The present industry update covers the period 1-31 December 2017. Information was sourced primarily from scientific literature and various news websites, company press releases, regulatory and patent agencies. The most representative (not all) examples of research are herein described and they are mainly focused on metabolic diseases, cancer, blood pressure diseases, eyes diseases and, in some cases, in rare diseases. In this paper, there was a clear positive approval tendency for several companies where they offered novel therapeutic delivery candidates...

It is well known that the chromosomes are organized in the nucleus and this spatial arrangement of genome play a crucial role in gene regulation and genome stability. Different techniques have been developed and applied to uncover the intrinsic mechanism of genome architecture, especially the chromosome conformation capture (3C) and 3C-derived methods. 3C and 3C-derived techniques provide us approaches to perform high-throughput chromatin architecture assays at the genome scale. However, the advantage and disadvantage of current methodologies of C-technologies have not been discussed extensively...

In recent years, cardiogenetics is emerging as a major discipline for the study of many pathologies, with immediate clinical effects for patients who were previously managed by the cardiologist alone. Recent acquisitions have allowed significant improvements in terms of diagnostic characterization, prognostic stratification and guidance for treatment for both patients with genetic disease and their family members. At present, cardiogenetics has an important role for the clinical management of patients with cardiomyopathies and channelopathies...

PURPOSE: The Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) is a phacomatosis which include facial nevus flammeus, glaucoma, diffuse choroidal hemangioma, and leptomeningeal hemangiomatosis. External beam radiotherapy (EBRT) using photons was used to treat retinal detachment. We investigate the anatomical and functional results in a long-term basis. METHODS: Retrospective review of SWS patients treated by EBRT (20 Gy in 10 fractions) for an exudative diffuse choroidal hemangioma...

It is estimated that one third of the world's population have latent tuberculosis infection and that this is a significant reservoir for future tuberculosis cases. Most cases occur within two years following initial infection. The identification of individuals with latent tuberculosis infection is difficult due to the lack of an ideal diagnostic assay and incomplete understanding of latent infection. Currently, there are three tests: the oldest tuberculin skin test, T-SPOT.TB and the latest QuantiFERON-Plus for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection...

How do children and youth come to understand what it means to be a member of a particular race, gender, and other social groups? How do they come to hold beliefs about the groups that they do and do not belong to? Both news stories and fictional narratives that we are tuned into as a culture tell stories about what it means to be a member of a particular social group. In this review article, we relate the latest scientific knowledge on news and entertainment media representations of race, gender and other social categories and what they tell us about how these messages are taken in and processed by developing minds...
