Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the most common cause of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and can be identified in magnetic resonance imaging as hippocampal atrophy and subsequent volume loss. Detecting this kind of abnormalities through simple radiological assessment could be difficult, even for experienced radiologists. For that reason, hippocampal volumetry is generally used to support this kind of diagnosis. Manual volumetry is the traditional approach but it is time consuming and requires the physician to be familiar with neuroimaging software tools...

This paper introduces a glasses-typed wearable system to detect user's emotions using facial expression and physiological responses. The system is designed to acquire facial expression through a built-in camera and physiological responses such as photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrodermal activity (EDA) in unobtrusive way. We used video clips for induced emotions to test the system suitability in the experiment. The results showed a few meaningful properties that associate emotions with facial expressions and physiological responses captured by the developed wearable device...

Concurrently detecting the electrical activity of neurons and neurotransmitter release signals, will have a great significance in understanding the working mechanism of the brain. This paper describes a neural information detecting system based on microelectrode array(MEA) measuring neuroelectricity in hippocampus in vivo and dopamine(DA) in vitro. The detecting system contains of electrophysiological headstage, electrochemical headstage, microprocessor, electrophysiological signal amplifier, data acquisition module and neural signal analysis software...

Reported cases of adverse events and product recalls expose limitations of biomedical signal acquisition devices. Approximately, ninety percent of the 1.210 recalls reported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2006 and 2011 were of class 2 devices such as Electrocardiography (ECG) devices. We show in this paper how manufacturers of biomedical signal acquisition devices can argue effectiveness of these devices using Colored Petri Nets (CPN) models and assurance cases in Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) by means of an ECG case study...

Dual-mode multielectrode recordings have become routine in rodent neuroscience research. However, robust and reliable application of acute, multielectrode recording methods in brain especially for in vivo research remains a challenge. In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), the efficacy of L-dopa therapy depends on its ability to restore Dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the striatum. In this paper, We describe a low cost thin film 16 sites implantable microelectrode array (MEA) chip fabricated by standard lithography technology for in vivo test...

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used technique in biomedical and chemical analysis. A prototype of comparative frequency response analysis (FRA) system for measuring EIS is proposed in this work. Compared to traditional FRA-based systems, neither quadrature sinusoidal signals nor two identical sensing paths are needed. The experimental results based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for detection of melatonin solutions are shown to validate the proposed EIS measurement system...

Modulating the electric dipole field with ultrasound pulse, ultrasound current source density imaging (UCSDI) can detect current direction and form spatial 3D imaging of dipole changing in one period of treatment. As ultrasound pulse passes through the conductive media, it convolves/correlates with the inner product of the electric field of a dipole and lead field of a pair of detectors, making the shifting frequency of polarity lower than the center frequency of the ultrasound pulse. After acoustoelectric (AE) signal is shifted to base band, the AE voltage is positive at anode and negative at cathode...

Cyclic alternating patterns (CAPs) occur during normal sleep, but higher CAP rates are associated with abnormal conditions, such as epilepsy. Efficient automatic classification of CAP A-phase sub-types would be of remarkable importance for the consideration of CAP as a disease bio-marker. This paper reports a multi-step methodology for the classification of A-phases subtypes. The methodology encompasses: feature extraction, feature ranking, and classification (Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Discriminant Analysis (DA))...

Minimally invasive surgery can be performed with robotic assistance, as evolution of laparoscopic surgery. Robots for assisted surgery are far from being user friendly and require extensive training. To this end, ad-hoc devices and experimental set-ups are needed. The da Vinci system is one of the most diffused surgical robotics technology. The aim of the study was two-fold: i) to propose a neurophysiological measure by which objectively assess the learning progress of the users by means of a simulator of the da Vinci system, and ii) to demonstrate the advantages of cognitive assessment with respect to the standard methodologies for the evaluation of training efficiency...

Sulfation is a dynamic and complex posttranslational modification process. It can occur at various positions within the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) backbone and modulates extracellular signals such as cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions; different sulfation patterns have been identified for the same organs and cells during their development. Because of their high specificity in relation to function,GAGsulfation patterns are referred to as the sulfation code. This review explores the role of GAG sulfation in different biological processes at the cell, tissue, and organism levels...

Methods: Thirty cases, previously treated according to the new algorithm, were presented to four spine surgeons who were questioned about their personal suggestion for treatment, and the treatment suggested according to the application of the algorithm. After four weeks, the same questions were asked again to evaluate reliability (intra- and inter-observer) using the Kappa index. Results: The reliability of the treatment suggested by applying the algorithm was superior to the reliability of the surgeons' personal suggestion for treatment...
