] and tetrahexylcalix[4]resorcinarene (resH(8)) affords a mixture of metalated macrocycles from which [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(2)(resH(4))], [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(3)(resH(2))], and [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(4)(res)] can be isolated. In the solid state the tetrametalated compound can act as a host for CH(2)Cl(2) which forms a weak hydrogen bond to the oxygen of a coordinated nitric oxide: H.O1 2.47 Å, angle C-H.O1 161 degrees. Direct reaction of [Mo(NO)(Tp)I(2)] [Tp(-) = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate] with resorcinol itself offers a route to the related resorcinol-based tetrametallomacrocycle [Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,3-O(2)C(6)H(4))](4)...

The reaction between [Mo(NO)(Tp)I(2)] {Tp(-) = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate} and 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene affords, as its major product, the binuclear complex [Mo(NO)(Tp)(2,7-O(2)C(10)H(6))](2). The reaction appears to proceed under kinetic control so that shorter reaction times afford the syn-isomer (47% yield after 40 min) while longer reaction times allow the anti-isomer (43% yield after 48 h) to be obtained. The molecular structures of anti-[Mo(NO){HB(3,5-Me(2)C(3)HN(2))(3)}(2,7-O(2)C(10)H(6))](2)...

A list of fifty-two plant species used for medicinal purposes or to control arthropods by peasants near Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (Brazil) has been compiled. Preparation procedures are also noted. The use of plants for controlling insects and to heal a condition known as "ferida brava" is discussed. The role of indigenous plant remedies within the local health care system is worthy of a closer investigation.
