We report about a man in his mid-50s who was prescribed pregabalin (150 mg/day) for neuropathic pain due to a herniated intervertebral disc. Four weeks later, he presented to the emergency room with symptoms consistent with delirium. After ruling out acute intoxication with a substance and neurological causes, collateral information from the family and review of his medical chart indicated potential discontinuation syndrome owing to pregabalin. Following the successful treatment and resolution of delirium, the patient revealed he had been consistently consuming pregabalin doses upwards of 2 g/day over the past 2 weeks, leading to the premature exhaustion of his prescription and an abrupt cessation...

BACKGROUND: "Locality" is a significant factor in substance initiation, maintenance, and relapse. The pattern of substance dependence among rural and urban populations varies across studies and is scarcely studied, warranting further research. To compare presenting patterns (sociodemographic and drug-related variables), reasons for substance use, and psychiatric comorbidities (prevalence, type, and severity) between rural and urban substance-dependent groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analytical study in a government de-addiction center, including rural and urban patient groups aged 18-65...

Bacosides are the main biologically active components derived from the plant bacopa monnieri ( Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.), which has been used as a nootropic in Indian medicine for many centuries. In recent years, these compounds have attracted attention because of their wide range of neurobiological effects. The neuroprotective effects of bacosides on brain neurons under the influence of various damaging factors (neurotoxins, oxidative stress, beta-amyloid deposition, cigarette smoke, etc.) have been established...

BACKGROUND: Suicide prevention is currently a national health priority in Canada. Emergency departments (EDs) are critical settings for suicide prevention, and in our local psychiatric ED at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, we plan to embed an app-based tool called the Hope app to support suicide safety planning intervention. The app is free and available on app stores, and usability tests have been completed. As a next step to embed this new tool into the routine clinical workflow, research is needed to assess determinants of and design strategies for implementation with the end goal of routinization...

BACKGROUND/IMPORTANCE: Considerable attention has been paid to identifying and mitigating perioperative opioid-related harms. However, rates of postsurgical opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose, along with associated risk factors, have not been clearly defined. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the evidence connecting perioperative opioid prescribing with postoperative OUD and overdose, compare these data with evidence from the addiction literature, discuss the clinical impact of these conditions, and make recommendations for further study...

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol remains the fourth‑leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. The objective of this study was to compare the incidence of phenobarbital (PHB)-resistant withdrawal and determine risk factors for PHB-resistant alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adults admitted to an academic center with AWS who received PHB as part of an institution-specific treatment protocol. The primary outcome was incidence of AWS resistant to initial protocolized PHB load across two cohorts (standard-dose, 10 mg/kg vs...

INTRODUCTION: In addition to the higher burden of mental health disease in the military, there is a compounding antecedent association between behavioral health comorbidities and the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in this population. Despite the low prevalence of new-onset ADHD in adults globally, the rate of stimulant (i.e., amphetamines) prescription is increasing. Stimulants can exacerbate mental health disease (often masquerading as ADHD symptomatology), precluding optimal treatment of the underlying etiology and imposing unnecessary dangerous side effects...

Psychedelics are powerful psychoactive substances that alter perception and mood processes. Their effectiveness in the treatment of psychiatric diseases was known before their prohibition. An increasing number of recent studies, due to the indisputable resurgence of serotonergic hallucinogens, have shown their efficacy in alleviating depression, anxiety, substance abuse therapies, and existential distress treatment in patients facing life-threatening illness. Psychedelics are generally considered to be physiologically safe with low toxicity and low addictive potential...

Nomophobia, often known as a 21st-century disorder, is a recent condition that has received considerable attention, with numerous studies conducted to better understand it since it was first introduced in 2008. To better understand the present research status and prospects to assist practitioners, policymakers, and funding agencies in protecting the population from nomophobia-related harm, a bibliometric study of nomophobia-related publications was conducted. We used Scopus and dimensions.ai to perform a search between 2008 and 2022...

INTRODUCTION: Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are cells derived from somatic cells via reprogramming techniques. The iPSC approach has been increasingly used in neuropsychiatric research in the last decade. Though substance use disorders (SUDs) are a commonly occurring psychiatric disorder, the application of iPSC model in addiction research has been limited. No comprehensive review has been reported. We conducted a scoping review to collate existing evidence on the iPSC technologies applied to SUD research...

Recovery capital (RC) encompasses the wide range of resources individuals can employ to recover from Substance Use Disorder (SUD). It consists of five subdomains: human, social, cultural, financial, and community RC. Negative recovery capital (NRC) represents the obstacles to recovery. Research on (N)RC in complex multimorbid populations is scarce. This study offers an initial exploration of the viability of (N)RC in three individuals with SUD, psychiatric comorbidities, and an intellectual disability (a triple diagnosis) in inpatient addiction treatment...

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is one of the most important consequences of alcohol use disorder, a complex neuropsychiatric disorder, which is firstly treated in non-specific and secondly in psychiatric/addictive in- or outpatient units. On the other hand, alcohol withdrawal syndrome is one of the most important outcomes of the severity of alcohol use disorder, further, it can lead to the development of alcohol-related seizure and delirium tremens. Hence, early recognition and optimal treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome have a critical importance...

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increases the risk for multiple comorbid psychiatric disorders, such as substance use disorder. Comorbid ADHD and substance use disorder has been shown to increase the risk of adverse occupational, social, psychological, and physical outcomes. Because of the severe risks of substance use, it is useful to determine the relative comorbidity of ADHD among different types of substance use disorders. This study examined the prevalence of ADHD in residential addiction treatment as well as the relative prevalence of ADHD among mono-substance use, comorbid substance use (2 comorbid substance use disorders), and polysubstance use (3+ substance use disorders)...

OBJECTIVES: Despite substantial investment in expanding access to treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), overdose deaths continue to increase. Primary care holds enormous potential to expand access to OUD treatment, but few patients receive medications for OUD (MOUD) in primary care.
