INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the associations of digital ulcers (DUs) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: This retrospective study investigated the demographic characteristics, specific autoantibodies, organ involvement, and laboratory tests in patients with SSc from our hospital. RESULTS: This study enrolled 144 patients with SSc. The DU+ group consisted of 15 (10.4%) patients. Patients with SSc having DUs have longer disease duration, higher fibrinogen, higher fibrin degradation product, and lower cholesterol...

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound studies in inclusion body myositis (IBM) have reported a characteristic pattern of increased echointensity in the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) with relative sparing of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU). We examined the relationship between echointensity of the FDP and FCU muscles and hand strength or patient-reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS: A total of 15 patients with IBM were recruited. Ultrasound images of the FDP and FCU muscles were obtained by a point-of-care ultrasound and graded using the modified Heckmatt score...

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis leads to a cyst formation known to occur due to the Taenia solium parasite. Patients normally present with seeding and formation of the cysts in the central nervous system (CNS) as neurocysticercosis (NCC). Intramuscular cysts are rare presentations and are mostly incidental findings in NCC patients. We present a rare case of a rapidly progressing isolated cysticercosis of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscle leading to a pseudotumor and presenting with pseudo-Volkmanns contracture and a positive Volkmanns sign...

The enthesis, the specialized junction between tendon and bone, is a common site of injury. Although notoriously difficult to repair, advances in interfacial tissue engineering techniques are being developed for restorative function. Most notably are 3D in vitro co-culture models, built to recreate the complex heterogeneity of the native enthesis. While cell and matrix properties are often considered, there has been little attention given to native enthesis anatomical morphometrics and replicating these to enhance clinical relevance...

Despite the importance of the hemostatic properties of reconstituted freeze-dried plasma (FDP) for trauma resuscitation, few studies have been conducted to determine its post-reconstitution hemostatic stability. This study aimed to assess the short- (≤24 h) and long-term (≥168 h) hemostatic stabilities of Canadian and German freeze-dried plasma (CFDP and LyoPlas) after reconstitution and storage under different conditions. Post-reconstitution hemostatic profiles were determined using rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) and a Stago analyzer, as both are widely used as standard methods for assessing the quality of plasma...

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism is a major health problem. After thrombus formation, its resolution is essential to re-establish blood flow, which is crucially mediated by infiltrating neutrophils and monocytes in concert with activated platelets and endothelial cells. Thus, we aimed to modulate leukocyte function during thrombus resolution post-thrombus formation by blocking P-selectin/CD62P-mediated cell interactions. METHODS: Thrombosis was induced by inferior vena cava stenosis through ligation in mice...

We modify a three-dimensional multiscale model of fibrinolysis to study the effect of plasmin-mediated degradation of fibrin on tPA diffusion and fibrinolysis. We propose that tPA is released from a fibrin fiber by simple kinetic unbinding, as well as by "forced unbinding" which occurs when plasmin degrades fibrin to which tPA is bound. We show that if tPA is bound to a small-enough piece of fibrin that it can diffuse into the clot, then plasmin can increase the effective diffusion of tPA. If tPA is bound to larger fibrin degradation products (FDPs) that can only diffuse along the clot, then plasmin can decrease the effective diffusion of tPA...

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the behavior of coagulation parameters in dogs with multicentric lymphoma compared with diseased dogs without lymphoma, to separately evaluate the effect of immunophenotype (B lymphoma versus T lymphoma) on the variables of interest as well as the effect of disease stage (stage II to IV versus stage V)...

BACKGROUND: Thyroidectomy is commonly performed for benign or malignant thyroid tumors, often resulting in hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine (LT4) supplementation is crucial to maintain hormone levels within the normal range and suppress TSH for cancer control. However, determining the optimal dosage remains challenging, leading to uncertain outcomes and potential side effects. METHODS: We analyzed clinical examination data from 510 total thyroidectomy patients, including demographic information, blood tests, and thyroid function...

This article reviews and highlights complications of flexor tendon repairs. Although the outcomes of flexor tendon repairs have improved over the years, fair or poor functional outcomes are seen, especially in patients whose trauma involves multiple structures of the hand and in zone 5 with multiple tendon lacerations. Rupture of the flexor tendon after repair is no longer a major problem if current repair principles are carefully adhered to. Different degrees of adhesion formations and interphalangeal (IP) joint stiffness still occur in a few patients...

Blood clots, which are composed of blood cells and a stabilizing mesh of fibrin fibers, are critical in cessation of bleeding following injury. However, their action is transient and after performing their physiological function they must be resolved through a process known as fibrinolysis. Internal fibrinolysis is the degradation of fibrin by the endogenous or innate presence of lytic enzymes in the bloodstream; under healthy conditions, this process regulates hemostasis and prevents bleeding or clotting. Fibrin-bound tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) converts nearby plasminogen into active plasmin, which is bound to the fibrin network, breaking it down into fibrin degradation products and releasing the entrapped blood cells...

Focus is on hemorrhage control and volume resuscitation with blood products, with adoption of Remote Damage Control Resuscitation (RDCR) guidelines.
