Vertical transmission of Renibacterium salmoninarum has been well-documented in anadromous salmonids but not in hatchery-reared inland trout. We assessed whether the bacterium is vertically transmitted in cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) from a Colorado, USA hatchery, and assessed the rate of transmission from male and female brood fish. Adult brood fish were killed, tested for R. salmoninarum in kidney, liver, spleen, ovarian fluid, blood and mucus samples, then stripped of gametes to create 32 families with four infection treatments (MNFN, MNFP, MPFN, MPFP; M: male, F: female, P: positive, N: negative)...

Ovarian lavage is a term used to describe the injection of fish with a catheter through the oviduct into the ovary. In this study, the efficacy of this technique was evaluated as a route for hormone administration and sperm preservation in the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Firstly, the effects of hormone injection routes (namely, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and ovarian lavage) were evaluated on breeding and haematological parameters. In the second study, the fish's spermatozoa were stored in the ovaries for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days before stripping, sperm activation with freshwater, and fertilization...

Background and Objectives: To achieve pregnancy, it is highly beneficial to identify the time of ovulation as well as the greater period of fertile days during which sperm may survive leading up to ovulation. Confirming successful ovulation is also critical to accurately diagnose ovulatory disorders. Ovulation predictor kits, fertility monitors, and tracking apps are all available to assist with detecting ovulation, but often fall short. They may not detect the full fertile window, provide accurate or real-time information, or are simply expensive and impractical...

The activation, growth, development, and maturation of oocytes is a complex process that is coordinated not just between multiple cell types of the ovary but also across multiple points of control within the hypothalamic/pituitary/ovarian circuit. Within the ovary, multiple specialized cell types grow in close association with the oocyte within the ovarian follicles. The biology of these cells has been well described at the later stages, when they are easily recovered as byproducts of assisted reproductive treatments...

Cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer commonly involves bowel resection. Although UK gynaecological oncologists are trained in bowel surgery, the degree to which they perform bowel surgery independently varies nationally. A recent joint policy statement from the British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS) emphasises the need for formalised colorectal support. An anonymous, online survey was emailed to BGCS members to assess the status of multidisciplinary working between UK gynaecological oncology and colorectal/general surgical teams...

We report successful clinical outcomes after transplantation of refrozen-rethawed cortical strips from a cryopreserved whole ovary in a patient diagnosed with stage IIIb rectal adenocarcinoma. Whole ovary cryopreservation was proposed as a fertility preservation strategy in 2006 prior to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and oncological surgery. To allow for minimal residual disease screening before ovarian reimplantation, the whole ovary was thawed and dissected into cortical strips. While awaiting the results, the majority of the cortical strips were refrozen...

Struma ovarii is a type of mature ovarian teratoma which accounts for roughly 0.5%-1% (1) of all ovarian tumours and approximately 3% of all ovarian teratomas (2). To be classified as struma ovarii, more than 50% of the tumour must be comprised of thyroid tissue (3). Malignant struma ovarii being rare, no proper guidelines exists regarding its surgical approach or postoperative management. Metastatic malignant struma ovarii, in addition to radical surgery for ovarian mass will require total thyroidectomy to facilitate high dose radioiodine therapy...

A preservation protocol has not been established for Colossoma macropomum oocytes, and its development may improve the production and breeding programs of this South American fish species. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effect of different methods and protocols for the preservation of C. macropomum oocytes. Seven experiments were conducted throughout the breeding season of this species. The oocytes were collected and stored in sterile conditions. Preserved oocytes were subjected to storage in the following treatments: room temperature (RT, 27 °C), centrifugation followed by ovarian fluid removal (Cen), vacuum (Vac), chilled temperature (ChT), centrifugation and vacuum (CV), vacuum and chilled temperature (VChT), and centrifugation, vacuum, and chilled temperature (CVChT) in dry sterilized plastic containers and plastic bags...

Background: Sex cord-stromal tumors (SCSTs) are uncommon neoplasms that are typically difficult to diagnose before surgery due to limited experience in their medical imaging. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) can evaluate the microvessel density of tumors, and the microvessel density of malignant tumors is significantly greater than that of benign tumors, so this provides a method for CEUS to differentiate benign and malignant tumors. Methods: The CEUS diagnoses of 31 patients with pathologically confirmed SCSTs were retrospectively analyzed and compared to conventional ultrasound-based diagnoses...

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is the only pre-treatment option currently available to preserve fertility for prepubescent girls and patients who cannot undergo ovarian stimulation. Currently, there is no standardized method of processing ovarian tissue for cryopreservation, despite evidence that fragmentation of ovaries may trigger primordial follicle activation. Because fragmentation may influence ovarian transplant function, the purpose of this systematic review was (1) to identify the processing sizes and dimensions of ovarian tissue within sites around the world, and (2) to examine the reported outcomes of ovarian tissue transplantation including, reported duration of hormone restoration, pregnancy, and live birth...

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising agents for liquid biopsy-a non-invasive approach for the diagnosis of cancer and evaluation of therapy response. However, EV potential is limited by the lack of sufficiently sensitive, time-, and cost-efficient methods for their registration. This research aimed at developing a highly sensitive and easy-to-use immunochromatographic tool based on magnetic nanoparticles for EV quantification. The tool is demonstrated by detection of EVs isolated from cell culture supernatants and various body fluids using characteristic biomarkers, CD9 and CD81, and a tumor-associated marker-epithelial cell adhesion molecules...
