BACKGROUND: The increased digitization in robotic surgical procedures today enables surgeons to quantify their movements through data captured directly from the robotic system. These calculations, called objective performance indicators (OPIs), offer unprecedented detail into surgical performance. In this study, we link case- and surgical step-specific OPIs to case complexity, surgical experience and console utilization, and post-operative clinical complications across 87 robotic cholecystectomy (RC) cases...

Among the environmental factors that affect bird nesting in nest boxes, the influence of microbial communities is relatively poorly understood. In this study, nest boxes used for breeding by secondary cavity nesters were sampled before the start of the breeding season to assess the bacterial loads of the nest box in relation to their previous year status. Different parts of the wooden nest box offer variable conditions for the development of bacteria. During the breeding season, the nest box entrance hole is wiped out by birds, delivering bacteria to their bodies, but during winter, it is exposed to unfavourable external conditions...

IMPORTANCE: Postpartum transfusion is the most common indicator of severe maternal morbidity in the US. Higher rates of anemia are associated with a higher blood transfusion rate. OBJECTIVE: To determine if providing, rather than recommending, supplements with iron at prenatal visits in a medically underserved community is associated with improved hematologic indices and reduced blood transfusion. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this quality improvement study, patients who delivered between May 13 and December 13, 2020, and thus were provided a prenatal supplement with iron throughout pregnancy were compared with those who delivered between January 1 and August 1, 2019, before supplements were dispensed...

Urbanization negatively impacts aboveground biodiversity, such as bird and insect communities. City parks can reduce these negative impacts by providing important habitat. However, it remains poorly understood how the degree of urbanization and vegetation types within city parks (e.g., lawns, woodland) impact soil biodiversity. Here we investigated the impact of the degree of urbanization (urban vs. suburban) and vegetation type (lawn, shrub-lawn, tree-lawn and tree-shrub mixtures) on soil biodiversity in parkland systems...

Numerous studies have assessed the efficacy of environmentally based control methods to suppress populations of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say), but few of these estimated the cost of control. Analysis of relations between objects and comprehension of abstract concepts in the surgical video is important in AI-augmented surgery. Yet, building models that integrate our knowledge and understanding of surgery remains a challenging endeavor. In this paper, we propose a novel way to integrate conceptual knowledge into temporal analysis tasks using temporal concept graph networks. In the proposed networks, a knowledge graph is incorporated into the temporal video analysis of surgical notions, learning the meaning of concepts and relations as they apply to the data...

Urban greenspace (UGS) is recognized to confer significant societal benefits, but few studies explored the microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from different urban greenspace types. Here, we collected leaf and soil samples from forest, greenbelt, and parkland to analyze microbial community assembly and ARG profile. For phyllosphere fungal community, the α-diversity was higher in forest, compared to those in greenbelt and parkland. Moreover, urban greenspace types altered the community assembly...

In this cross-sectional study, we examined the extent to which features of the neighbourhood natural, built, and socio-economic environments were related to cognitive age in adults (N = 3418, Mage  = 61 years) in Australia. Machine learning estimated an individual's cognitive age from assessments of processing speed, verbal memory, premorbid intelligence. A 'cognitive age gap' was calculated by subtracting chronological age from predicted cognitive age and was used as a marker of cognitive age...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is universally recommended for adults ages 45-75 years. Noninvasive fecal occult blood tests are effective screening tests recommended by guidelines. However, empirical evidence to inform older adults' decisions about whether to continue screening is sparse, especially for individuals with prior screening. Mercury (Hg) is a widespread element and persistent pollutant, harmful to fish, wildlife, and humans in its organic, methylated form. The risk of Hg contamination is driven by factors that regulate Hg loading, methylation, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification. In remote locations, with infrequent access and limited data, understanding the relative importance of these factors can pose a challenge. Here, we assessed Hg concentrations in an apex predator fish species, lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), collected from 14 lakes spanning two National Parks in southwest Alaska, U...

Urban parkland (S1) was used to assess stem density, and understory vegetation (≤1.3 m) was assessed in native woodland (S2). Individual stem and continuous capture approaches were used, with stem diameter at breast height (DBH) estimated. Misalignment was present within point clouds; however, no significant differences in DBH were observed for stems captured at S1 with either approach (Kinect p = 0...

Secondary to difficult resuscitations using BF, we sought to review our data to identify factors associated with resuscitation requiring greater than predicted resuscitation with either formula, defined as 25% or more of predicted, hereafter referred to as over-resuscitation. PROBLEM DEFINITION: A substantial proportion of maternal morbidity and mortality occurs after birth. However, little is known about the optimal design of programs to improve outcomes and decrease disparities during this period. CONTEXT: Parkland Health is a tax-supported health system in Dallas that delivers more than 11,000 patients annually. A community needs assessment identified substantial health disparities in this community. The proportion of women in this region with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic hypertension (CHTN) during pregnancy is higher than surrounding regions, but access to care in the area is difficult because of the limited availability of ambulatory care...
