Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) represents a distinct imaging approach that may be used to evaluate a wide spectrum of venous pathology. Despite duplex ultrasound and computed tomography venography representing the dominant imaging modalities in investigating suspected venous disease, MRV is increasingly used due to its lack of ionizing radiation, unique ability to be performed without administration of intravenous contrast, and recent technical improvements resulting in improved sensitivity, image quality, and faster acquisition times...

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of a periprocedural decision on the administration of intravenous contrast media in MRI for endometriosis and to evaluate the frequency and reasons of contrast administrations, the corresponding MRI diagnoses, and outcome. METHODS: In this retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional single-center study all patients were included, who received a pelvic MRI for evaluation of endometriosis between April 2021 and February 2023. Frequency and reasons of optional intravenous administration of contrast media, corresponding MRI diagnoses and clinical outcome data were noted after re-review of all images, review of radiology reports and review of patients' medical records...

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) remains a challenge given the lack of universally accepted criteria. Although venography (VG) is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of PCS, non-invasive techniques like transvaginal ultrasonography (TVU) appear to be a valid alternative. The aim of this study was to design a predictive model for the venographic diagnostic of PCS using the parameters identified by TVU in patients with clinical suspicion of PCS, in order to individually assess the need to perform an invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technique such as VG...

Long COVID disproportionately affects premenopausal women, but relatively few studies have examined Long COVID's impact on female reproductive health. We conduct a review of the literature documenting the female reproductive health impacts of Long COVID which may include disruptions to the menstrual cycle, gonadal function, ovarian sufficiency, menopause, and fertility, as well as symptom exacerbation around menstruation. Given limited research, we also review the reproductive health impacts of overlapping and associated illnesses including myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and endometriosis, as these illnesses may help to elucidate reproductive health conditions in Long COVID...

Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) in females and varicoceles in males may be regarded as closely related conditions since the main pathophysiological cause for both processes is pelvic venous insufficiency. Varicoceles are more prevalent amongst sub-fertile males, with an approximate incidence of 15% in the general male population. PCS is commonly diagnosed amongst premenopausal multiparous women, representing one of the leading causes of chronic pelvic pain. Both conditions appear to be predominantly left-sided and are associated with oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cascades with subsequent effects on fertility...

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) commonly occurs in the right liver lobe, causing the typical symptoms of fever and right upper quadrant pain. Less than one-third of cases occur in the left lobe. We describe an unusual presentation of a giant left-sided PLA that was compressing the stomach and surrounding venous vasculature, causing the respective symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux and vaginal discharge from secondary pelvic congestion syndrome. CT revealed a solitary 14 cm×10 cm×10 cm multiloculated lesion, replacing most of the left liver lobe...

Pelvic venous disorders (PeVD), previously known by various imprecise terms including pelvic congestion syndrome, have historically been underdiagnosed as a cause of chronic pelvic pain (CPP), a significant health problem associated with reduced quality of life. However, progress in the field has helped to provide heightened clarity with respect to definitions relating to PeVD, and evolution in algorithms for PeVD workup and treatment has been accompanied by new insights into the causes of a pelvic venous reservoir and associated symptoms...

Pelvic venous congestion syndrome (PVCS) is a common, but underdiagnosed, cause of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in women.PVCS occurs usually, but not exclusively, in multiparous women. It is characterized by chronic pelvic pain of more than six months duration with no evidence of inflammatory disease. The patients present to general practitioners, gynaecologists, vascular specialists, pain specialists, gastroenterologists and psychiatrists. Pain of variable intensity occurs at any time but is worse in the pre-menstrual period, and is exacerbated by walking, standing, and fatigue...

Congenital portosystemic shunt (CPS) is a developmental anomaly of the portal vein system. The disease can cause blood from the portal vein to flow into the vena cava, resulting in various atypical clinical manifestations. Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) caused by CPS is particularly rare. A young woman with PCS had an abnormal communicating branch of the left ovarian vein (OV). Her left OV drained normally into the left renal vein, and at the same time communicated with the portal vein, forming an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt...

Abdominopelvic varicosities are a rare occurrence after traumatic venous injuries. Several disorders exist that present with abdominopelvic varicosities such as May-Thurner syndrome, pelvic congestion syndrome, and nutcracker syndrome; however, it has rarely been described after trauma.1 We present a case in 70-year-old male, who in 1974 sustained a penetrating injury from fragments secondary to mortar explosion, requiring exploratory laparotomy. He presented to the hospital with abdominopelvic varicosities that began 20 years after the incident and was asymptomatic at initial presentation...

Acute pelvic pain due to venous thrombosis can be encountered in the context of pelvic congestion syndrome. Some vascular anomalies such as nutcracker syndrome or May-Thurner syndrome may cause left ovarian vein or left iliofemoral vein thrombosis. Smaller parametrial or paravaginal vein thrombi have rarely been reported as aetiologies of acute pelvic pain. We present a case of spontaneous paravaginal venous plexus thrombosis presenting as acute lower pelvic pain in which thrombophilia was diagnosed. Small vein thrombosis or an unusual location of thrombus should prompt vascular studies and a thrombophilia work-up...

Varicose veins are commonly due to saphenous vein reflux, but they can manifest more complex venous pathologies. A 45-year-old woman presented with painful leg varicosities and pelvic pain. Duplex examination showed bilateral superficial venous reflux, and, on further interrogation, cross-sectional imaging demonstrated enlarged ovarian veins and nonthrombotic iliac vein compression. Ovarian vein embolization followed by iliac vein stenting and bilateral lower extremity venous ablations and sclerotherapy was performed...

Pelvic venous disorders (PeVD), sometimes referred to as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS), widely impact affected patients-mainly young women's quality of life, causing puzzling, uncomfortable symptoms sometimes requiring months or years to get an explanation, while simply remaining undiagnosed in other cases. Because pelvic pain is a non-specific symptom, an appropriate diagnosis requires a careful patient workup, including a correlation between history and non-invasive imaging. Invasive imaging is frequently required to confirm the diagnosis and plan treatment...

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a prevalent condition in middle-aged women that represents a heavy social impact on the quality of life of those females. Treatment of pelvic congestion syndrome is a complex and controversial issue, but treatment can be one of 3 lines: medical therapy, endovascular treatment, and surgical intervention. The endovascular line was first introduced in 1993 and has been popular over other lines of treatment methods. This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary university hospital over 24 months, from March 2019 to March 2021...

Pelvic venous disorders (PeVDs) have replaced the concept of pelvic congestion syndrome encompassing venous origin chronic pelvic pain (VO-CPP) in women. The evaluation of women with VO-CPP includes the assessment for other causes of pelvic pain as well as imaging evaluation for pelvic varicosities measuring greater than 5 mm diameter, ovarian vein diameter, and flow direction, as well as iliac vein diameter and signs of compression. Proper identification of these patients can lead to high degrees of success eliminating chronic pelvic pain following ovarian vein embolization and/or iliac vein stenting...

Venous vascular diseases are an important clinical entity estimated to affect several million people worldwide. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common venous disease with a population variable prevalence of 122 to 160 persons per 100,000 per year, whereas pulmonary embolism (PE) affects up to 60 to 70 per 100 000 and carries much higher mortality. Chronic venous diseases, which cause symptoms like leg swelling, heaviness, pain, and discomfort, are most prevalent in the elderly and significantly impact their quality of life...
