This article engages with the maternal education politics in late colonial Sri Lanka by looking at the implementation of maternal health in the gendered syllabus of middle-class girls' schools. After decades of gender-specific education, the 1930s saw a homogenisation of teachings in these schools through the impact of Mary Rutnam's health manuals. Rutnam was a Canadian doctor who had been living in Sri Lanka for most of her adult life and was seen as a local. She was also active in establishing women's and girls' organisations and political groups...

Implementing a signal-switching mechanism for the selective use of integrated sensors and actuators plays a crucial role in streamlining the functionality of miniaturized devices. Here, a liquid metal droplet (LMD)-based signal-switching mechanism is introduced to achieve such functionality. Pressure modulation with a 100-μm spatial resolution enabled precise control of the position of the LMDs within a channel. After integrating the channel with asymmetrically structured electrodes, the effect of the shuttle-like movement of LMD on the temporal changes in the overall capacitance was investigated...

To solve the clinical transformation dilemma of lamin A/C (LMNA)-mutated dilated cardiomyopathy (LMD), we developed an LMNA-mutated primate model based on the similarity between the phenotype of primates and humans. We screened out patients with LMD and compared the clinical data of LMD with TTN-mutated and mutation-free dilated cardiomyopathy to obtain the unique phenotype. After establishment of the LMNA c.357-2A>G primate model, primates were continuously observed for 48 months, and echocardiographic, electrophysiological, histologic, and transcriptional data were recorded...

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related leptomeningeal disease (BC-LMD) is a dire diagnosis for 5-8% of patients with breast cancer (BC). We conducted a retrospective review of BC-LMD patients diagnosed at Moffitt Cancer Center from 2011 to 2020, to determine the changing incidence of BC-LMD, factors which are associated with the progression of BC CNS metastasis to BC-LMD, and factors which are associated with OS for patients with BC-LMD. METHODS: Patients with BC and brain/spinal metastatic disease were identified...

Influenza is a significant public health concern, with Italy being profoundly impacted annually. Despite extensive vaccination campaigns and cooperative initiatives between the Public Health Departments of Local Healthcare Authorities and family physicians, low vaccine uptake rates persist. This study builds upon the OBVIOUS project, providing an updated picture of influenza vaccine uptake in Italy through a representative sample. A cross-sectional computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) survey of 10,001 Italian citizens was conducted between 31 March and 5 June 2023...

BACKGROUND: Hemangiomas are aberrant proliferations of blood vessels and the most frequent benign pediatric soft tissue tumors. Although they are common, genital localization is rare. This study aimed to assist doctors in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of pediatric vulvovaginal hemangiomas by conducting a review of the literature. METHODS: We conducted a literature review including papers published between August 2009 and May 2023. RESULTS: While most hemangiomas are usually indolent and resolve with time, in some cases, especially cervicovaginal and uterine ones, they might present with severe symptoms like heavy bleeding and need further instrumental investigation for diagnosis, like CT or MRI...

BACKGROUND: Local and international research has identified rural origin as an important reason why healthcare professionals (HCPs) work in rural areas, and in South Africa (SA) considerable effort has gone into recruiting and training rural-origin students. However, there is little information in the SA literature on where graduates supported by these initiatives work, and whether they contribute to the rural workforce long term. OBJECTIVE: To determine the number of years that rural-origin Umthombo Youth Development Foundation (UYDF)-supported graduates of different disciplines worked at rural public healthcare facilities (PHCFs)...

Commonly, research investigations on social policy reform primarily examine the national processes at the core of policy formation rather than considering their global context. Concerns are raised regarding the diffusion and influence of global health norms on Thai universal health coverage policymaking. The findings demonstrate that global health ideas and actors have an impact on national policymaking and that they can share ideas in a variety of ways, including glocalization, vernacularization, policy learning, and policy entrepreneur intervention, in setting the agenda for national universal health coverage...

The lungs represent 20% of the cases. Fewer than 10% are found in other sites, including the bone, brain, spleen, and kidneys. Owing to the extremely short supply of donor lungs in Japan, a unique medical consultant (MC) system was initiated in 2002 to increase the organ availability through intensive management of donors. First, heart transplant surgeons were sent to procurement hospitals as MCs to assess donor organ function and provide intensive care to donors. MCs requested that donor attending doctors perform frequent phlegm aspiration with a bronchoscope, leading to a higher lung availability and better outcomes after lung transplantation...

Medical image segmentation is crucial for accurately locating lesion regions and assisting doctors in diagnosis. However, most existing methods fail to effectively utilize both local details and global semantic information in medical image segmentation, resulting in the inability to effectively capture fine-grained content such as small targets and irregular boundaries. To address this issue, we propose a novel Pyramid Fourier Deformable Network (PFD-Net) for medical image segmentation, which leverages the strengths of CNN and Transformer...

Australia, in common with many countries globally, has a shortage of doctors working rurally. Whilst strategies and current research focus on recruitment, attrition from rural practice is a significant determinant of such shortages. Understanding doctors' decisions to stay or leave, once recruited, may provide further insights on how to address this rural differential. This study comprises a qualitative study of 21 recently recruited nationally-trained doctors and international medical graduates to a rural area of New South Wales, Australia...

However, there is minimal guidance and no training materials for EResus tailored to non-burn care providers.
