Body mecanics

Patrice Pinet
Men were very early fascinated by magnetism because of its manifest and particular working at distance, which looked different of gravity. It was tryed to be explained by mecanism, for exemple Descartes and Boyle. Paracelse valued the therapeutics with magnets and conceived medicines as working by a magnetic virtue. Gilbert limited the medicinal properties of magnet but helded it to be animated. Many authors praised remedies that work at distance of the evil as Bacon, Van Helmont, Croll, Porta, Goclenius, Digby...

BACKGROUND: Occupational injury represents 7,7 at 69,9% of the total ocular traumatisms. They can be a major source of visuel loss and blindness. The aim is to study the epidemiology of work-related ocular injuries: objects frequencies, works most exposed. METHODS: We performed a prospective study that interest 78 patients having a work-related ocular traumatism during a 4 months period. They were admitted at ocular emergeney All patients underwent an ophtalmologic examination completed with orbital radiography and echography...

A whole body scan is performed after a radioiodine treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. This scan is useful coupled with thyroglobulin level for the patient's management. When unusual uptake is found, investigations have to be done to eliminate thyroid metastasis. A 28-year old woman underwent a total thyroidectomy for micro papillary carcinoma. Two years and a half after, ultrasonography of the neck showed a small lymph node in homolateral side of carcinoma. It was decided to begin treatment with iodine 131...

In a previous article from a cross-sectional study of 737 men and 771 women (40-42 years old) in Norway, we found a higher mean serum uric acid in persons with than without chronic musculoskeletal complaints. Furthermore, the odds ratio for chronic complaints increased by increasing uric acid level. Persons with chronic complaints are heterogenous. The scope of the present study was to inquire whether a further breakdown of the material would shed more light upon our previous findings, and thereby contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of chronic complaints...

The mecanisms of resistance to starvation of adult Ceratitis capitata are analysed. This study is based on comparison of two laboratory strains: one which was previously selected for "resistance to starvation" the other which has never been selected. Resistance to starvation appears to be determined, on the one hand by reserves in the insect and their hourly rate of utilisation on the other hand by the efficiency of the antidiuretic system. The selection, which increased adult resistance to starvation acted upon these three factors...

The ideal treatment of urinary incontinence in children must refer to the subsequent subjects: reestablishment of urinary control, long term conservation of renal function and finally the preservation of normal body image. In this follow up 39 children from 4-20 years have been treated by implantation of an artificial sphincter. From 1983 the recent model AS 800 has been implanted. Because of bladder hyperreflexia and functional or mecanical obstruction 31 further operations had to be done to assure the balanced emptying of a low pressure reservoir with good capacity...

Ingestion of food and water is the most important mean by which an animal maintains the integrity of the "milieu interne". In a free feeding situation the animal selects the nutrients demanded by the monitors of the internal fluid environment and avoids the malaise caused by ingested toxins; to doing, it maintains the constancy of its body composition. The essential features of this qualitative regulation have been extensively studied in the animal: the choice of nutrient is based on the sensory activity of the ingested material at the oropharynegeal level; some preferences and aversions are innate; others are acquired by conditioning; conditioned taste aversions can be acquired after a single association between the conditioned stimulus (taste) and the unconditioned one (malaise); some preferences and aversions are acquired slowly under the reenforcing effect of the nutritional activity of the ingested food...
