Polymeric fluorescent organic nanoparticles (polymer-FONs) have raised considerable research attention for biomedical applications owing to their advantages as compared with fluorescent inorganic nanoparticles and small organic molecules. In this study, we presented an efficient, facile and environment-friendly strategy to produce polymer-FONs, which relied on the self-polymerization of dopamine and polyethyleneimine (PEI) in rather mild conditions. To obtain the final polymer-FONs, aldehyde group-containing copolymers (named as poly(UA-co-PEGMA)) were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization using polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and 1-undecen-10-al (UA) as monomers...

The success of gene therapy relies on efficient gene transfer and stable transgene expression. The in vivo efficiency is determined by the delivery vector, route of administration, therapeutic gene, and target cells. While some requirements are common to several strategies, others depend on the target disease and transgene product. Consequently, it is unlikely that a single system is suitable for all applications. This review examines current gene therapy strategies, focusing on non-viral approaches and the use of natural polymers with the eye, and particularly the retina, as their gene delivery target...

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, toxicity is still a concern; therefore, it is critical to study both the therapeutic and toxic properties of GNPs. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the intraperitoneal administration of GNPs (20nm, at a concentration of 2.5mg/L for 21days) every 24 or 48h on oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and electron chain transport (ETC) in the brain. Liver histology and blood marker analyses were conducted to establish a time routine of GNP administration...

Most of phosphorus (P) is present as insoluble phosphorus-bearing minerals or organic forms in soil. Geological fluorapatite (FAp) is the dominant mineral-weathering source of P. In this study, FAp was added into water and soil under elevated CO2 to investigate the pathway of P release. Two types of soils (an acidic soil from subtropical China and a saline-alkali soil from Tibet Plateau, China) with similar total P content were studied. In the solution, increased CO2 in air enhanced the dissolution of FAp, i...

Menopause-related withdrawal of ovarian estrogens is associated with reduced energy metabolism and overall impairment of substrate oxidation. Estradiol's withdrawal after menopause is associated with a reduction in energy metabolism and impaired substrate oxidation, which contributes to weight gain and visceral fat accumulation. Here we aimed to investigate the association between plasma estradiol concentrations and energy expenditure (EE)/substrate oxidation in a group of overweight postmenopausal women before and after a fatty meal challenge...

In the last decade, cuffless blood pressure measurement technology has been widely studied because it could be applied to a wearable apparatus. Electrocardiography (ECG), photo-plethysmography (PPG), and phonocardiography are always used to detect the pulse transit time (PTT) because the changed tendencies of the PTT and blood pressure have a negative relationship. In this study, the PPG signal was replaced by the impedance plethysmography (IPG) signal and was used to detect the PTT. The placement and direction of the electrode array for the IPG measurement were discussed...

The interfacial adhesion design between "mortar" and "bricks" is essential for mechanical and barrier performance of nanocellulose-based nacre-mimetic nanocomposites, especially at high moisture conditions. To address this fundamental challenge, dopamine (DA) has been conjugated to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and subsequently assembled with montmorillonite (MTM) to generate layered nanocomposite films inspired by the strong adhesion of mussel adhesive proteins to inorganic surfaces under water. The selective formation of catechol/metal ion chelation and hydrogen bonding at the interface between MTM platelets and CNFs bearing DA renders transparent films with strong mechanical properties, particularly at high humidity and in wet state...

Programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is typically produced by cancer cells and suppresses immunity through the receptor PD-1 expressed on T cells. However, the role of PD-L1 and PD-1 in regulating pain and neuronal function is unclear. Here we report that both melanoma and normal neural tissues including dorsal root ganglion (DRG) produce PD-L1 that can potently inhibit acute and chronic pain. Intraplantar injection of PD-L1 evoked analgesia in naive mice via PD-1, whereas PD-L1 neutralization or PD-1 blockade induced mechanical allodynia...
