In an earlier report, we demonstrated an antipsychotic-like activity of a methanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia Linn fruit in mouse models and postulated the contribution of its bioactive principles, scopoletin and rutin. Moreover, the antidopaminergic activities of scopoletin and rutin were reported in isolated vas deferens preparations. In the present study, scopoletin and rutin were assessed for antipsychotic-like activity using apomorphine-induced climbing behavior and methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice...

Genital abnormalities such as congenital uni/bilateral absence of the vas deferens are very rare in Klinefelter's syndrome. Here, we report three cases of Klinefelter's syndrome with unilateral absence of the vas deferens. All cases had small testicles, and unilateral vas deferentia were not palpable. Hormonal evaluations revealed hypergonadotropism. One case had elevated prolactin level, and pituitary adenoma was detected by magnetic resonance imaging. All cases were diagnosed as Klinefelter's syndrome (one of them had mosaicism) cytogenetically, and some CFTR gene mutations were detected...

PURPOSE: Sexual dysfunction is a common condition in patients taking antipsychotics and is the most bothersome symptom and adverse drug effect, resulting in a negative effect on treatment compliance. Pharmacology research into human ejeculatory disorders is limited to clinical studies with registered drugs affecting the ejaculation process; therefore, animal research has become the need. We aimed to investigate the effects of haloperidol, clozapine and aripiprazole on serotonin, noradrenaline, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and potassium chloride (KCl)-induced contractions of the vas deferens in order to evaluate the effect of haloperidol, clozapine and aripiprazole on the contraction of the vas deferens...

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyomas are rare benign tumors that can occur in the male urinary tract. We present a unique case of leiomyoma of the vas deferens. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the clinical case of a 69-year-old patient with a suspected bulk close to the right epididymis, which turned out to be a leiomyoma of the vas deferens. To our knowledge, it is the fourth case in literature. CONCLUSIONS: A proper identification and the knowledge of this pathology, even if it is a very unusual event, is necessary to avoid a surgical over treatment and preserve the testicle, by removing only the tumor...

Hedgehogs are small spiny-coated insectivores. Due to their low body weight, calm character, and easy maintenance, they are kept as pets. It is therefore worthwhile to care about hedgehogs' health problems and to provide pet owners with information about their reproduction. Moreover, it is necessary to be familiar with their anatomy so as to satisfy the need to improve nutrition and medical care, even surgery. This study was carried out on five adult male European hedgehogs euthanized in a chloroform chamber...

INTRODUCTION: Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare type of male pseudohermaphroditism. Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is characterized by one testis moving to the opposite side and both testes traversing the same inguinal canal. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-month-old boy presented with bilateral cryptorchidism. The left testis was not palpable; the right testis was canalicular with a right inguinal hernia. Ultrasound showed both testes located in the right inguinal canal...

PURPOSE: Inguinal herniorrhaphy is the most common general surgical procedure. It is associated with frequent complications such as recurrence (1.9% with mesh), post-operative hematoma (4.5%), reduced sensation (0 - 42.8%), chronic post-operative pain (5.1%), vasal injury (0.1 - 0.53%) and infection (3 - 6%)(1-5). Drawing on our experience utilizing the operating microscope for varicocelectomy, vasectomy reversal and repair of iatrogenic vasal obstruction from hernia repair, we employed it for inguinal hernia repair...

OBJECTIVE: There is an expanding and increasingly heterogeneous population of adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Although CF is usually diagnosed in children with progressive multisystem involvement, up to 7% of CF cases are currently diagnosed de novo in adults with subtle manifestations distinct from the typical features of classic CF. The purpose of this article is to present the wide spectrum of CF in adults, including both classic and nonclassic variants, with an emphasis on the nonclassic imaging findings...

BACKGROUND: The Trypanosoma cruzi infection endemic in Latin America has now spread to several countries across four continents; this endemic involves triatomine vector-free protists. We hypothesised that the sexual transmission of T. cruzi contributes to the ongoing spread of Chagas disease. OBJECTIVES: A short-term longitudinal study was conducted to evaluate this hypothesis. METHODS: The study population comprised 109 subjects from four families, among whom 21 had been diagnosed with acute Chagas disease by direct parasitological analysis...

The possibility of long-term grape juice concentrate (GJC) consumption conferring a protective effect against cadmium (Cd)-induced damage to the epididymis, completely preserving sperm profile, was evaluated here for the first time in the scientific literature. Male Wistar rats (n = 6/per group) received an intraperitoneal Cd injection (1.2 mg/Kg) at age 80 days and GJC (2 g/Kg) by gavage from 50 days until 136 days old. Groups receiving either Cd or GJC were added. An intraperitoneal injection of saline (0...

Establishing the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) is straight forward in the majority of patients: they present with a clear clinical picture (most frequently chronic respiratory symptoms plus malabsorption), the sweat chloride value is>60mmol/L and two known disease causing CFTR mutations are identified. In less than 5% of subjects, mainly those with a milder or limited phenotype, the diagnostic process is more complex, because initial diagnostic test results are inconclusive: sweat chloride concentration in the intermediate range, less than 2 CF causing mutations identified or both...

Abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH) is the rarest type of hydrocele. This condition is characterised by a large abdominal and scrotal component connected by an isthmus within the inguinal canal. The incidence among the paediatric population is reported to be less than 3%, although it might be underdiagnosed. Several theories have been proposed in the literature but the aetiology of ASH remains unknown. Diagnosis can be made clinically and confirmed by ultrasound. Spontaneous resolution is rare and long-standing ASH may lead to complications, thus early surgical intervention is recommended...

OBJECTIVE: This article discusses scrotal ultrasonic features of patients with a congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). METHODS: Thirty-six patients with CBAVD were examined to obtain image characteristics of the bilateral testicle and epididymis by ultrasound. Each patient received a pathological examination of the sperm by percutaneous epididymal biopsy. RESULTS: Scrotal ultrasonic features were as follows: (1) testicular volumes were normal in all the 36 patients; (2) 21% (15/72) of the heads of epididymis, 67% (48/72) of the heads and bodies of epididymis, and 12% (9/72) of the heads, bodies, and tails of epididymis could be shown in the 72 epididymides of the 36 patients; (3) cystic or tubular dilation of the epididymis was obvious in all 72 abnormal epididymides; and (4) bilateral vas deferens could not be found in these patients...

Our objective was to assess the differential diagnostic value of classification of obstructive versus nonobstructive azoospermia by scrotal ultrasound. Forty patients with azoospermia were selected for our study (ages, 23-35; average, 29 ± 5.34 years). Patients were divided into the obstructive (17) or nonobstructive (23) azoospermia category. Twenty "healthy" volunteers were selected for the control group. We observed the testis, epididymis, and vas deferens in all subjects. Testicular volumes were calculated and compared with the control group for both obstructive and nonobstructive groups...

Opioid antagonists, naloxone and naltrexone have long been used in clinical practice and research. In addition to their low selectivity, they easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. Quaternization of the amine group in these molecules, (e.g. methylnaltrexone) results in negligible CNS penetration. In addition, zwitterionic compounds have been reported to have limited CNS access. The current study, for the first time gives report on the synthesis and the in vitro [competition binding, G-protein activation, isolated mouse vas deferens (MVD) and mouse colon assay] pharmacology of the zwitterionic compound, naltrexone-14-O-sulfate...

Polyorchidism is a very rare genitourinary anomaly defined with the presence of more than two testicles. Polyorchidism is associated up to 40% with undescended testicles. The present report is about an incidentally detected triorchidism case with unilateral, one atrophic undescended double testicles. A 4-year-old child, diagnosed with undescended left testicle revealed during orchiopexy polyorchidism with distinct epididymis and vas deferens. Whereas one of the testicles was in regular size; the other two were atrophic...

In earlier ex vivo studies, we reported the biphasic effect of a methanolic extract of unripe Morinda citrifolia fruit (MMC) on dopamine-induced contractility in isolated rat vas deferens preparations. The present in vivo study was designed and undertaken to further explore our earlier ex vivo findings. This study examined the effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of a methanolic extract of unripe Morinda citrifolia Linn. fruit (EA-MMC; 5-100 mg/kg, p.o.) on the dopaminergic system using mouse models of apomorphine-induced climbing time and climbing behavior, methamphetamine-induced stereotypy (sniffing, biting, gnawing, and licking) and haloperidol-induced catalepsy using the bar test...
