OBJECTIVE: Pituitary apoplexy (PA) has been traditionally considered a neurosurgical emergency, yet retrospective single-institution studies suggest similar outcomes among patients managed medically. We established a multicenter international prospective registry to compare presentation and outcomes in PA patients treated with surgery or medical management alone. METHODS: A centralized database captured demographics, comorbidities, clinical presentation, visual findings, hormonal status, and imaging features at admission...

Austropuccinia psidii is a biotrophic fungus that causes myrtle rust. First described in Brazil, it has since spread to become a globally important pathogen that infects more than 480 myrtaceous species. One of the most important commercial crops affected by A. psidii is eucalypt, a widely grown forestry tree. The A. psidii-Eucalyptus spp. interaction is poorly understood, but pathogenesis is likely driven by pathogen-secreted effector molecules. Here, we identified and characterized a total of 255 virulence effector candidates using a genome assembly of A...

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus has caused a devastating global pandemic of respiratory illness. To understand viral pathogenesis, methods are available for studying dissociated cells in blood, nasal samples, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and similar, but a robust platform for deep tissue characterization of molecular and cellular responses to virus infection in the lungs is still lacking. We developed an innovative spatial multi-omics platform to investigate COVID-19-infected lung tissues. Five tissue-profiling technologies were combined by a novel computational mapping methodology to comprehensively characterize and compare the transcriptome and targeted proteome of virus infected and uninfected tissues...

BACKGROUND: Chagas heart disease (CHD) is characterized by progressive myocardial inflammation associated with myocardial fibrosis and segmental abnormalities that may lead to malignant ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. This arrhythmia might be related to the persistence of parasitemia or inflammation in the myocardium in late-stage CHD. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has been used to detect myocardial inflammation in non-ischemic cardiomyopathies, such as sarcoidosis, and might be useful for risk prediction in patients with CHD...

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) represents an atypical tumor composed of myofibroblasts with a variety of histological patterns and with a high tendency to local recurrence and a low probability of distant metastases. LGMS has predilection for the head and neck regions, especially the oral cavity. This study aimed to report 13 new cases of LGMS arising in the oral and maxillofacial region. This study included LGMS cases from five oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories in four different countries (Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, and South Africa)...

Lipid bilayer membranes are often represented as a continuous nonpolar slab with a certain thickness bounded by two more polar interfaces. Phenomena such as peptide binding to the membrane surface, folding, insertion, translocation, and diffusion are typically interpreted on the basis of this view. In this Perspective, I argue that this membrane representation as a hydrophobic continuum solvent is not adequate to understand peptide-lipid interactions. Lipids are not small compared to membrane-active peptides: their sizes are similar...

Due to the increase in the number of mobile stations in recent years, cooperative relaying systems have emerged as a promising technique for improving the quality of fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks with an extension of the coverage area. In this paper, we propose a two-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and code-division multiple-access (OFDM-CDMA) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system, which combines, both at the source and relay nodes, a tensor space-time-frequency (TSTF) coding with a multiple symbol matrices Kronecker product (MSMKron), called TSTF-MSMKron coding, aiming to increase the diversity gain...

For more than three decades, major efforts in sampling and analyzing tree diversity in South America have focused almost exclusively on trees with stems of at least 10 and 2.5 cm diameter, showing highest species diversity in the wetter western and northern Amazon forests. By contrast, little attention has been paid to patterns and drivers of diversity in the largest canopy and emergent trees, which is surprising given these have dominant ecological functions. Here, we use a machine learning approach to quantify the importance of environmental factors and apply it to generate spatial predictions of the species diversity of all trees (dbh ≥ 10 cm) and for very large trees (dbh ≥ 70 cm) using data from 243 forest plots (108,450 trees and 2832 species) distributed across different forest types and biogeographic regions of the Brazilian Amazon...

In recent years, the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for craniopharyngiomas has proven to be a safe option for extensive tumor resection, with minimal or no manipulation of the optic nerves and excellent visualization of the superior hypophyseal branches when compared to the Transcranial Approach (TCA). However, there is an ongoing debate regarding the criteria for selecting different approaches. To explore the current results of EEA and discuss its role in the management of craniopharyngiomas, we performed MEDLINE, Embase, and LILACS searches from 2012 to 2022...

Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most economically and socially important cereals in the world. Several strategies such as biofortification have been developed in a way eco-friendly and sustainable to enhance crop productivity. This study implemented an agronomic itinerary in Ariete and Ceres rice varieties in experimental fields using the foliar application of selenium (Se) to increase rice nutritional value. At strategic phases of the plant's development (at the end of booting, anthesis, and at the milky grain stage), they were sprayed with sodium selenate (Na2 SeO4 ) and sodium selenite (Na2 SeO3 )...
