Male infertility is a rare but certainly underestimated iatrogenic complication of inguinal hernia repair. The use of polypropylene mesh, recommended by the European Hernia Society, either via the traditional, open or laparoscopic approach, is responsible for surrounding inflammation followed by fibrosis, but there is no proven increase in vas deferens obstruction found in the literature. Prevention is essential to reduce the incidence of this complication including screening for patients at risk and mastery of surgical techniques...

The sexual transmission of viruses is responsible for the spread of multiple infectious diseases. Although the HIV/AIDS pandemic remains fueled by sexual contacts with infected semen, the origin of virus in semen is still unknown. In a substantial number of HIV- infected men, viral strains present in semen differ from the ones in blood, suggesting that HIV is locally produced within the genital tract. Such local production may be responsible for the persistence of HIV in semen despite effective antiretroviral therapy...

Determination and control of spermatozoa quality in crustacean aquaculture is an important issue for successful and controlled reproduction. Investigation of spermatozoa number in spermatophores is a basic and common parameter for determining the reproductive quality in farmed decapods. In the present study, spermatozoa extraction from spermatophores located in the ductus deferens was conducted in Pontastacus leptodactylus using different incubation times and temperatures. The results indicate that the duration of incubation and temperature affected (P < 0...

We report the case of a 46-year-old Chinese male patient who visited our clinic complaining of infertility. Semen analysis revealed azoospermia, and azoospermia factor c region partial deletion (b1/b3) was detected using Y chromosome microdeletion analysis. Testicular sperm extraction was performed after genetic counseling. The bilateral ductus deferens and a portion of the epididymis were absent, whereas the remaining epididymis was expanded. Motile intratesticular spermatozoa were successfully extracted from the seminiferous tubule...

Imposex is a disorder caused by organotins, mainly tributyltin, which results in the appearance of male sexual characteristics in females of gastropod mollusks. The main objective of this work was to make a critical analysis of the relationship between imposex and butyltin body burdens in Nucella lapillus and Nassarius reticulatus. Specifically, this study evaluates possible additive effects among butyltins, proposes scales of effects based on robust statistical criteria as alternatives to existing ones and defines the body burdens of TBT in N...

As a non-threatened hystricognath rodent species, Spix's yellow-toothed cavies can be used as a model for the development of assisted reproductive techniques for the conservation of closely related species. The objective was to establish a functional protocol for cryopreservation of epididymal sperm from these cavies. Twelve sexually mature males, ∼2 y old and weighing ∼300 g, were euthanized. Sperm were recovered by retrograde flushing of the vas deferens and cauda epididymis with Tris extender. Thereafter, sperm were extended in Tris plus 20% egg yolk, with 3%, 6% or 9% glycerol or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), placed in 0...

We have investigated the cardiac and pressor responses to (±)-ephedrine and (-)-ephedrine in pentobarbitone anaesthetized male wistar rats. The tachycardiac responses to (±)- and (-)-ephedrine were similar, but pressor responses to (-)-ephedrine (10 mg/kg) were significantly greater than those to (±)-ephedrine, and for both, the pressor response was followed by a small depressor response. Sympathectomy did not affect pressor responses, but significantly increased the later depressor response to both compounds...

Molecular investigations were performed in order to determine the major characteristics of voltage-gated Na+ channel β-subunits in mouse vas deferens. The use of real-time quantitative PCR showed that the expression of Scn1b was significantly higher than that of other β-subunit genes (Scn2b - Scn4b). Immunoreactivity of Scn1b proteins was also detected in the inner circular and outer longitudinal smooth muscle of mouse vas deferens. In whole-cell recordings, the actions of 4,9-anhydroTTX on voltage-gated Na+ current peak amplitude in myocytes (i...

The fine structure of the seminal vesicle and reproductive accessory glands was investigated in Bittacidae of Mecoptera using light and transmission electron microscopy. The male reproductive system of Bittacidae mainly consists of a pair of testes, a pair of vasa deferentia, and an ejaculatory sac. The vas deferens is greatly expanded for its middle and medio-posterior parts to form a well-developed seminal vesicle. The seminal vesicle is composed of layers of developed muscles and a mono-layered epithelium surrounding the small central lumen...

α1 -Adrenoceptor (α1 -AR) antagonists are considered to be the most effective monotherapy agents for lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). In this study, we synthesized compounds 2-17, which are novel piperazine derivatives that contain methyl phenylacetate. We then evaluated the vasodilatory activities of these compounds. Among them, we found that compounds 2, 7, 12, which contain 2-OCH3 , 2-CH3 or 2, 5-CH3 , respectively, exhibited potent α1 -blocking activity similar to protype drug naftopidil (1)...

Polyorchidism is a rare condition usually incidentally discovered in young patients investigated with ultrasound for unrelated reasons. It is characterized by the presence of unilateral or, rarely, bilateral supernumerary testes which, depending on the type of polyorchidism, may have their own epididymis and vas deferens. Ultrasound, including B-mode and color Doppler technique, represents the primary imaging modality for the evaluation of scrotal diseases, including the characterization of supernumerary testes, which normally appear identical to the ipsilateral testicular parenchyma on every ultrasonographic technique performed...

Lead (Pb) effects on testis histology, as well as sperm quality and oxidative status were evaluated in male Chestnut Capped Blackbird (Chrysomus ruficapillus). Wild blackbirds were captured, immediately sampled (field group) or kept in captivity and treated with a single intraperitoneal injection of saline solution (control) or saline solution with Pb acetate (50 or 100 mg/kg Pb). Seven days after injection, whole blood, ductus deferens and testis samples were collected. Increased Pb concentrations were observed in whole blood and testis of Pb-exposed blackbirds with respect to those from field and control blackbirds...
