The role of frataxin (FXN) has been studied extensively in Friedreich ataxia patients, however, the molecular bases underlining the sex steroid-dependent gene expression profiles of FXN in adult tissues are unknown. I describe the molecular characterization of hamster FXN by examining the sexually dimorphic expression and its regulation by sex steroids. Sequence analysis of FXN cDNA showed 630 bp-long ORF encoding 209 amino acids. qPCR analysis revealed that FXN is detected in a wide range of tissues, with the highest expression in the heart, liver, and epididymis, and the weakest expression in the lung, spleen, uterus, and gut...

Obesity is a complex disease characterized by excessive fat accumulation which is caused by genetic, environmental and other factors. In recent years, there has been an increase in the morbidity, disability rate, and mortality due to obesity, making it great threat to people's health and lives, and increasing public health care expenses. Evidence from previous studies show that weight loss can significantly reduce the risk of obesity-related complications and chronic diseases. Diet control, moderate exercise, behavior modification programs, bariatric surgery and prescription drug treatment are the major interventions used to help people lose weight...

Microplastics are small plastic particles that come from the degradation of plastics, ubiquitous in nature and therefore affect both wildlife and humans. They have been detected in many marine species, but also in drinking water and in numerous foods, such as salt, honey and marine organisms. Exposure to microplastics can also occur through inhaled air. Data from animal studies have shown that once absorbed, plastic micro- and nanoparticles can distribute to the liver, spleen, heart, lungs, thymus, reproductive organs, kidneys and even the brain (crosses the blood-brain barrier)...

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing around the world. Although Muslims with a physical illness are exempted from fasting during the month of Ramadan, a great number still choose to fast, often without medical consultations. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the impact of observing Ramadan fasting (RF) on glycaemic control in patients with T2D. METHODS: The Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCOhost, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, ProQuest Central and Europe PubMed Central (Medline) databases were searched for relevant studies published between January 2000 and December 2021...

BACKGROUND: Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), also known as Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS), is a severe adverse drug reaction. Propylthiouracil, a member of thiouracils group, is widely used in medical treatment of hyperthyroidism. Propylthiouracil is associated with multiple adverse effects such as rash, agranulocytosis hepatitis and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, but rarely triggers DRESS/DiHS syndrome. Here, we describe a severe case of propylthiouracil-induced DRESS/DiHS syndrome...

Fabry disease (FD) is an inherited disease caused by deficient α-galactosidase A activity that is characterized by the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) and globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3). Although plasma lyso-Gb3 is a sensitive biomarker of FD, the correlation between its concentration and clinical symptoms remains unclear. To clarify the influence of plasma Gb3 and lyso-Gb3 in a symptomatic Gla tm Tg(CAG-A4GALT) FD mouse model, the total contents of Gb3, lyso-Gb3 and their analogs in various organs and plasma were determined in mice with early- (5-week-old) and late-stage (20-week-old) renal dysfunction...

BACKGROUND: In recent years, immunotherapy has gradually become the first or second-line drug for non-small cell lung cancer. However, the side effects associated with immunotherapy should not be underestimated. Toxic reactions are commonly seen in the skin, endocrine, and liver, and rarely in the heart and nerves. These effects are often life-threatening when they occur. In this paper, we present a case of ICIs-associated myocarditis in advanced lung adenocarcinoma with unappreciated initial cardiac enzyme elevation in a driver gene negative...

BACKGROUND: Periampullary diverticula (PAD) often detected during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and ERCP remains the primary approach to treating bile duct stones, and papilla cannulation plays a critical role in the success of ERCP. PAD can reduce the cannulation success rate. Needle knife precut greatly promoted the clinical application of precut incision. However, this approach also increases the risk of various adverse events. The present study aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes of pancreatic duct guide wire-assisted needle knife precut and conventional needle knife precut for PAD with difficult cannulation...

The automatism of cardiac pacemaker cells, which is tuned, is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and multiple endocrine and paracrine factors, including cardiovascular peptides. The cardiovascular peptides (CPs) form a group of essential paracrine factors affecting the function of the heart and vessels. They may also be produced in other organs and penetrate to the heart via systemic circulation. The present review draws attention to the role of vasopressin (AVP) and some other cardiovascular peptides (angiotensins, oxytocin, cytokines) in the regulation of the cardiovascular system in health and cardiovascular diseases, especially in post-infarct heart failure, hypertension and cerebrovascular strokes...

Renin-angiotensin system (RAS), as a critical system for controlling body fluid and hemostasis, contains peptides and receptors, including angiotensin 1-7 (Ang 1-7) and Mas receptor (MasR). Ang 1-7 implements its function via MasR. Ang II is another peptide in RAS that performs its actions via two Ang II type 1 and 2 receptors (AT1R and AT2R). The functions of AT2R and MasR are very similar, and both have a vasodilation effect, while AT1R has a vasoconstriction role. MasR affects many mechanisms in the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidney, lung, endocrine, reproductive, skeletal muscle, and liver and probably acts like a paracrine hormone in these organs...

The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is a freshwater crocodilian endemic to China. So far, the endocrine regulation of feeding and growth in Chinese alligator is poorly understood. In this study, the molecular structure and tissue expression profiles of ghrelin and its receptor GHSR in the Chinese alligator were characterized for the first time. The full-length cDNA of ghrelin was 1770 bp, including a 37 bp 5 '-UTR (untranslated region), a 435 bp ORF (open reading frame) and a 1298 bp 3 '-UTR. The ORF encodes a ghrelin precursor, which consists of 145 amino acid residues, including a signal peptide with 52 amino acid residues at the N-terminus, a mature peptide with 28 amino acid residues, and a possibly obestain at the C-terminus...

Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) are a family of transcription factors characterised by zinc-finger structures at the C-terminal. They play the key roles in cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration, as well as in embryonic development. They have been widely expressed in multiple systems in vivo, and their dysregulation is closely associated with a variety of human diseases. Glycolipid metabolism is a complex physiological process which can be regulated at the transcriptional level. Glycolipid metabolic diseases, such as obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes, and their complications, are a serious threat to human health...
