Petroleum hydrocarbon pollution in marine waters has been an extremely significant environmental and health issue worldwide. This study aims at constructing an efficient indigenous bacterial consortium to biodegrade Tapis Light Crude Petroleum Oil (TLCO). The local agro-industrial wastewater of palm oil mill effluent final discharge (POME FD) was used as biostimulant to enhance the biodegradation efficiency. In this study, three TLCO degrading bacteria were isolated from seawater samples collected. Molecular identification using 16S rRNA genes sequencing was done and results show that these isolated strains belong to: Bacillus tropicus, Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus subtilis...

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in computed tomography (CT) scanning and post processing have provided new means of assessing factors affecting respiratory function. For lung cancer patients requiring resection, and especially those with respiratory comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the ability to predict post-operative lung function is a crucial step in the lung cancer operability assessment. The primary objective of the CLIPPCAIR study is to use novel CT data to develop and validate an algorithm for the prediction of lung function remaining after pneumectomy/lobectomy...

Background: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is the third, according to frequency, interstitial lung disease, with the estimated incidence rate of 1-2/100,000. In HP patients, the extensive inflammatory lesions encompassing both small airways and lung parenchyma, as well as subsequent development of lung fibrosis, may result in respiratory insufficiency and secondary pulmonary hypertension (PH). The aim of the present retrospective study was to assess the prevalence of echocardiographic signs of PH and its' clinical predictors, in newly recognized HP patients...

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the severe postoperative adverse events (5%-30%), and it is related to increased medical costs in cancer patients who undergo esophagectomies. Machine learning (ML) methods show good performance at predicting risk for AL. However, AL risk prediction based on ML models among the Chinese population is unavailable. OBJECTIVE: This study uses ML techniques to develop and validate a risk prediction model to screen patients with emerging AL risk factors...

INTRODUCTION: The National Health Service for England Long Term Plan identifies respiratory disease as one of its priority workstreams. To assist with earlier and more accurate diagnosis of lung disease they recommend improvement in delivery of quality-assured spirometry. However, there is a likelihood that patients will present with abnormal gas exchange when spirometry results are normal and therefore there will be a proportion of patients whose time to diagnosis is still protracted...

Sarcoidosis is granulomatous disease, which complex etiology is yet to be fully discovered. In the majority of cases its course is self-limiting. However it can have different clinical manifestations and can be debilitating condition with great impact on health-related quality of life (HRQL). The aim of our study was to assess if there are any differences in HRQL dependent to gender. We examined a group of 33 males and 42 females (with no differences in mean age, disease activity, TLCO, FEV1 , FVC, FEV1 /FVC) with a use of Sarcoidosis Health Questionnaire...

We report the prevalence of reduced levels of carbon monoxide transfer factor (TLCO) in middle-aged current or ex-smokers with normal spirometry. Spirometry and TLCO measurements were performed and we identified 391 subjects aged 40-60 years, with a significant smoking history and normal spirometry. In this group, 96 subjects (24%) had TLCO measuremements below the lower limit of normal when using the newly established Global Lung Initiative (GLI) reference equations. The measurement of TLCO should be considered as part of the standard assessment of smokers...

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal disease of lung scarring. Many patients later develop raised pulmonary vascular pressures, sometimes disproportionate to the interstitial disease. Previous therapeutic approaches that have targeted pulmonary vascular changes have not demonstrated clinical efficacy, and quantitative assessment of regional pulmonary vascular involvement using perfusion imaging may provide a biomarker for further therapeutic insights. METHODS: We studied 23 participants with IPF, using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and pulmonary function tests, including forced vital capacity (FVC), transfer factor (TLCO ) and coefficient (KCO ) of the lungs for carbon monoxide...
