A novel approach for serum analysis by dried matrix spot (DMS) technique is proposed. The methodology consists of sampling filter paper discs (2.7 mm in diameter) containing the large amount of serum retained after a single spotting. Several oxidizers (sodium chlorate, sodium azide, acetic acid, formic acid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumm chloride/bromide) were tested (oxidizers premixed with the sample before spotting, and papers previously soaked in concentrated additive/oxidizer solutions). Direct multi-element determination (Al, Be, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, Rb, Se, V, and Zn) in dried serum spots at very low levels was therefore assessed by laser ablation (LA) coupled with inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)...

Purpose: To report two cases of panuveitis in immunocompetent patients in which cytomegalovirus was involved. Observation: Case 1 was a 46-year-old man who had a history of recurrent anterior chamber inflammations in his left eye. After Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy, he developed panuveitis with vitreous haze and periphlebitis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) examination revealed the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in the anterior chamber (AC). He responded well to a series of intravitreal injections of ganciclovir (GCV)...

Purpose: To present fundus images of a case with severe preretinal hemorrhage in diabetic retinopathy that was treated with posterior hyaloidotomy with an Nd:YAG laser. Observations: A 35-year-old diabetic patient presented with sudden painless loss of vision due to severe preretinal hemorrhage over the macular area and high risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Her visual acuity was counting fingers. Posterior hyaloid face was treated with Nd:YAG laser (posterior hyaloidotomy)...

A 77-year-old man had cataract surgery in the left eye in March 2017. A toric intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted because of astigmatism. The postoperative meridian of the IOL was located nearly exactly in the planned meridian, which was controlled 1 week later with ray-tracing aberrometry (iTrace) and the smartphone application Axis Assistant. The referring ophthalmologist proceeded directly with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy in his own office, after which the meridian of the implanted toric IOL was rotated more than 115 degrees...

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a cosmetically disfiguring condition. Many treatment options are available which are effective in halting the progression of the disease. The treatment of persistent pigmentation is still a challenge. We describe the use of Q-switched Nd-YAG laser in 13 patients with stable LPP using a standard protocol. Most of our patients showed complete to near-complete resolution of pigment without much complications.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological and clinical outcomes following nonsurgical treatment by either scaling and root planing, combination of Nd:YAG and Er:YAG lasers, or by Er:YAG laser treatment alone. The study involved 60 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis, randomly assigned into one of three treatment groups of 20 patients. The first group received scaling and root planing by hand instruments (SRP group), the second group received Er:YAG laser treatment alone (Er group), and the third group received combined treatment with Nd:YAG and Er:YAG lasers (NdErNd group)...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Er:YAG laser in the treatment of AKN as compared to long pulsed Nd:YAG laser. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 30 male patients with AKN. Their ages ranged from 19 to 47 years with a mean age of 36...

In this work, we present functionalization of AISI 316 L surfaces by nanosecond Nd:YAG laser texturing and adsorption of superhydrophobic fluoroalkylsilane functionalized 30-nm silica nanoparticles. Surface modification by varying the distance between laser-produced micro(μ)-channels leads to different surface roughnesses. After nanosilica coating, the superhydrophilic laser-textured surfaces change into superhydrophobic surfaces with the same μ-roughness. A higher μ-channel density leads to more hydrophobic surfaces after coating...

To evaluate efficacy and safety of picosecond 755 nm alexandrite laser as compared to 1064 nm QS-Nd:YAG laser for melasma treatment in Asians. Twelve patients received 4 sessions of treatments at 1-month interval in a split-face manner. The right side of each patient's face received 755 nm picosecond laser, and the other side received 1064 nm QS-Nd:YAG laser. Zoom handpiece of 755 nm picosecond laser at fluence of 0.88-1.18 J/cm2 was applied. The treatment protocol used for 1064 nm QS-Nd:YAG laser was 8 mm spot size at fluence of 2...

Methods. A total of 102 lithium disilicate glass ceramic samples (IPS e.max Press), measuring 5 mm in diameter and 4 mm in thickness, were randomly assigned to 6 groups (n=17): group 1, no surface preparation (control); group 2, acid etching with 9.5% hydrofluoric acid (HF); group 3, surface preparation with 4...

Xanthelasmas are localized accumulation of lipid deposits on the eyelids. Lesions are typically asymptomatic and treatment is often sought for cosmetic purposes. Unfortunately, there is paucity of strong evidence in the literature for the effective treatment of normolipidemic xanthelasmas. A literature search using the term "xanthelasma" was carried out in PubMed and Medline databases. Only articles related to treatment were considered and analyzed for their data. Commonly cited treatments include topical trichloroacetic acid, liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, and various lasers including carbon dioxide, Er:YAG, Q-switched Nd:YAG, and pulse dye laser...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser for treatment of epithelial ingrowth after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with epithelial ingrowth presented to Sohag refractive center, Sohag, Egypt, between January 2015 and March 2017. Only 41 patients (18 females and 23 males, mean age: 33.4 years) involving 41 eyes were indicated for treatment by Nd:YAG laser as the rest of the eyes were only under observation...

Chinese hybrid rice of different varieties, growing in paddies in the Pingqiao district, north of Xinyang city, Henan province, China, was studied in detailed spectroscopic characteristics using laser-induced fluorescence. The base for the studies was the new South China Normal University mobile lidar laboratory, which was dispatched on site, providing facilities both for laboratory studies using a 405 nm excitation source as well as remote sensing measurements at ranges from around 40 m-120 m, mostly employing the 532 nm output from a Nd:YAG laser...

OBJECTIVES: Café-au-lait macules (CALMs) are benign cutaneous hyperpigmentary disorders. Usually, laser therapies for cosmetic concerns result in more severe side effects in the people of Asian descent than that of Caucasians. Unfortunately, there is no gold standard for the laser treatment of CALMs in skin of people of Asian descent. To investigate the efficacy and safety of a high-fluence 1064-nm Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment of CALMs in Asian patients...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the efficacy and safety of laser treatment of oral vascular lesions using the multiple spot irradiation technique with a single-pulsed wave. BACKGROUND DATA: In laser therapy for vascular lesions, heat accumulation induced by excessive irradiation can cause adverse events postoperatively, including ulcer formation, resultant scarring, and severe pain. To prevent heat accumulation and side effects, we have applied a multiple pulsed spot irradiation technique, the so-called "leopard technique" (LT) to oral vascular lesions...
