The cochlear implant is an implanted auditory prosthesis that can restore severe and profound hearing loss. About 20% of patients with congenital sensorineural hearing loss have a malformation of the inner ear. These abnormalities must be investigated before a cochlear implant because they can lead to intra and postoperative complications and/or anomalies. Most labyrinthine malformations are well known; some are less frequent and can be underdiagnosed at the preoperative computed tomography. This report presents the case of bilateral cochlear-facial dehiscence, bony dehiscence between the facial nerve labyrinthine segment, and cochlear basal turn...

Maxillectomy defects can lead to oroantral communication, causing difficulties with chewing, swallowing, speech, and facial appearance. Prosthodontists play a crucial role in rehabilitating such defects using obturators. This case report presents the fabrication of a definitive obturator with a cast metal framework for a patient who had an acquired maxillary defect and previously experienced issues with an ill-fitting obturator. In this clinical report, the patient's canine teeth on both sides and the premolars and molars on the left side were used for rest placement...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to predict the positional coordinates of incisor points from the scan data of conventional complete dentures and verify their accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The standard triangulated language (STL) data of the scanned 100 pairs of complete upper and lower dentures were imported into the computer-aided design software from which the position coordinates of the points corresponding to each landmark of the jaw were obtained. The x, y, and z coordinates of the incisor point (XP , YP , and ZP ) were obtained from the maxillary and mandibular landmark coordinates using regression or calculation formulas, and the accuracy was verified to determine the deviation between the measured and predicted coordinate values...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Reasons associated with the failure of facial prosthesis are of major concern and may be associated with deterioration of both elastomeric materials and magnetic attachments. However, the extent of deterioration of these components is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate selected retrieved facial prostheses and provide information regarding the electrochemical characterization of the recovered magnetic attachments...

As innovations in the field of vascular composite allotransplantation (VCA) progress, whole-eye transplantation (WET) is poised to transition from non-human mammalian models to living human recipients. Present treatment options for vision loss are generally considered suboptimal, and attendant concerns ranging from aesthetics and prosthesis maintenance to social stigma may be mitigated by WET. Potential benefits to WET recipients may also include partial vision restoration, psychosocial benefits related to identity and social integration, improvements in physical comfort and function, and reduced surgical risk associated with a biologic eye compared to a prosthesis...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Color matching and marginal integrity are major challenges when providing extraoral maxillofacial prostheses. Which of the color and marginal harmony features are more important for the extraoral prostheses to be inconspicuous is unclear. Studies on the perception of these prostheses with objective evaluation criteria are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the significance of color mismatch and conspicuous marginal adaptation in the perception of extraoral maxillofacial prostheses using eye-tracking technology...

Introduction: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a secondary complication from radiotherapy, which is difficult to manage and significantly reduces the life quality of the affected patients. Case Report: A 59-year-old female patient, diagnosed with infiltration by squamous cell carcinoma in the left cervical region, underwent adjuvant cervical-facial radiotherapy with a total dose of 66.6 Gy of radiation. Eight years after the diagnosis, the patient underwent multiple extractions and, subsequently, the installation of osseointegrated implants, evolving to extensive intraoral bone exposure associated with oral cutaneous fistula...

Hemifacial hyperplasia (HFH) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by marked unilateral overgrowth of the facial tissues. A subtype of HFH is congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CIL-F). This disease is characterized by unilateral diffuse infiltration of mature adipose cells in the facial soft tissue and is associated with skeletal hypertrophy. This work aims to report a case of a CIL-F patient with right facial asymmetry and progressive growth at adolescent age, causing mandibular asymmetry due to signs of concomitant unilateral condylar hyperplasia...

Unsplinted attachment systems for implant overdentures offer various benefits for edentulous patients, including cost-effectiveness, enhanced cleansability, and less need for manual dexterity. This article describes a facially driven digital workflow for fabricating a maxillary implant overdenture retained by conometric-style attachments (Atlantis® Conus) with a palateless design opposing an implant overdenture retained by standard attachments (LOCATOR®). This procedure provides a predictable and accurate technique to digitally scan the master casts with wax rims for articulation and to guide the digital teeth design set-up for a predictable esthetic outcome...

BACKGROUND: The paranasal depression is a common facial feature of Oriental populations. One of the most wildly used method to improve it was paranasal augmentation using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). The effectiveness of it should be tested by three-dimensional morphological measurements. METHODS: Patients who underwent paranasal augmentation using ePTFE between January 2017 and December 2022 were recruited in the study. The preoperative and postoperative clinical variables and three-dimensional measurement of patients were also collected...

Total joint reconstruction (TJR) has become the most preferred method of reconstruction in recent years for hemifacial microsomia (HFM). This requires meticulous planning for the glenoid fossa and ramus prosthesis along with the arch in certain indications. TJR in a type V HFM is extremely challenging due to agenesis/hypolasia of the zygoma and arch which compromises anchorage of the glenoid prosthesis. Conventional options used for such indications incorporate extended designs for the fossa. However, the two designs used commonly are associated with limitations; (i) the temporal extension is overtly large and cannot be anchored in patients with thin temporal bone and (ii) the glenoid fossa incorporated into the arch prosthesis, where the fossa is not positioned on stable bone and occlusal loading is non-physiological; transmitted onto the arch prosthesis rather than the skull base...

This case report presents a mandible reconstruction with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prothesis for treatment of osteomyelitis infection following a bimaxillary orthognathic and genioplasty surgeries. The patient, a 41-year-old female, presented with facial pain, difficulty in opening her mouth, and mandibular deviation four months after the initial orthognathic surgery. During the four months, the patient had experienced two more surgerys post-operative for treatment of the complications. Examination revealed mobility between osteotomy segments of the right mandibular osteotomomie between body and ramus, and Computer Tomographic scan analysis revealed osteomyelitis and non-union within the osteotomy side of the right mandible from the previous surgery...
