The first total synthesis of incarnatapeptins A and B, two novel marine natural products, was accomplished from readily available (S)-1-benzyloxycarbonylhexahydropyridazine-3-carboxylic acid. This route, whose longest linear sequence was 12 steps, provided the incarnatapeptins A and B in yields of 26.5% and 19.7%, respectively, and enabled the structure and stereochemistry of both natural products to be unambiguously confirmed. Highlights of our synthesis include the photoredox-mediated decarboxylative 1,4-addition reaction and a novel and practical N-acylation paradigm promoted by silver carbonate...

AIMS: The central aim of this study was to determine whether intentional, voluntary alcoholics anonymous (AA) participation showed any independent association with affect, over and above that which has been observed in association with other recovery-related behaviors, such as abstinence, among individuals with a history of alcohol use disorder. Additionally, we sought to determine the nature of the affective changes associated with specific dimensions of AA participation (i.e. meeting  attendance, fellowship  involvement, 12-step  work)...

BACKGROUND: This study explores how Special Interest Meetings (SIMs), also called topic-specific meetings (e.g., meetings for young people), support recovery in 12-Step fellowships for Special Populations like young people, women and LGBTQIA+ members. Despite their emergence to address the needs of these groups, the specific ways Special Interest Meetings contribute to recovery experiences are understudied. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 participants who had attended Special Interest Meetings in 12-Step fellowships to explore the role of these meetings in recovery...

Spirituality is an important aspect of treatment and recovery for substance use disorders (SUDs), but ambiguities in measurement can make it difficult to incorporate as part of routine care. We evaluated the psychometric properties of an adapted short-form version of the Spirituality Scale (the Spirituality Scale-Short-Form; SS-SF) for use in SUD treatment settings. Participants were adult patients ( N = 1,388; Mage = 41.23 years, SDage = 11.55; 68% male; 86% White) who entered a large, clinically mixed inpatient SUD treatment program...

In a 2016 screen of natural product extracts, a new family of natural products, the cahuitamycins, was discovered and found to inhibit biofilm formation in the human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii . The proposed molecular structures contained an unusual piperazic acid residue, which piqued interest related to their structure/function and biosynthesis. Herein we disclose the first total synthesis of the proposed structure of cahuitamycin A in a 12-step longest linear sequence and 18% overall yield. Comparison of spectral and biological data of the authentic natural product and synthetic compound revealed inconsistentancies with the isolated metabolite...

Sexual and gender minority individuals ( e.g., gay, bisexual, non-binary, transgender; SGMI) are 2-6 times as likely as cisgender heterosexual individuals to experience alcohol or other substance use disorders. SGMI participate in 12-Step groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), at high rates. Though social support is an established mechanism through which 12-Step programs support reductions in substance use, little is known about SGMI's experiences of the social support in 12-Step programs. This qualitative study aims to understand the experiences of social and community support among SGMI involved in 12-Step programs...

The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of sobriety date as recovery start date, from the perspective of those in recovery, using a mixed methods approach. We report findings from 389 individuals who identify as being in recovery from a substance and/or alcohol use disorder concerning how they define their recovery start date. We report findings from logistic regression examining how the use of a sobriety date as a recovery start date differs across age, 12-step group engagement, and previous relapse occurrence...

It remains challenging for patients with stroke to regain the proper gait they had before stroke onset. In this study, one of the significant reasons for the problem is assumed to be the collapse of patients' internal model. Therefore, this study aimed to propose a method for lower-limb rehabilitation in the acute phase to prevent the collapse of the internal model and simultaneously promote voluntariness. To verify the effect of the proposed method and determine the optimal FB conditions, a supine pseudo-walking system has been developed providing multimodal sensory FBs, including somatosensory FB (walking on the walking robot), load transfer FB (plantar vibration provided by the robot), and visual FB (walking scene shown in virtual reality)...

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B (HB) and hepatitis C (HC) place the largest burden in China, and a goal of eliminating them as a major public health threat by 2030 has been set. Making more informed and accurate forecasts of their spread is essential for developing effective strategies, heightening the requirement for early warning to deal with such a major public health threat. AIM: To monitor HB and HC epidemics by the design of a paradigmatic seasonal autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (SARFIMA) for projections into 2030, and to compare the effectiveness with the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA)...

INTRO: Substance use and associated problems often return following treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), which disproportionally impact Black/African American (AA) individuals. Social support and spiritual well-being are sources of recovery capital identified as particularly important among Black/AA adults. Social support and spiritual well-being are also posited mechanisms in 12-step; thus, this study tested the effects of social support and spiritual well-being on substance use outcomes over time, distinct from 12-step involvement, among Black/AA adults post-SUD treatment...

BACKGROUND: The current emphasis among addiction treatment providers is to use person-first language, such as "a person with a substance use disorder," as a way to reduce stigma around addiction and resulting barriers to treatment. This study considers how individuals recovering from substance use feel about the terms "alcoholic" and "addict," particularly how they self-identify and whether they believe the terms carry stigma. METHOD: Thirty-five individuals were interviewed, recruited primarily, but not exclusively, from 12-step meetings (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous), from 3 locations throughout a rural New England state...

Chemotherapies and biologic agents are known to cause hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). It is imperative that pediatric patients receive these agents to treat their cancer or other rare condition, as oftentimes there are no available therapeutic alternatives. Successful medication desensitization has been described previously with a 12-step method using 3 intravenous (IV) infusion bags of varying concentrations. However, this 12-step process is time and resource intensive and increases the risk for medication errors...

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a new step-count algorithm, StepMatchDTWBA, for the accurate measurement of physical activity using wearable devices in both healthy and pathological populations. We conducted a study with 30 healthy volunteers wearing a wrist-worn MOX accelerometer (Maastricht Instruments, NL). The StepMatchDTWBA algorithm used dynamic time warping (DTW) barycentre averaging to create personalised templates for representative steps, accounting for individual walking variations. DTW was then used to measure the similarity between the template and accelerometer epoch...

The current study examined the frequency of giving and receiving help among 188 persons entering sober living houses (SLHs), a type of recovery home that is common in California. Helping was assessed in three contexts: the SLH, 12-step meetings they attended, and interactions with their family and friends...
