BACKGROUND: Warts are benign proliferations of skin and mucosa caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Plane warts are caused by HPV types 3, 10, 28, and 41, occurring mostly in children and young adults. Among the treatment modalities, topical application of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is age old. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) has a keratolytic effect on virus-infected cells. It is less irritating, less painful, less scar forming, and can be safely used in children too. Hence, it could be a better topical agent in the treatment of plane warts...

BACKGROUND: Four patients from three Norwegian families presented with a common skin phenotype of warts, molluscum contagiosum, and dermatitis since early childhood, and various other immunological features. Warts are a common manifestation of human papilloma virus (HPV), but when they are overwhelming, disseminated and/or persistent, and presenting together with other immunological features, a primary immunodeficiency disease (PIDD) may be suspected. METHODS AND RESULTS: The four patients were exome sequenced as part of a larger study for detecting genetic causes of primary immunodeficiencies...

Importance: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections cause anogenital cancers and warts. The 9-valent HPV vaccine provides protection against 7 high-risk types of HPV responsible for 90% of cervical cancers and 2 other HPV types accounting for 90% of genital warts. Objective: To determine whether HPV type-specific antibody responses would be noninferior among girls and boys aged 9 to 14 years after receiving 2 doses of the 9-valent HPV vaccine compared with adolescent girls and young women aged 16 to 26 years receiving 3 doses...

Mycobacterium W (Mw) vaccine has been found to be effective in the treatment of leprosy and warts. Despite increasing use of Mw immunotherapy, data on its safety is limited. We report a series of eight patients who developed persisting injection site granulomatous reaction following Mw immunotherapy and were successfully treated with minocycline. Eight patients with persistent nodular swelling at the site of Mw injections were identified. Seven of them had received Mw immunotherapy for cutaneous warts and one for verrucous epidermal nevus...

Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing catalytic polypeptide (APOBEC) 3 proteins have been identified as potent viral DNA mutators and have broad antiviral activity. In this study, we demonstrated APOBEC3A (A3A) and A3G expression levels were significantly upregulated in HPV infected cell lines and tissues. Heat treatment resulted in elevated expression of A3A and A3G in a temperature-dependent manner in HPV infected cells. Correspondingly, 44 ºC heating treated HPV infected cells showed accumulated G-to-A or C-to-T mutation in HPVE2 gene...

BACKGROUND: Cowden disease is a multisystemic cancer predisposition disorder, inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Cutaneous and visceral lesions are either malignant tumours or are believed to represent hamartomatous growths. Mucocutaneous lesions are present on almost 100% of affected individuals. Nonetheless, some authors consider that the mucocutaneous manifestations of Cowden disease are, in reality, viral warts at distinct steps of evolution. There are only a few studies regarding the oral manifestations of Cowden disease...

Infections with sexually transmitted high-risk Human Papillomavirus (hrHPV), of which there are at least 15 genotypes, are responsible for a tremendous disease burden by causing cervical, and subsets of other ano-genital and oro-pharyngeal carcinomas, together representing 5% of all cancer cases worldwide. HPV subunit vaccines consisting of virus-like particles (VLP) self-assembled from major capsid protein L1 plus adjuvant have been licensed. Prophylactic vaccinations with the 2-valent (HPV16/18), 4-valent (HPV6/11/16/18), or 9-valent (HPV6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58) vaccine induce high-titer neutralizing antibodies restricted to the vaccine types that cause up to 90% of cervical carcinomas, a subset of other ano-genital and oro-pharyngeal cancers and 90% of benign ano-genital warts (condylomata)...

PURPOSE: Bleomycin-coated microneedles were devised for delivery of bleomycin into the sub-epidermal skin layer for the treatment of warts in order to provide patient convenience and reduce patient pain and fear. METHOD: Poly-lactic-acid (L-PLA) microneedles were fabricated by a molding process and then the tips were partially coated using a dip-coating method based on a microstructure well. The mechanical strength of the pre-coated polymer microneedles was observed by inserting them in porcine foot and back skin...

SMAD ubiquitination regulatory factors 1 and 2 (Smurf1/2) are members of the HECT domain E3 ligase family which play crucial roles in the regulation of cell cycle progression, planar cell polarity, cancer metastasis and cell apoptosis. We recently showed that the Drosophila homolog dSmurf controls the stability of Warts kinase to regulate the Hippo pathway. In the current study, we found that the F-box protein Slimb controls dSmurf protein level to regulate the Hippo pathway. Slimb physically associates with dSmurf as revealed by co-immunoprecipitation assay in S2 cells...

In Brazil, the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), commonly disperses from soybeans to cotton fields. The establishment of an economic treatment threshold for this pest on cotton crops is required. Infestation levels of adults of E. heros were evaluated on cotton plants at preflowering, early flowering, boll filling, and full maturity by assessing external and internal symptoms of injury on bolls, seed cotton/lint production, and fiber quality parameters. A completely randomized experiment was designed to infest cotton plants in a greenhouse with 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 bugs/plant, except at the full-maturity stage in which only infestation with 8 bugs/plant and uninfested plants were evaluated...

Treatment of anogenital warts was successful in an 11-year-old child with sinecatechins ointment 10%. After application for 10 weeks, the warts completely disappeared, without recurrence during a 12-week follow-up. Treatment was well tolerated, without notable side effects. Sinecatechins appear to be a reasonable treatment for anogenital warts in children who have difficulty tolerating painful destructive therapy.

Cervical cancer is one of the most prevalent gynecological malignancies worldwide. Romania has the highest incidence of this type of cancer in Europe. A successful prevention strategy has to consider the primary prevention measures (including health education on human papilloma virus (HPV) infection but also vaccination). The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes of Romanian women about HPV and HPV vaccine. We conducted a cross-sectional study survey of 454 women using an anonymously completed questionnaire covering the awareness and knowledge of HPV infection and attitudes to vaccination...

Synchytrium endobioticum is an obligate biotrophic fungus that causes wart diseases in potato. Like other species of the Chytridiomycetes it does not form mycelia and its zoospores are small, approximately 3µm in diameter, which complicate the detection of early stages of infection. Furthermore, potato wart disease is difficult to control as belowground organs are infected and resting spores of the fungus are extremely durable. S. endobioticum is thus classified as a quarantine organism. More than 40 S. endobioticum pathotypes have been reported, of which pathotypes 1(D1), 2(G1), 6(O1), 8(F1) and 18(T1) are the most important in Germany...
