Icariin has previously been demonstrated to attenuate hyperglycemia‑induced renal injury, however the renoprotective effects of icariin in a rat model of pregnancy‑induced hypertension (PIH) remain to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of icariin on PIH‑induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and proteinuria. Following 18 days of icariin treatment between day 1 and day 18 of gestation, which was combined with NG‑nitro‑L‑arginine methyl ester (L‑NAME) treatment between day 12 and day 18 of gestation to induce PIH, the 24 h urine protein level, blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine were measured by using the Coomassie Brilliant Blue method, a commercial enzymatic kit and the picric acid method, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Optimising exercise-induced physiological responses without increasing the risk of negative exaggerated responses is an important aspect of exercise prescription for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, knowledge of acute responses, including exaggerated responses, of different training modalities is limited. AIM: To compare acute physiological responses of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in T2DM...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) may appear during the natural clinical course of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). It is regarded as a complication of HCM and is a marker of advanced disease. AF is more likely to occur in untreated, obstructive HCM. Unfortunately, this represents a turning point that puts patients at increased risk of further disability, stroke and death. The presence of obstruction is an indication to proceed with septal myectomy to improve or resolve symptoms by ameliorating diastolic dysfunction...

Iron deficiency (FeD), with or without anemia, in adults with heart failure (HF) is associated with poor outcomes, which can be improved with replacement therapy. A similar therapeutic opportunity may exist for children; however, iron laboratory measurements and FeD have not been described in pediatric patients with HF. A single-center, retrospective study was conducted on 28 patients <21 years old with a diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy and HF who had iron laboratories (serum iron, iron saturation, and ferritin) performed...

PURPOSE: As growing numbers of long-term cancer survivors faced with the cardiac side effects by anthracycline treatment, it is necessary to explore the optimal monitoring method for the early detection of cardiac toxicity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 82 consecutive patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with chemotherapy. Echocardiographic Doppler imaging-derived Tei index and mitral annular peak systolic velocity (Sm) measured by tissue Doppler imaging TDI, serum high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) levels, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) by multigated radionuclide angiography (MUGA) were obtained before, after 2-4, and after 6-8 chemotherapy cycles...

Schizophrenia is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which has been linked to increased vascular risk and rates of cardiovascular disease. Levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) have been related to aging and neurodegeneration, but their role in schizophrenia remains uncertain. Using a cross-sectional, case-control design, this study included 99 outpatients with schizophrenia and 99 healthy comparison subjects (HCs)...

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing biventricular (BiV) cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and left ventricular (LV) pacing alone have yielded conflicting results. We recently reported the results of the Greater Evaluation of Resynchronization Therapy for Heart Failure (GREATER-EARTH) trial demonstrating similar clinical benefits of BiV and LV-CRT on exercise tolerance. We report the prespecified secondary outcomes of the GREATER-EARTH trial, comparing the impact of BiV vs LV-CRT on structural and biochemical cardiac remodelling...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent clinical trials and expert consensus guidelines have typically focused on the issue of systolic blood pressure (SBP) targets for reducing vascular risk. However, little is known about the relationship of the diastolic BP (DBP) level with vascular outcomes after a stroke. METHODS: A multicenter trial dataset involving 3680 recent (<4 months) non-cardioembolic stroke patients followed for 2 years was analyzed. Subjects were categorized per mean DBP level (mmHg) during follow-up: low-normal (<70), normal (70 to <80), high-normal (80-89) and high (≥90)...

Despite the availability of many antihypertensive drug classes, half of patients with hypertension have uncontrolled blood pressure (BP). The authors sought to assess the effect of age on BP response in European American and African American patients with hypertension. Clinic BP from the PEAR2 (Pharmacogenomics Evaluation of Antihypertensive Responses 2) study was used to estimate BP responses from baseline following sequential treatment with metoprolol 100 mg twice daily and chlorthalidone 25 mg daily for 8 to 9 weeks each, with a minimum 4-week washout between treatments...

L-citrulline (Cit) increases arginine (Arg), the primary substrate for nitric oxide biosynthesis. We tested the hypothesis that muscle blood flow during exercise would be enhanced by Cit supplementation in older adults. Femoral artery blood flow was measured during calf exercise using Doppler ultrasound, and vascular conductance (FVC) was calculated in 25 older adults (13W, 12M) before and after 14 days of Cit (6 g day(-1) ) and placebo (maltodextrin) in a randomized, double-blind, crossover study. Plasma [Arg] and resting blood pressure were also measured before and after each condition...

Human biologists have been examining arterial blood pressure since they began studying the effects of the environment and culture on the health of diverse populations. The Korotkoff auscultatory technique with a trained observer and aneroid sphygmomanometer is the method of choice for blood pressure measurement in many bioanthropological field contexts. Korotkoff sounds (the first and fifth phases) are the preferred determinants of systolic and diastolic pressure, even in infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly...

Omecamtiv mecarbil (OM) is a myosin activator agent developed for the treatment of heart failure. OM was reported to increase left ventricular ejection fraction and systolic ejection time, but little is known about the effect of heart rate on the action of OM. The present study, therefore, was designed to investigate the effects of OM on unloaded cell shortening and intracellular Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)]i) transients as a function of the pacing frequency. Isolated cardiomyocytes were stimulated at various frequencies under steady-state conditions...

BACKGROUND: Heart failure is one of the most important complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, few studies comprehensively investigated left ventricular (LV) structure and function in relation to 2 key CKD measures, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR). METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 4175 ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) participants (aged 66-90 years during 2011-2013), we quantified the association of eGFR and ACR with echocardiogram parameters of LV mass, size, systolic function, and diastolic function...
