Global climate warming could affect the methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) fluxes between soils and the atmosphere, but how CH4 and N2 O fluxes respond to whole-soil warming is unclear. Here, we for the first time investigated the effects of whole-soil warming on CH4 and N2 O fluxes in an alpine grassland ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau, and also studied the effects of experimental warming on CH4 and N2 O fluxes across terrestrial ecosystems through a global-scale meta-analysis. The whole-soil warming (0-100 cm, +4°C) significantly elevated soil N2 O emission by 101%, but had a minor effect on soil CH4 uptake...

The draining and fertilization of peatlands for agriculture is globally an important source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2 O). Hitherto, the contribution of major sources to the N2 O emission-that is, fertilization and nitrogen (N) release from peat decomposition-has not yet been deciphered. This hampers the development of smart mitigation strategies, considering that rewetting to halt peat decomposition and reducing N fertilization are promising N2 O emission-reduction strategies. Here, we used machine learning techniques and global N2 O observational data to generalize the distribution of N2 O emissions from agriculturally managed peatlands, to distinguish the sources of N2 O emissions, and to compare mitigation options...

Continuous flow processes for the in situ determination of N2 O emissions during low C/N municipal wastewater treatment have rarely been reported. The anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process has recently shown promising potential in energy savings and advanced nitrogen removal, but it still needs to be comprehensively explored in relation to N2 O emissions for its carbon reduction advantages. In this study, a novel gas-collecting continuous flow reactor was designed to comprehensively evaluate the emissions of N2 O from the gas and liquid phases of the AOA process...

Improving the selectivity in the oxidative coupling of methane to ethane/ethylene poses a significant challenge for commercialization. The required improvements are hampered by the uncertainties associated with the reaction mechanism due to its complexity. Herein, we report about 90% selectivity to the target products at 11% methane conversion over Gd2O3-based catalysts at 700°C using N2O as the oxidant. Sophisticated kinetic studies have suggested the nature of adsorbed oxygen species and their binding strength as key parameters for undesired methane oxidation to carbon oxides...

Bulk carbon-based materials can enhance anaerobic biodenitrification when they are present in extracellular matrices. However, little information is available on the effect of nitrogen and iron co-doped carbon dots (N, Fe-CDs) with sizes below 10 nm on this process. This work demonstrated that Fe-NX formed in N, Fe-CDs and their low surface potentials facilitated electron transfer. N, Fe-CDs exhibited good biocompatibility and were effectively absorbed by Pseudomonas stutzeri ATCC 17588. Intracellular N, Fe-CDs played a dominant role in enhancing anaerobic denitrification...

Nitrous oxide (N2 O) has a detrimental impact on the greenhouse effect, and its efficient catalytic decomposition at low temperatures remains challenging. Herein, the cobalt-based high-entropy oxide with a spinel-type structure (Co-HEO) is successfully fabricated via a facile coprecipitation method for N2 O catalytic decomposition. The obtained Co-HEO catalyst displays more remarkable catalytic performance and higher thermal stability compared with single and binary Co-based oxides, as the temperature of 90% N2 O decomposition ( T 90 ) is 356 °C...

PdCe-350 exhibits a higher density of Ov and Pd sites with higher CN, leading to an enhanced metal-support interaction by electron transformation from the support to Pd...

Subacute combined degeneration (SCD) of the spinal cord is a disease involving the lateral and posterior columns of the spinal cord that can manifest in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency. Nitrous oxide (N2O)-induced SCD of the spinal cord is a result of N2O interfering with the metabolism of vitamin B12 and results in nervous system demyelination. This is an infrequent complication of N2O anesthesia; however, cases are rising with recreational N2O use. This case report describes a patient with SCD of the spinal cord induced by recreational N2O abuse...

With the introduction of increasingly strict emission regulations, reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and nitrous oxide (N2O) production from diesel engines have become the focus of research. At high temperature, the reaction of NO2 in the catalyst generates the intermediate product NH4NO3, which first crystallizes below 300°C. These crystals tend to block the pores and inhibit the reaction. Subsequently, N2O is produced through the decomposition of NH4NO3, leading to additional pollution. Therefore, the concentration of NO2 has a direct impact on both the NOx conversion efficiency and the generation of N2O, requiring consideration of the optimal proportion of NO2 in SCR...

N2 O is a common byproduct in the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia, and its generation often needs to be inhibited due to its strong greenhouse effect. In this paper, using Ag/ZSO-Y as a model catalyst, the N2 O selectivity was reduced by 30% through modulation of the electron metal-support interaction. The results demonstrate that the work function of the support can be regulated by the content of the doping element. As the Zr content increases in SnO2 , the work function of the support decreases. Moreover, there is a positive correlation between the charge transfer amount and the work function of the support...

Urban wastewater, as the main influent type of Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs), has the characteristic of low carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N). In the biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process, insufficient carbon source often affects the nitrogen removal efficiency and leads to more N2 O emissions. We review recent researches on N2 O emissions in the BNR process of wastewater with low C/N. The availability of carbon sources affects heterotrophic denitrification (HD) and autotrophic nitrification/denitrification processes, which are the main reasons for N2 O emissions in BNR...
