Intussusception in adults is less frequent than in children, and it is less commonly seen in the colon than in the intestines. This may be explained by the fixation of the colon to the retroperitoneum. We herein describe a case of sigmoid colon intussusception caused by a sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. An 81-year-old man presented with abdominal pain and signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction. CT revealed a "target sign" with a mass in the sigmoid colon. We diagnosed the patient with colonic obstruction secondary to intussusception of the sigmoid colon and performed an emergency transverse colostomy...

Regorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor approved for treatment of patients with metastatic Colo-Rectal Cancer (mCRC) and Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) progression after the administration of other tyrosine-kinase inhibitors such as imatinib and sunitinib. Only a handful of severe side effects such as intestinal perforations and fistulas have been described in the literature in patients undergoing multikinase inhibitor treatment. We report a case of a patient with peritoneal mCRC who experienced an intestinal perforation during the administration of Regorafenib and review the literature...

BACKGROUND: The landscape of robotic surgery is evolving with the emergence of new platforms. However, reports on their applicability in different surgical fields are still limited and come from teams with robotics experience. This study aims to describe the training process for colorectal surgery with the Hugo™ RAS system of a robotics-inexperienced surgical team and present the initial patient series. METHODS: The training process is depicted, and data from the first 10 consecutive patients operated on for colorectal conditions with the Hugo™ RAS system by a surgical team with no prior experience in robotic surgery were prospectively recorded and analysed...

Epidermoid cysts are infrequent lesions occupying the intracranial space, comprising approximately 1-2% of all intracranial tumors. Brainstem epidermoids are exceptionally uncommon in children; up until now, only a few scattered case reports have been documented in the literature regarding this unique location. These cysts commonly arise from the inclusion of ectodermal elements during neural tube closure. Complete excision of these cysts is challenging due to their close proximity and adherence to the brainstem, which makes it difficult to achieve...

Schwannoma is a type of peripheral nerve sheath tumor that is often found in the head and neck. Schwannomas in the digestive system, particularly the colon and rectum, are exceptionally rare, and they are mostly non-malignant and asymptomatic although sometimes patients can present with symptoms similar to those observed in patients with other gastrointestinal tumors like abdominal pain, fullness, nausea, vomiting, and change in bowel habits. For diagnosis and treatment, surgical resection along with biopsy is the gold standard...

Total pelvic exenteration (TPE) is a highly invasive surgery associated with high rates of perioperative morbidity and mortality and is commonly performed for several types of locally advanced or recurrent pelvic cancers. It involves multivisceral resection, including the rectum, sigmoid colon, bladder, prostate, uterus, vagina, or ovaries, and urologists normally perform radical cystectomy or radical prostatectomy and urinary diversion in collaboration with colorectal surgeons and gynecologists. In the urological field, robot-assisted surgeries have been widely performed as one of the main minimally invasive procedures because of their superior perioperative or oncological outcomes compared to open or laparoscopic surgeries...

In recent years, the Rutherford Morison incision has become synonymous with renal transplant surgery. However, this incision was originally intended for access to the sigmoid colon and pelvis, particularly in the case of a midline previously scarred from operation. We present a case of a middle-aged female with a caecal tumour, requiring resection. Upon examination, this patient was found to have large concomitant diastasis of the recti. A right-sided Rutherford Morison incision was utilized in performing a right hemicolectomy...

Congenital sigmoid colon stenosis is a rare entity that can mimic Hirschsprung disease. Presentation of congenital colon stenosis is usually within first few weeks of life. Our case presented with features of distal bowel obstruction at 2 years of age with the history of chronic constipation and progressive abdominal distention from first week of life and bilious vomiting for the last 1 week. Clinical diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease was made. Contrast enhanced CT abdomen showed bowel obstruction with transition point at the level of proximal sigmoid colon...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Colorectal cancer ranks as one of the most common cancer globally. About half of the patients experience a disease recurrence in the form of сolorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) within the first 5 years of the course of the disease. However, there are rare cases of delayed onset of liver metastasis, that occur after cessation of standard follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman was referred to our institute with a metastatic liver mass adjacent to the liver hilum...

BACKGROUND: There is no criterion to guide and evaluate the anastomosis of laparoscopic low anterior resection (LAR). We developed a new technique for precise anastomosis. This study endeavored to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this new technology. METHODS: Patients with mid-low rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic LAR in our department were enrolled retrospectively between January 1, 2021 and July 1, 2023. During the LAR, the distance between the sacral promontory and the rectal stump was measured and used to determine the length of the sigmoid colon, which was preserved for anastomose...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer ranks third in global cancer-related mortality, often due to metastases to liver and lungs. Ovarian metastases are less common, accounting for 3.6% to 7.4% of cases. In contrast, mature ovarian teratomas are frequently benign. Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare phenomenon, with a limited number of documented cases. Three cases of mature ovarian teratomas metastasizing from different cancers have been reported. This report focuses on a case of tumor-to-tumor metastasis from sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma to a mature ovarian teratoma...

A male patient in his 80s underwent colonic stenting for obstructive sigmoid colon cancer with multiple liver metastases. With systemic chemotherapy for approximately 1 year, the liver metastasis disappeared, so laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy was performed for the primary lesion. No recurrence was observed for a while, although CT revealed liver metastasis in the liver S4, and radiofrequency ablation was performed. Radiation therapy was performed for the liver metastasis of liver S2 that subsequently appeared...
