The fundamental mechanisms of biomineralization and their translation into innovative synthetic approaches have yielded promising perspectives for the fabrication of biomimetic and bioinspired organic-inorganic hybrid materials. In siliceous sponges, the enzyme silicatein catalyzes the polycondensation of molecular precursors to nano-structured SiO2 that is deposited on self-assembled filaments consisting of the two silicatein isoforms (silicatein-α and -β) and the scaffold protein silintaphin-1. Due to its broad substrate specificity silicatein is also able to convert in vitro various other precursors to non-biogenic materials (e...

In this paper, a Cu, N co-doped TiO2 nanosheet with increased visible light photocatalytic activity was successfully synthesized using a biomimetic layer-by-layer deposition process. The polymer, branched-polyethyleneimine (b-PEI) was used as an induction agent for the hydrolysis of titanium bis(ammonium lactato)-dihydroxide (Ti-BALDH) as well as for a nitrogen resource, and the graphene oxide (GO) was used as a two-dimensional nano-template. The positively charged b-PEI will bind to the negatively charged GO and titania...

Si/N-doped TiO2 core/shell nanopillar arrays with a nanoporous structure are fabricated through a simple protein-mediated TiO2 deposition process. The Si nanopillar arrays are used as templates and alternatively immersed in aqueous solutions of catalytic molecules (protamine, PA) and the titania precursor (titanium(iv) bis(ammonium lactato)dihydroxide, Ti-BALDH) for the layer by layer mineralization of a PA/TiO2 coating. After a subsequent calcination, a N-doped TiO2 layer is formed, and its thickness could be controlled by varying the cycles of deposition...

Nature has inspired the design of complex hierarchical structures in the field of material science. Diatoms, unicellular algae with a hallmark intricate siliceous cell wall, have provided such a stimulus. Altering the chemistry of the diatom frustule has been explored to expand on the potential application of diatoms. The ability to modify the diatom in vivo opens the possibility to tailor the diatom to the end application. Herein, we report the chemical modification of the living diatom T. weissflogii using a titania precursor, titanium (IV) bis-(ammonium lactato)-dihydroxide (TiBALDH)...

We fabricated a sandwich-like branched-polyethyleneimine (b-PEI)/TiO2/Au/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite through a biomimetic layer-by-layer co-mineralization approach, and the polymer b-PEI was believed to act as both an inducing agent for the hydrolysis of titanium bis(ammonium lactato)-dihydroxide (Ti-BALDH) and a reducing agent for the reduction of HAuCl4 in the synthetic procedure. Upon organic pyrolysis in air at 500 °C, a TiO2/Au nanosheet was formed; and gold nanocrystals were observed uniformly dispersed on TiO2 nanosheet...

Formation of nanocrystalline and monodisperse TiO2 from a water soluble and stable precursor, ammonium oxo-lactato-titanate, (NH4)8Ti4O4(Lactate)8·4H2O, often referred to as TiBALDH or TALH, is demonstrated to be due to a coordination equilibrium. This compound, individual in the solid state, exists in solution in equilibrium with ammonium tris-lactato-titanate, (NH4)2Ti(Lactate)3 and uniform crystalline TiO2 nanoparticles (anatase) stabilized by surface-capping with lactate ligands. This equilibrium can be shifted towards nano-TiO2via application of a less polar solvent like methanol or ethanol, dilution of the solution, introduction of salts or raising the temperature, and reverted on addition of polar and strongly solvating media such as dimethyl sulfoxide, according to NMR...

Using cyclic constrained TiO(2) binding peptides STB1 (CHKKPSKSC), RSTB1 (CHRRPSRSC) and linear peptide LSTB1 (AHKKPSKSA), it was shown that while affinity of the peptide to TiO(2) is essential to enable TiO(2) biomineralization, other factors such as biomineralization kinetics and peptide local structure need to be considered to predict biomineralization efficacy. Cyclic and linear TiO(2) binding peptides show significantly different biomineralization activities. Cyclic STB1 and RSTB1 could induce TiO(2) precipitation in the presence of titanium(IV)-bis-ammonium-lactato-dihydroxide (TiBALDH) precursor in water or tris buffer at pH 8...

In the title compound, [Mg(C(3)H(4)O(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)], the Mg(2+) cation is six-coordinated by four O atoms from two lactate anions and two aqua ligands, completing an MgO(6) distorted octa-hedral geometry. The complex mol-ecules are bridged by O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions into helical chains parallel to the a axis, which are linked by further O-H⋯O inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular architecture.

A novel layer-by-layer self-assembly approach enabled by metal-organic coordination was developed to prepare polymer-inorganic hybrid microcapsules. Alginate was first activated via N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS) coupling chemistry, and subsequently reacted with dopamine. Afterward, the dopamine modified alginate (Alg-DA) and titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide (Ti(IV)) were alternatively deposited onto CaCO3 templates. The coordination reaction between the catechol groups of Alg-DA and the Ti(IV) allowed the alternative assembly to form a series of multilayers...

The title compound {systematic name: poly[[aqua-lithium]-μ-3,3,8,8-tetra-methyl-1,4,6,9-tetra-oxa-5λ(4)-borataspiro-[4.4]nonane-2,7-dione]}, [Li(C(8)H(12)BO(6))(H(2)O)](n) (LiBMLB), forms a 12-membered macrocycle, which lies across a crystallographic inversion center. The lithium cations are pseudo-tetra-hedrally coordinated by three methyl-lactate ligands and a water mol-ecule. The asymmetric units couple across crystallographic inversion centers, forming the 12-membered macrocycles. These macrocycles, in turn, cross-link through the Li(+) cations, forming an infinite polymeric structure in two dimensions parallel to (101)...

A simple and effective way for TiO(2) to be deposited on silicon or indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates has been achieved by using a poly(styrene-block-4-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymer template. In particular, a mechanism for the formation of TiO(2) within the P4VP phase was developed. Within this model, the TiO(2) deposition occurs by swelling of the protonated P4VP segments followed by transport of Ti precursor, probably protonated Ti(OH)(4) given the low pH conditions used, into the swollen P4VP followed by condensation into TiO(2) during the heating/plasma etch processes...

The involvement of non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses in the protective effect of diphenyl diselenide (PhSe)(2) on testicular damage caused by cadmium in mice was investigated. Mice received a single dose of CdCl(2) (5mg/kg, intraperitoneally). Thirty minutes after the CdCl(2) injection, they received a single oral dose of (PhSe)(2) (400micromol/kg). Twenty-four hours after CdCl(2) administration, blood samples were collected and mice were killed and had their testes dissected. Parameters in plasma (aspartate (AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferases and lactato dehydrogenase (LDH) activities as well as creatinine levels) were determined...
