OBJECTIVE: Our research aimed to detect the efficacy of non-surgical periodontal treatment with Nd: YAG laser and scaling and root planning (SRP) for chronic periodontitis. METHODS: We recruited chronic periodontitis patients who have more than four teeth with clinical pocket depth of 4-8 mm. These teeth were distributed in four different zones within the oral cavity. Moreover, the teeth were single root teeth and not adjacent to each other. The subordinated teeth were randomized into four groups, as follows: no treatment (C group), simple SRP (SRP group), Nd: YAG laser after SRP treatment (SRP+L group), and SRP after Nd: YAG laser treatment (L+SRP group)...

Hyperhidrosis o`ccurs when the body produces sweat beyond what is essential to maintain thermal homeostasis. The condition tends to occur in areas marked by high-eccrine density such as the axillae, palms, and soles and less commonly in the craniofacial area. The current standard of care is topical aluminum chloride hexahydrate antiperspirant (10-20%), but other treatments such as anticholinergics, clonidine, propranolol, antiadrenergics, injections with attenuated botulinum toxin, microwave technology, and surgery have been therapeutically implicated as well...

PURPOSE: To describe a case of severe capsule contraction syndrome causing significant astigmatism due to intraocular lens (IOL) folding. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Capsule fibrosis and contraction resulted in bending of the hydrophilic IOL along its long axis. Anterior Nd:YAG capsulotomy resolved the situation and restored the patient's visual acuity. CONCLUSIONS: Hydrophilic IOLs are more susceptible to capsule contraction due to the increased flexibility of highly hydrated materials...

RATIONALE: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective option for neuropathic pain treatment. New technological developments, as high-frequency (HF) and theta burst stimulation (TBS), have shown promising results, although putative mechanisms of action still remain debated. METHODS: thirty patients with lower back pain were enrolled and underwent LF, HF, and TBS. Laser evoked potentials (LEPs) were recorded by using a Nd:YAG laser. Amplitudes and latencies of the main two components (N1, N2/P2) were compared among different experimental sessions...

An acoustic spectroscopic approach to detect contents within different packaging, with substantially wider applicability than other currently available subsurface spectroscopies, is presented. A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) pulsed laser (13 ns pulse length) operated at 1 Hz was used to generate the sound field of a two-component system at a distance of 50 cm. The acoustic emission was captured using a unidirectional microphone and analyzed in the frequency domain. The focused laser pulse hitting the system, with intensity above that necessary to ablate the irradiated surface, transferred an impulsive force which led the structure to vibrate...

Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is a current therapeutic option but its efficacy for the treatment of long-lasting persistent AF (l-lpAF) remains suboptimal. We tested the laser method as an alternative for catheter ablation of l-lpAF by using an open-irrigated electrode laser mapping and ablation (ELMA) catheter. Laser ablation was attempted in 48 patients aged 50-81 years (69 ± 7.6 y, female = 28) with drug resistant (3.5 trials) l-lpAF (≥12 months). All of the patients had comorbidities: congestive heart failure NYHA II-III (100%), hypertension 29 (60%), coronary artery disease 19 (40%), and heart valve defect 17 (35%)...

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen commensal in the oral cavity, vagina, and healthy skin. Common therapeutic options for fungal infections are topical or systemic antifungal drugs. Recently, in cutaneous pathologies, lasers and light-based treatments have emerged showing few contraindications and minimal side effects. The Q-switched (Nd-YAG) laser at a wavelength of 1064 nm has been shown to be useful in dermatology, dentistry, and some other medical specialties. It is used to treat onychomycoses, warts, and wounds and in some other treatments...

We present results on laser-assisted formation of two- and three-dimensional structures comprised of gold nanoparticles in glass. The sample material was gold-ion-doped borosilicate glass prepared by conventional melt quenching. The nanoparticle growth technique consisted of two steps - laser-induced defect formation and annealing. The first step was realized by irradiating the glass by nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses over a wide range of fluences and number of applied pulses. The irradiation by nanosecond laser pulses (emitted by a Nd:YAG laser system) induced defect formation, expressed by brown coloration of the glass sample, only at a wavelength of 266 nm...

This study describes the fundamentals of laser-bone interaction during bone machining through an integrated experimental-computational approach. Two groups of laser machining parameters identified the effects of process thermodynamics and kinetics on machining attributes at micro to macro. A continuous wave Yb-fiber Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1070 nm) with fluences in the range of 3.18 J/mm2-8.48 J/mm2 in combination of laser power (300 W-700 W) and machining speed (110 mm/s-250 mm/s) were considered for machining trials...

In order to obtain more detailed characteristics and information in highly turbulent flames, for a better understanding of the transient behavior of eddies in such flames, a measurement technique with sufficient temporal resolution is requested. However, the probing of species distributions relevant in combustion (e.g. OH, CH2O) with ultra-high-speed laser diagnostics still remains a challenge. Nd:YAG clusters commercially available can generate only 4-8 pulses, although with high laser energy. Systems based on a diode-pumped solid-state Nd:YAG laser combined with a dye laser produce only about 100 μJ pulse energy at ultra-high repetition rates (≥50 kHz)...
