The crucial role of chemosensor for the immediate recognition of environment pollutant motivates the researchers to develop variety of sensing protocols. Of various chemosensory protocols, the colour change observed by the naked eye is considered to be a conceivable and on-site way to indicate the presence of an analyte. We herein report a colourimetric and commercially available absorption probe, sinapic acid (SA) that is completely ready to use for "on-site" visual determination of copper ions. The molecule, SA is well-known phenolic acid, often utilized for its antibacterial activity...

Most animals undergo homeostatic tissue maintenance, yet those capable of robust regeneration in adulthood use mechanisms significantly overlapping with homeostasis. Here we show in planarians that modulations to body-wide patterning systems shift the target site for eye regeneration while still enabling homeostasis of eyes outside this region. The uncoupling of homeostasis and regeneration, which can occur during normal positional rescaling after axis truncation, is not due to altered injury signaling or stem cell activity, nor specific to eye tissue...

OBJECTIVE: Radiation exposure of the lens during neck CT may increase a patient's risk of developing cataracts. Radiologists at the National Institutes of Health worked with technicians to modify the neck CT scanning procedure to include a reduction in the scanning range, a reduction in the tube potential (kilovoltage), and a change in neck positioning using a head tilt. We objectively quantified the organ dose changes after this procedure modification using a computer simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed CT images of 40 patients (20 men and 20 women) scanned before and after the procedure change...

Understanding the long-term effects of concussive events remains a challenge for the development of modern medical practices and the prevention of recurrent traumas. In this study, we utilized indices of oculomotor performance and the ability to react to simple environmental stimuli to assess the long-term motor effects of traumatic brain injury in its mildest form (mTBI). We performed analysis of eye movement accuracy, investigated the presence of abnormal eye movements, and quantified time to react to simple environmental stimuli on long-term mTBI survivors...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: While Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) offers considerable benefits to patients, it also imposes big challenges on a surgeon's performance due to well-known issues and restrictions associated with the field of view (FOV), hand-eye misalignment and disorientation, as well as the lack of stereoscopic depth perception in monocular endoscopy. Augmented Reality (AR) technology can help to overcome these limitations by augmenting the real scene with annotations, labels, tumour measurements or even a 3D reconstruction of anatomy structures at the target surgical locations...

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a chronic progressive disease of the retinal microvasculature associated with prolonged hyperglycaemia. Proliferative DR (PDR) is a sight-threatening complication of DR and is characterised by the development of abnormal new vessels in the retina, optic nerve head or anterior segment of the eye. Argon laser photocoagulation has been the gold standard for the treatment of PDR for many years, using regimens evaluated by the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS)...

In this study, we fabricated a heat-stimulated luminous fiber (HSLF) by wet spinning. The HSLF consists of Sr₂ZnSi₂O₇: Eu2+ , Dy3+ (SZSO), Y₂O₂S: Eu3+ , Mg2+ , Ti4+ (YOS), and heat-sensitive green TF-G pigment (HSGP). SZSO and YOS serve as a source of luminescence to yield a long afterglow system. HSGP is a heat-stimulating agent which develops the link between luminescence and temperature for HSLF. The luminescence of the HSLF is dull below 30 °C, but vivid above 30 °C. The luminescence of HSLFs can be stimulated by low heat (human body temperature)...

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JX) is a benign growth of fibrohistiocytoma range that mainly affects children. The most frequent localization of the tumor is skin integument. Non-cutaneous forms of JX are found in 5-10% of cases; they are manifested as deep lesions of soft tissues, involvement of various organs (oropharynx, lungs, liver, spleen, pericardium, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, bone marrow) including the organ of vision. JX can develop in any part of the eye and its appendages. Taking into consideration how rare this pathology is, its diagnosis and treatment are complicated...

Complications and the frequency of their occurrence as the criteria of eye preservation after brachytherapy (BT) are presented in literature with inconsistencies due to the assessment being done after varied follow-up periods (1 month to 5-10 years). The evaluation of complications occurring after applying radioiodine can be found in literature. The complications after BT beta particle emitting ophthalmic applicators are seldom discussed in articles. PURPOSE: to examine the frequency of complications, the characteristics of their development after choroidal melanoma (CM) brachytherapy with ruthenium ophthalmic applicators (OA) during long-term follow-up and determine the possibility of their prevention...

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) constitutes a versatile technique for biodetection exploiting the sensitivity of plasmonic nanostructures to small changes in refractive index. The optical shift in the LSPR band caused by molecular in-teractions in the vicinity of the nanostructures are typically < 5 nm and can readily be detected using a spectrophotometer. Widespread use of LSPR based sensors require cost effective devices and would benefit from sensing schemes that enables use of very simple spectrophotometers or even naked eye detection...

We present an integrative review of research and theory on major factors involved in the early development of attentional biases to faces. Research utilizing behavioral, eye-tracking, and neuroscience measures with infant participants as well as comparative research with animal subjects are reviewed. We begin with coverage of research demonstrating the presence of an attentional bias for faces shortly after birth, such as newborn infants' visual preference for face-like over non-face stimuli. The role of experience and the process of perceptual narrowing in face processing are examined as infants begin to demonstrate enhanced behavioral and neural responsiveness to mother over stranger, female over male, own- over other-race, and native over non-native faces...

Photoreceptors in the crystalline Drosophila eye are recruited by receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)/Ras signaling, mediated by the Epidermal Growth Factor receptor (EGFR) and Sevenless receptor. Analyses of an allelic deletion series of the mir-279/996 locus, along with a panel of modified genomic rescue transgenes, show that normal Drosophila eye patterning depends on both miRNAs. Transcriptional reporter and activity sensor transgenes reveal expression and function of miR-279/996 in non-neural cells of the developing eye...
