Together with lamellipodia and stress fibers, a dynamic network of actin filaments in the cell cortex plays a major role in the maintenance of cell morphology and motility. In contrast to lamellipodia, which have been well studied in various motile cells, the dynamics of actin filaments in the cell cortex have not yet been clarified due to a lack of proper imaging techniques. Here, we utilized high-speed atomic force microscopy for live-cell imaging and analyzed cortical actin dynamics in living cells. We successfully measured the polymerization rate and the frequency of filament synthesis in living COS-7 cells, and examined the associated effects of various inhibitors and actin-binding proteins...

Orbital exenteration is a disfiguring procedure performed for unresponsive orbital infections and control of recurrent benign tumours and malignancies arising from the eyelids (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, conjunctival malignant melanoma), lachrymal glands (adenoid cystic carcinoma) or surrounding sinuses. In extremely rare cases the use of a prosthetic eye after enucleation can lead to anophthalmic socket tumours. We report the case of a 54-year-old man who had left eye enucleation due to recurring events of retinal detachment and who developed an invasive fast growing epidermoid carcinoma 30 years later...

Kubo's fluctuation theory of line shape forms the backbone of our understanding of optical and vibrational line shapes, through such concepts as static heterogeneity and motional narrowing. However, the theory does not properly address the effects of quantum coherences on optical line shape, especially in extended systems where a large number of eigenstates are present. In this work, we study the line shape of an exciton in a one-dimensional lattice consisting of regularly placed and equally separated optical two level systems...

Intake of water contaminated with lead (Pb(2+)) and mercury (Hg(2+)) ions leads to various toxic effects and health issues. In this context, an amperometric urease inhibition-based biosensor was developed to detect Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) ions in water matrix. The modified Pt/CeO2/urease electrode was fabricated by immobilizing CeO2 nanoparticles and urease using a semi-permeable adsorption layer of nafion. With urea as a substrate, urease catalytic activity was examined through cyclic voltammetry. Further, maximum amperometric inhibitive response of the modified Pt/CeO2/urease electrode was observed in the presence of Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) ions due to the urease inhibition at specific potentials of -0...

We present the case of an adult patient with active post-primary pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and discuss specific morphological and textural aspects found at high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lung. The 42-year-old man, heavy smoker, undertook a routine employment medical examination and was admitted to a referral pulmonology and TB center due to the abnormal findings seen on his chest radiography. The patient presented nonspecific symptoms, bilateral bronchial breath at pulmonary auscultation, inflammatory syndrome on the laboratory blood tests and positive sputum smears for acid-fast bacilli, which together with the typical aspect on the chest radiography lead to a diagnosis of post-primary pulmonary TB and administration of specific medication...

Metformin is used clinically to reduce fasting glucose with minimal effects on postprandial glucose. Postmeal exercise reduces postprandial glucose and may offer additional glucose-lowering benefit beyond that of metformin alone, yet controversy exists surrounding exercise and metformin interactions. It is currently unknown how postmeal exercise and metformin monotherapy in combination will affect postprandial glucose. Thus, we examined the independent and combined effects of postmeal exercise and metformin monotherapy on postprandial glucose...

Bisphenol A (BPA), the monomeric component of polycarbonate plastics, reportedly possesses endocrine-disrupting effects. Exposure to low levels of BPA during more vulnerable periods leads to abnormalities related to sexual development in experimental animals. Moreover, recently a few epidemiological studies in Caucasians have demonstrated the association of BPA exposure with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, in the present study we examined the association of BPA exposure and abnormal glucose tolerance in Thais. This is a cross-sectional study of 240 participants aged at least 50 years, randomly selected by computer-generated random numbers within each glucose tolerance status from an oral glucose tolerance study of 661 participants...
