BACKGROUND: Explanation models for the effectiveness of homeopathy are not supported by natural sciences and the aggregated evidence from clinical trials is unconvincing. From this standpoint, placebo effects seem the most obvious explanation for the therapeutic effects experienced in homeopathy. Still, many physicians continue to prescribe homeopathic treatments. OBJECTIVES: Whether physicians who prescribe homeopathic treatments aim to achieve placebo effects or actually believe in specific effects is poorly understood...

PURPOSE: Recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL) are considered a pathological condition associated with heterogeneous laboratory and clinical findings, and are also linked to subfertility. We attempt to rank parameters derived from past history and diagnostic results with regard to the prognosis. METHODS: Observational trial on 719 consecutive couples who were referred to a tertiary immunological care centre (2006-2014) after three or more primary miscarriages. Information on past obstetric history and diagnostic procedures at baseline were correlated with cumulative pregnancy and delivery rates using Kaplan-Meier estimation, logistic regression and multivariate analysis...

We evaluated the risk and outcome of bloodstream infections (BSIs) following surgery. BSIs were identified in Helsinki University Hospital during 2009-2014 as part of the national surveillance. Of 711 BSIs identified, 51% were secondary and 49% primary. The rate was highest after cardiovascular surgery (8.7/1000 procedures) and lowest after gynaecologic (1.0/1000). Surgical site infection was the most common source of secondary BSIs (34%) and 45% of primary BSIs were central line-associated. The 28-day case fatality ranged from 0% in gynaecology/obstetrics to 21% in cardiovascular surgery...

This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of empowerment program on increasing self-esteem, learned resourcefulness, and coping ways in women exposed to domestic violence. This experimental study was conducted between October 2012 and June 2014 in the obstetrics and gynaecology departments of the Giresun Maternity Hospital, and at the Family Counseling Center (FCC) in Turkey. Sixty women who agreed to participate in the study were randomly assigned into two groups. Data were collected by the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI), The Rosenbaum's Learned Resourcefulness Scale (RLRS), and the Ways of Coping Inventory (WCI)...

BACKGROUND: Babies with a birth weight of less than 2500 grams, irrespective of the period of their gestation are termed as Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies. Despite consistent efforts to improve the quality of maternal and child health, more than twenty million low birth-weight (LBW) babies are born every year throughout the world. Though, the health situation of Nepal has improved substantially over the years, the low birth-weight (LBW) rate is still high. The objective of this study was to assess the proportion of low birth weight and identify the associated factors for low birth weight in a live born infant among the institutionally delivered newborns...

BACKGROUND: Pelvic ultrasound is a critical diagnostic imaging tool in obstetrics and gynaecology. Training opportunities in transvaginal ultrasound have not kept pace with the demand among learners because of the increased complexity of modern ultrasound technology and duty-hour restrictions. Ultrasound simulation training has the potential to overcome this gap. Training opportunities in transvaginal ultrasound have not kept pace with the demand OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine the usefulness, applicability and attitudes toward pelvic ultrasound simulation training among residents, sonographers and practising doctors...

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 585.000 women die every year in the world as a result of complications related to pregnancy, delivery, postpartum period and abortion (the latter contributing to 13% of maternal deaths). Ectopic pregnancies are responsible for 10% of maternal mortality in the first quarter of pregnancy. Maternal mortality rate is high in Cameroon, estimated at 782 per 100.000 live births according to EDS-MICS 2011. AS the role of these two conditions in maternal mortality is little documented in our country, we conducted this study to assess the role of abortions and ectopic pregnancies in maternal mortality rate in Cameroon...

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a previous Cochrane review published in Issue 1, 2010 and updated in Issue 9, 2015. The role of lymphadenectomy in surgical management of endometrial cancer remains controversial. Lymph node metastases can be found in approximately 10% of women who before surgery are thought to have cancer confined to the womb. Removal of all pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy) at initial surgery has been widely advocated, and pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy remains part of the FIGO (International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics) staging system for endometrial cancer...

The present study aimed to identify differences in protein expression in cases of endometrioid endometrial cancer (EEC) with and without coexisting adenomyosis uteri (AM), and to evaluate the histopathological and prognostic distinctions. The total cohort included 22 patients in Group A (patients with concomitant AM and EEC) and 35 patients in Group B (patients affected only by EEC). Evaluation of the following factors was performed: Tumour grade, International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, survival, and expression of estrogen receptor β (ERβ), glycodelin and inhibin βB...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the relationships of HPIP expression status with the clinicopathological variables and survival outcomes of patients with cervical cancer (CC). METHODS: We compared the HPIP expression of 119 samples from CC tissues, 20 from cervical intraepithelial tissues, and 20 from normal cervical tissues by using immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: It was observed that the ratio of elevated HPIP expression was higher in CC tissues than in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (P=0...
