PURPOSE: To determine the visual outcome at 5 years postoperatively in patients operated for cataract associated with diabetes mellitus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study on a group of 41 eyes in patients with diabetes, who were operated for cataract (the same surgeon) by facoemulsification and IOL implantation in the capsular bag, without intraoperative complications, for 60 months (during 2003-2007). RESULTS: 27 patients with diabetes were included in the study, the average duration of diabetes was 10, 3 years...

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the efficiency of toric artificial intraocular lenses in correcting the astigmatism of pacients operated by facoemulsification. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried in which took part during the following period: february 2008 - february 2010. The study was carried on a number of 37 eyes. The pacients were evaluated by: refractometry, keratometry, corneal topography biometry, biomicroscopic examination of the eye (anterior and poterior poles), aplanotonometry the calculation of the IOL dioptric value and implantation axes with the help of the Alcon-acrysof calculator...

We present the case of a 65 years old pacient which was admitted for the sudden decrease of visual acuity in the left eye, accompanied by ocular pain and conjunctival hiperemia, simptoms appeared after an ocular trauma. After the clinical and paraclinical examination we determined the diagnosis of OS: Penetrating ocular trauma with retention of a foreign body; posttraumatic cataract. Surgical treatement was warrented and we performed OS : Facoemulsification + PFK implant in sulcus + 23 Ga posterior vitrectomy + peeling of the posterior hyaloid membrane + extraction of the foreign body + LASER endofotocoagulation + transscleral cryotherapy + SF6 gas injection...

The retrospective study of cataract surgery with new technique, phacoemulsification, prove that the method implementation was a success in Ophthalmology Department of University Emergency Hospital Oradea. The phacoemulsification demonstrated it is superior in functional rehabilitation and in the socio/professional reintegration of patient. In year 2005 the number of patients with cataract with phacoemulsification surgery was 98 of total of 521 cataracts. The number of intervention increased from year to year to amount that the phacoemusification was practiced in all patients in 2009...

Cataract facoemulsification with continuous anterior capsulorhexis and foldable intraocular lens implantation into the capsular bag has become basic, standard method in cataract surgery and curvilinear capsulorhexis s the most common technique for opening the anterior lens capsule. The opening, made during the operation, within several months of postoperative evolution gradually constricts and in extreme cases it may even close completely. That course of healing is not desirable because of evoking a noted impairment of vision...

Three eyes of three patients with advanced primary open angle glaucoma developed hypotony and choroidal detachment 2-3 months following technically uncomplicated trabeculectomy, in one patient and facoemulsification in two patients. The two latter patients had undergone trabeculectomy previously. No wound or bleb leakage were found. Patients did not receive any antiglaucoma medications before the detachment. After treatment with topical corticosteroids and cycloplegic eyedrops both patients showed marked clinical improvement within 2-6 weeks...

CASE REPORT: Two female patients underwent combined surgery of cataract and epiretinal membrane by facoemulsification and posterior vitrectomy. After surgery they developed mottled hypo and hyperpigmented retinal alterations diagnosed as Xenon light induced phototoxicity lesions. DISCUSSION: Factors associated with the appearance of this lesions are: light power, exposure time, wavelength and endoilluminator-retina distance. In spite of the foveal protective effect, we must act over these factors to avoid the development of retinal alterations...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the adequacy to clinical practice of cataract procedures contracted in the Gipuzkoa Health Area (in public as well as concerted hospitals) from 1995. A second aim is to identify the achievements obtained three years after its implementation comparing the data with those of 1994, a year before. METHODS: Before its implementation a multidisciplinar team established the number of surgical procedures to be contracted each year by age and sex, as well as the technical and quality conditions (out-patient surgery, loco-regional anaesthetic, facoemulsification, etc...
