BACKGROUND: The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is economically important in European fisheries and is a key organism in local marine ecosystems. Despite multi-faceted scientific interest in this species, our current knowledge of genetic resources in this species remains very limited. Here, we generated a reference de novo transcriptome for N. norvegicus from multiple tissues in both sexes. Bioinformatic analyses were conducted to detect transcripts that were expressed exclusively in either males or females...

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Surgical vasectomy remains the gold standard for fertility control in men. Endoluminal occlusion of the seminal ducts, thus avoiding an external incision, may become an appealing alternative to this approach. As our group has shown, nontraumatic endoscopic inspection of the seminal ducts is feasible in the human cadaver. We investigated the feasibility and reliability of occlusion using several commercially available medical sealing agents in the porcine vas deferens (VD)...

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) regulates several biological functions via selective activation of the N/OFQ receptor (NOP), a member of the opioid receptor family. We recently identified a new high affinity and highly selective NOP agonist AT-403. In this study, we characterized the functional profile of AT-403 and compared it to other known nonpeptide NOP agonists Ro 65-6570, Ro 2q, SCH-221510, MCOPPB, AT-202 and SCH-486757, using the following assays: GTPγ[(35) S] stimulated binding, calcium mobilization assay in cells-expressing human NOP or classical opioid receptors and chimeric G proteins, bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) based assay for studying NOP receptor interaction with G protein and arrestin, and the electrically stimulated mouse vas deferens bioassay...

Congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) is an important cause of obstructive azoospermia and male infertility worldwide. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutations are the main pathogenic cause, although a proportion of cases are still unexplained. Recently, adhesion G protein-coupled receptor G2 (ADGRG2) gene, a novel pathogenic gene for CBAVD was identified. We did a single population replication study in Chinese CBAVD patients to replicate its role in CBAVD developing...

This study demonstrates the use of retrograde perfusion sphincterometry (RPS) to measure retrograde leak point pressure (RLPP) during robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) before establishment of pneumoperitoneum, after insufflation; and before and after the use of an autologous sub-urethral sling using vas deferens, after the anastomosis was completed. The adjustment of the sling to achieve optimal sub-urethral support was achieved by measuring the RLPP intra operatively using RPS. While the study does demonstrate the use of a simple technique to study the RLPP during RALP, data to confirm that the sling helps with early urinary continence (EUC) is lacking...

We, herein, present a male neonate with an antenatally detected intra-abdominal cyst who presented at 18 days of life at which time, the ultrasound revealed a 5×4 cm cyst. Since he was asymptomatic, we planned to repeat the ultrasound a month later and operate if the cyst showed no regression. However, a week later, he presented with an acute abdomen, irritable cry and a repeat ultrasound showing a larger (8×6 cm) cystic mass with debris within. He was taken up for an emergency laparotomy. Intraoperatively, the cyst was found arising from the left lateral abdominal wall free from all structures with a twisted pedicle...

Reproductive disorders are more common in men with epilepsy taking anticonvulsant medications. Antiseizure/anticonvulsant drugs and seizures in medial temporal lobe structures may cause gonadal dysfunction, including infertility, decreased libido, and potency. Levels of circulating bioavailable testosterone are affected by the aromatase enzyme, which converts testosterone into estrogen and may be affected by seizure medications. However, the relationship of anticonvulsant drugs with central aromatase levels is not clear...

The aim of the study was to detect the frequency of the CFTR gene variants poly-T, TG repeats and c.1408A>G p.Met470Val (M470V) in Indian men with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). Men diagnosed with CBAVD (n = 76), their female partners (n = 76) and healthy men from general population (n = 50) were recruited. Genomic DNA was isolated and the polymorphic regions of IVS9- c.1210-12T [5] and M470V were amplified using specific primers followed by Sanger's DNA sequencing. A statistically significant increase in the frequency of heterozygous IVS9- c...

Varicocele is commonly observed in male partners of infertile couples. The surgical ligation of varicoceles under microscopy can be safely performed by a skilled andrologist with most patients subsequently experiencing an improvement in semen quality. This is the first case in which obstructive azoospermia occurred after high inguinal varicocelectomy. The vas deferens was disrupted near the internal inguinal ring by fibrous tissue. A vasovasostomy was performed and semen parameters subsequently recovered.

Starting from enantiomerically pure amino acids, 1,4-diazepanes with various substituents in 1, 2, and 4-position were synthesized following the late stage diversification strategy. The key step in the formation of the seven-membered ring was the intramolecular EDC coupling of amino acids 15, 26, and 39. The configuration in 2-position does not influence the σ1 affinity and selectivity over related receptors. A cyclohexylmethyl or a butyl group are the preferred substituents in 4-position, whereas a methyl moiety in 2-position and a (substituted) benzyl moiety in 1-position result in the highest σ1 affinity...

We investigated reproductive features of the dipsadid snake Erythrolamprus poecilogyrus sublineatus in the southernmost Brazilian coast, a subtropical region characterized by well-marked seasons. Females are significantly smaller than males, have a shorter tail, and reach sexual maturity at later times along their development. In contrast to tropical subspecies, E. p. sublineatus females presented a seasonal pattern, with secondary follicles occurring from late winter to early autumn and egg production restricted to the whole spring and early summer...

Several studies have suggested that propiconazole (PROP) may be an endocrine disruptor; possibly altering the activity of the CYP51 enzyme, which is part of the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway required for the production of sexual steroid hormones. Another PROP effect is inhibition of the aromatase enzyme that converts androgens into estrogens, which could lead to negative effects on reproductive parameters. Therefore, the present study evaluated the reproductive and developmental toxicity of PROP by exposing two generations (F1 and F2) of male rats to this fungicide, since a previous study from our lab reported that PROP has anti-estrogenic and anti-androgenic activities (Costa et al...

In an earlier report, we demonstrated an antipsychotic-like activity of a methanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia Linn fruit in mouse models and postulated the contribution of its bioactive principles, scopoletin and rutin. Moreover, the antidopaminergic activities of scopoletin and rutin were reported in isolated vas deferens preparations. In the present study, scopoletin and rutin were assessed for antipsychotic-like activity using apomorphine-induced climbing behavior and methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice...

Genital abnormalities such as congenital uni/bilateral absence of the vas deferens are very rare in Klinefelter's syndrome. Here, we report three cases of Klinefelter's syndrome with unilateral absence of the vas deferens. All cases had small testicles, and unilateral vas deferentia were not palpable. Hormonal evaluations revealed hypergonadotropism. One case had elevated prolactin level, and pituitary adenoma was detected by magnetic resonance imaging. All cases were diagnosed as Klinefelter's syndrome (one of them had mosaicism) cytogenetically, and some CFTR gene mutations were detected...

PURPOSE: Sexual dysfunction is a common condition in patients taking antipsychotics and is the most bothersome symptom and adverse drug effect, resulting in a negative effect on treatment compliance. Pharmacology research into human ejeculatory disorders is limited to clinical studies with registered drugs affecting the ejaculation process; therefore, animal research has become the need. We aimed to investigate the effects of haloperidol, clozapine and aripiprazole on serotonin, noradrenaline, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and potassium chloride (KCl)-induced contractions of the vas deferens in order to evaluate the effect of haloperidol, clozapine and aripiprazole on the contraction of the vas deferens...

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyomas are rare benign tumors that can occur in the male urinary tract. We present a unique case of leiomyoma of the vas deferens. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the clinical case of a 69-year-old patient with a suspected bulk close to the right epididymis, which turned out to be a leiomyoma of the vas deferens. To our knowledge, it is the fourth case in literature. CONCLUSIONS: A proper identification and the knowledge of this pathology, even if it is a very unusual event, is necessary to avoid a surgical over treatment and preserve the testicle, by removing only the tumor...

Hedgehogs are small spiny-coated insectivores. Due to their low body weight, calm character, and easy maintenance, they are kept as pets. It is therefore worthwhile to care about hedgehogs' health problems and to provide pet owners with information about their reproduction. Moreover, it is necessary to be familiar with their anatomy so as to satisfy the need to improve nutrition and medical care, even surgery. This study was carried out on five adult male European hedgehogs euthanized in a chloroform chamber...

INTRODUCTION: Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare type of male pseudohermaphroditism. Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is characterized by one testis moving to the opposite side and both testes traversing the same inguinal canal. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-month-old boy presented with bilateral cryptorchidism. The left testis was not palpable; the right testis was canalicular with a right inguinal hernia. Ultrasound showed both testes located in the right inguinal canal...
