Due to the difficulty of finding brain-dead donors, in October 1998, I performed the first living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT) for a ventilator-dependent 24-year-old female patient with bronchiectasis using lobes from her parents. The patient is still alive and in good health 25 years after the transplantation. Over time, the indications for LDLLT have expanded to include pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, congenital genetic diseases, pulmonary complications after stem cell transplantation, and, more recently, severe lung injury due to COVID-19 infection...

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major global health challenge, being the fifth most prevalent neoplasm and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Liver transplantation offers a potentially curative approach for HCC, yet the risk of recurrence posttransplantation remains a significant concern. This study investigates the influence of a liver immune status index (LISI) on the prognosis of patients undergoing living-donor liver transplantation for HCC...

The title compound, C22 H12 N2 S2 , crystallizes in space group P 21 / c with four mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The heterocyclic mol-ecule is quasi-planar with a dihedral angle between the phenyl rings on the periphery of the mol-ecule of 1.73 (19)°. Short H⋯S (2.92 Å) and C-H⋯π [2.836 (3) Å] contacts are observed in the crystal with shorted π -π stacking distances of 3.438 (3) Å along the b axis. Surprisingly, and unlike a closely related material, this mol-ecule readily forms large crystals by sublimation and by slow evaporation from di-chloro-methane...

BACKGROUND: For children with severe aplastic anemia, if the first immunosuppressive therapy (IST) fails, it is not recommended to choose a second IST. Therefore, for patients without matched sibling donor (MSD) and matched unrelated donor (MUD), haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Haplo-HSCT) can be chosen as a salvage treatment. This article aims to explore the comparison between upfront Haplo-HSCT and salvage Haplo-HSCT after IST. METHODS: 29 patients received salvage Haplo-HSCT, and 50 patients received upfront Haplo-HSCT...

BACKGROUND: Blocking the CD47 "don't eat me"-signal on tumor cells with monoclonal antibodies or fusion proteins has shown limited clinical activity in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors thus far. Main side effects are associated with non-tumor targeted binding to CD47 particularly on blood cells. METHODS: We present here the generation and preclinical development of NILK-2401, a CEACAM5×CD47 bispecific antibody (BsAb) composed of a common heavy chain and two different light chains, one kappa and one lambda, determining specificity (so-called κλ body format)...

Cecal microbiota has emerged as a prominent intervention target for improving the production and welfare of poultry. This is essential for the overall health and performance of broiler chickens. The current study focused on investigating the effect of cecal microbiota transplantation (CMT) from healthy donor chickens on the growth performance, immunity, and microbial composition of newly hatched chicks and evaluated the effect of sample storage on the microbial diversity of the cecal samples. A healthy "Wannan Yellow Chicken line" was selected as the donor, and 180 1-day-old chicks from the same line were used as recipients for a 60-day feed trial...

The corona of the glans clitoris is a clinically important yet poorly understood anatomical structure. There has been longstanding confusion regarding the prevalence of the corona of the glans clitoris and, moreover, its very existence. Therefore, this anatomical study assesses the prevalence of the corona of the glans clitoris and the gross anatomy of the proximal glans clitoris. Anatomy was assessed in 104 female donor bodies ranging in age from 50 to 102 years with an average age-at-death of 78.1±10...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) approaches for ulcerative colitis (UC) have been investigated with conflicting results. We have recently published the clinical outcomes from the CRAFT-UC Trial using FMT with the UC Exclusion Diet (UCED), compared with FMT alone. Here we aimed to compare the two FMT strategies in terms of microbial profile and function. METHODS: Subjects recruited to the CRAFT-UC study with available pre- and post-intervention fecal samples were included...

BACKGROUND: Large skin lesions of the upper extremity tend to be ''long and narrow'' in shape, and the currently used repair and reconstruction protocols still have some drawbacks, including difficulty in closure of the donor area, poor cosmetic appearance of the donor and recipient areas, and low flap survival rates. The ilioinguinal flap has been more widely used for repair and reconstruction of various complex conditions. In order to improve the versatility of the flap design and to achieve better aesthetic results, we report a study on the improved design of Compound SCIP flap for repairing "long and narrow" large skin defects of the upper extremity by using a modified design of the ilioinguinal flap for the procurement of perforating blood vessels and flap excision...

The coupling of excitons in π-conjugated molecules to high-frequency vibrational modes, particularly carbon-carbon stretch modes (1,000-1,600 cm-1 ) has been thought to be unavoidable1,2 . These high-frequency modes accelerate non-radiative losses and limit the performance of light-emitting diodes, fluorescent biomarkers and photovoltaic devices. Here, by combining broadband impulsive vibrational spectroscopy, first-principles modelling and synthetic chemistry, we explore exciton-vibration coupling in a range of π-conjugated molecules...

BACKGROUND: The in vitro permeation test (IVPT) using ex vivo human skin is a sensitive and robust model system that has been vital in elucidating the fundamental parameters surrounding the absorption of both therapeutic agents and industrial chemicals through skin. FDA and OECD IVPT Guidances recommend that each skin section selected for study should be screened prior to use to ensure that the stratum corneum integrity is retained. Three methods are currently considered acceptable: 1) transepidermal water loss (TEWL), 2) electrical resistance, and 3) tritiated water (3 H2 O) absorption...

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is considered a costly disease. Depending on the risk stratification, the patient may receive consolidation with cycles of intermediate doses of cytarabine, auto-HSCT or allo-HSCT according to availability in each service and the availability of a compatible donor. Literature data indicate that safety and effectiveness do not differ between consolidation therapy with intermediate-dose cytarabine or auto-HSCT, and so the cost can help physicians and health managers in their choice...

The traditional procedure for multivisceral transplant (MVT) is to transplant the stomach, pancreas, intestine, and liver en bloc. During surgery, the native spleen is routinely removed from the recipient, and it usually creates more space in the abdomen to insert the allogeneic graft. Thus, recipients often become asplenic after MVT. Considering all of the risks and benefits, we advocate that temporary transplant of the donor spleen could be the best option for MVT recipients; it could potentially reduce the rate of intestinal allograft rejection without increasing the risk for graft-versus-host disease...

Kidney transplantation remains the gold standard for patients with end-stage renal disease, but severe donor organ shortage has led to long waiting lists. The utilization of expanded criteria donor kidneys within the category of deceased donors has enlarged the pool of available kidneys for transplantation, however, these grafts often have increased risk for delayed graft function or reduced graft survival following transplantation. During brain or circulatory death, neutrophils are recruited to the vascular beds of kidneys where a pro-inflammatory microenvironment might prime the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), weblike structures, containing proteolytic enzymes, DNA and histones...
