PURPOSE: Assessing the complex three-dimensional (3D) structure of the cochlea is crucial to understanding the fundamental aspects of signal transduction in the inner ear and is a prerequisite for the development of novel cochlear implants. X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography offers destruction-free 3D imaging with little sample preparation, thus preserving the delicate structure of the cochlea. The use of heavy metal stains enables higher contrast and resolution and facilitates segmentation of the cochlea...

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an uncommon pathology with uncertain etiology. There is no consensus on their management. The current systematic review aimed to discuss the clinical and histopathological features of ganglion cysts of TMJ, to aid in appropriate treatment. A literature search was done and a total of 20 cases were retrieved from published databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The cyst presented with swelling in all the cases followed by pain (50 %) and trismus (35 %) as other common symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cysts are the most common soft tissue mass in the hand and wrist in both adults and children. More is known about wrist ganglia and their treatment outcomes in adults than in children. Current literature to guide the management of pediatric wrist ganglia is limited. The purpose of this study is to report on the rates of recurrence of pediatric wrist ganglia after active intervention-aspiration or surgical excision-at a single center, as well as to explore factors associated with recurrence in one of the largest samples to date of pediatric wrist ganglia...

In adaptation to surrounding environmental stimuli, most insects exhibit defense behaviour (death feigning) to improve survival rates in the wild. However, the underlying mechanism of death feigning remains largely unknown. Here, we test the neurophysiological pattern and behavioural traits of death-feigning mechanism in the forestry pest, Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus. Using neuroanatomy, LC-MS/MS target metabolomics detection technology and qRT-PCR, we investigated the effects of neurochemicals and metabolic pathways in experimental weevils...

Planarians represent the most primitive bilateral triploblastic animals. Most planarian species exhibit mechanisms for whole-body regeneration, exemplified by the regeneration of their cephalic ganglion after complete excision. Given their robust whole-body regeneration capacity, planarians have been model organisms in regenerative research for more than 240 years. Advancements in research tools and techniques have progressively elucidated the mechanisms underlying planarian regeneration. Accurate cell-cell communication is recognized as a fundamental requirement for regeneration...

Wrist arthroscopy could be a treatment option for dorsal ganglion cysts. To achieve a thorough dorsal capsulectomy for the removal of midcarpal ganglion cysts, it is commonly necessary to combine both the radiocarpal and midcarpal portals. We present a modified method using radiocarpal portals only for arthroscopically excising dorsal midcarpal ganglion cysts. No extra midcarpal portals are necessary, and the method potentially generates satisfactory results.

Ganglioneuroma is a benign, slow-growing neurogenic tumor arising from neural crest cells. It is extremely rare (1/1,000,000) and is located most commonly in the posterior mediastinum (41.5%), retroperitoneum (37.5%), and adrenal glands (21%). We present a case of a 62-year-old lady who had complaints of shortness of breath on exertion and dyspnea for the past 3 months. She had no other significant history. Computerised tomography (CT) scan of the thorax suggested left-sided loculated subpulmonic pleural effusion, 14 × 12 cm in dimension...

BACKGROUND: Acromioclavicular joint ganglion cysts are rare lesions that mainly arise from the degeneration of the acromioclavicular joint in elderly patients. Although surgical management may be required because of their high recurrence rate after aspiration, few reports have described arthroscopic surgical procedures to treat acromioclavicular ganglion cysts. We report the surgical results of arthroscopic ganglionectomy with color-aided visualization for massive acromioclavicular ganglion joint cysts...

Background  Synovial cysts (SCs) are the most frequent wrist tumors; the arthroscopic treatment presents good results when surgery is indicated for symptomatic or patients with cosmetic concerns. The tumoral lesion should be arthroscopically decompressed or drained toward the inside of the joint through pedicle opening and resection of a small portion of the capsule. Hence, the cyst pedicle must be found for the success of this technique. Description of Technique  Some tricks have already been described to facilitate SC location during arthroscopy...

INTRODUCTION: Ganglion cysts are the knee's most common benign soft tissue tumors. Ganglion cysts are seen as multiloculated fluid collections on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluid-fluid levels are not an expected finding. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female patient presented with swelling in her right knee. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a multiseptated cyst with multiple fluid-fluid levels within the anterior of the right patellar tendon. Open surgical excision was performed, and the pedicle of the cyst was dissected...

BACKGROUND: Toe ganglion cysts are often symptomatic and recurrent. Communicating lesions between ganglion cysts and the interphalangeal joint (IPJ) or tendon sheath make it difficult to prevent a recurrence. Temporary restriction of the joint and tendon motion can facilitate surgical site healing. This study analyzed the clinical results of temporary pin fixation of the IPJ after toe ganglion cyst excision. METHODS: Sixteen patients with symptomatic toe ganglion cysts underwent surgical treatment...

Intracranial melanotic schwannoma is quite rare, and involvement of the trigeminal nerve is even rarer. Early diagnosis and surgical excision are the mainstays of management. These tumors have a high tendency to recur and there is high possibility of metastasis. Adjuvant radiotherapy should be considered since the prognosis is uncertain. A 23-year-old man started developing numbness over the left side of the forehead 9 months ago that progressed to involve the ipsilateral cheek. The patient started having diplopia on looking to the left side 8 months ago...

Suprascapular nerve dysfunction caused by ganglion cysts is a rare condition that can cause significant pain and weakness in the shoulder. The suprascapular nerve is a branch of the brachial plexus that innervates the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. It is most commonly compressed at the suprascapular notch or the spinoglenoid notch. A 40-year-old male presented with a two-year history of left shoulder pain that was aggravated by overhead activities. Physical examination revealed mild tenderness along the infraspinatus with noticeable atrophy, full range of motion, and mild external rotation weakness...

TRPC channels are critical players in cochlear hair cells and sensory neurons, as demonstrated in animal experiments. However, evidence for TRPC expression in the human cochlea is still lacking. This reflects the logistic and practical difficulties in obtaining human cochleae. The purpose of this study was to detect TRPC6, TRPC5 and TRPC3 in the human cochlea. Temporal bone pairs were excised from ten body donors, and the inner ear was first assessed based on computed tomography scans. Decalcification was then performed using 20% EDTA solutions...

Schwannomas are benign nerve tumours arising from the Schwann cells. Approximately 25-45% of schwannomas occurs in the head and neck region. Majority of schwannomas in the head and neck region arise from the vagus nerve. Trigeminal schwannomas account for about 0.2% of all intracranial tumours. Trigeminal schwannomas can originate from any section of the fifth cranial nerve, from the root to the distal extracranial branches, but majority develops from the Gasserian ganglion, usually growing in the middle cranium...

Intraosseous ganglion cysts (IGC) of the carpal bones are frequently reported in the literature, involving at most two carpal bones of the same wrist. Only one case recently described the presence of multiple intraosseous ganglion lesions in the capitate, lunate, and triquetrum, resulting in chronic wrist pain. The following study reports the first case of multiple IGCs causing a unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), in a 56-year-old woman, with no previous history of trauma. Failure of conservative management prompted carpal tunnel release and the surgical excision of the ICGs, followed by autologous bone grafting to fill in the defects...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) surgeries manage neuroma pain; however, there remains considerable discord regarding the best treatment strategy. We provide a direct comparison of TMR and RPNI surgery using a rodent model for the treatment of neuroma pain. METHODS: The tibial nerve of 36 Fischer rats was transected and secured to the dermis to promote neuroma formation. Pain was assessed using mechanical stimulation at the neuroma site (direct pain) and von Frey analysis at the footpad (to assess tactile allodynia from collateral innervation)...
