Evidence implicating p38γ and p38δ (p38γ/p38δ) in inflammation are mainly based on experiments using Mapk12/Mapk13 -deficient (p38γ/δKO) mice, which show low levels of TPL2, the kinase upstream of MKK1-ERK1/2 in myeloid cells. This could obscure p38γ/p38δ roles, since TPL2 is essential for regulating inflammation. Here, we generated a Mapk12 D171A/D171A / Mapk13 -/- (p38γ/δKIKO) mouse, expressing kinase-inactive p38γ and lacking p38δ. This mouse exhibited normal TPL2 levels, making it an excellent tool to elucidate specific p38γ/p38δ functions...

Background: Definitions of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) differ among guidelines. Any systemic histological finding of CS is essential for the diagnosis of CS in the 2014 Heart Rhythm Society statement, but not necessary in the Japanese Circulation Society 2016 guidelines. This study aimed to reveal the differences in outcomes by comparing 2 groups, namely CS patients with or without systemic histologically proven granuloma. Methods and Results: This study retrospectively included 231 consecutive patients with CS...

There are only two Aphaenogaster species from the subterranea group in the western Mediterranean: A.ichnusa Santschi, 1925, from south-western Europe, and A.subterranea (Latreille, 1798), also occurring in central and eastern Europe. Historically, the two species have been widely misunderstood: A.ichnusa was long considered a Sardinian endemic subspecies of A.subterranea , while its continental populations were misidentified as A.subterranea s. str. Recently, A.ichnusa was elevated to species rank and its worker caste was redescribed with that of A...

Plastic is a widespread marine pollutant, with most studies focusing on the distribution of floating plastic debris at the sea surface. Recent evidence, however, indicates a significant presence of such low density plastic in the water column and at the seafloor, but information on its origin and dispersion is lacking. Here, we studied the pathways and fate of sinking plastic debris in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most polluted world seas. We used a recent Lagrangian plastic-tracking model, forced with realistic parameters, including a maximum estimated sinking speed of 7...

Temporal arteritis (TA) is a large-vessel vasculitis mostly seen in older patients. Amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis secondary to a chronic inflammation induces multiple organ dysfunctions, including a dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract. Herein, we present a case of TA complicated by AA amyloidosis that was resistant to oral and intravenous steroids. An 80-year-old man with a history of new-onset headache, jaw claudication, and distended temporal arteries was referred to our department. On admission, the patient presented with tenderness and a subcutaneous temporal nodule in both temple arteries...

Circulating 17β-estradiol (E2) controls energy homeostasis and feeding behaviors primarily by its nuclear receptor, estrogen receptor (ER)α. As such, it is important to understand the role of ER α signaling in the neuroendocrine control of feeding. Our previous data indicated that the loss of ER α signaling through estrogen response elements (ERE) alters food intake in a female mouse model. Hence, we hypothesize that ERE-dependent ERα is necessary for typical feeding behaviors in mice...

BACKGROUND: Behavioral interventions for chronic pain among people with HIV (PWH) are understudied, with great potential to improve pain and function. Chronic pain is an important comorbidity that affects between 30% and 85% of PWH and is associated with greater odds of functional impairment, increased emergency room utilization, suboptimal retention in HIV care, and failure to achieve virologic suppression. However, to date, there are few effective and scalable interventions for chronic pain in PWH...

White adipocytes act as lipid storage, and play an important role in energy homeostasis. The small GTPase Rac1 has been implicated in the regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in white adipocytes. Adipocyte-specific rac1 -knockout (adipo- rac1 -KO) mice exhibit atrophy of subcutaneous and epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT); white adipocytes in these mice are significantly smaller than controls. Here, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the aberrations in the development of Rac1-deficient white adipocytes by employing in vitro differentiation systems...

Despite new antiseizure medications, the development of cholinergic-induced refractory status epilepticus (RSE) continues to be a therapeutic challenge as pharmacoresistance to benzodiazepines and other antiseizure medications quickly develops. Studies conducted by Epilepsia. 2005;46:142 demonstrated that the initiation and maintenance of cholinergic-induced RSE are associated with trafficking and inactivation of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABAA R) thought to contribute to the development of benzodiazepine pharmacoresistance...

A 59-year-old female with recurrent Anterior Choroidal Artery (AchA) aneurysm was elected for surgery at our institution through a standard pterional approach. Two thin perforating branches were found to origin from the dome of the aneurysm during operation, and therefore complete aneurysm clipping preserving these branches was not feasible. These perforating branches were temporarily occluded under motor-evoked potential (MEP) monitoring. The MEPs remained stable during 10 min of temporary clipping, and we concluded that these branches could be sacrificed, and therefore neck clipping was performed occluding these tiny AchA perforators...

There are 2 genetically divergent groups in the dojo loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus: A and B. Although most wild-type diploids reproduce sexually, clonal diploids (clonal loach) reproduce gynogenetically in certain areas. Clonal loaches produce unreduced isogenic eggs by premeiotic endomitosis, and such diploid eggs develop gynogenetically following activation by the sperm of sympatric wild-type diploids. These clonal loaches have presumably arisen from past hybridization events between 2 different ancestors...

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by reduced expression of the mitochondrial protein frataxin (FXN). Most FRDA patients are homozygous for large expansions of GAA repeats in intron 1 of FXN, while some are compound heterozygotes with an expanded GAA tract in one allele and a missense or nonsense mutation in the other. A missense mutation, changing a glycine to valine at position 130 (G130V), is prevalent among the clinical variants. We and others have demonstrated that levels of mature FXN protein in FRDA G130V samples are reduced below those detected in samples harboring homozygous repeat expansions...

Elliptic flow measurements from two-, four-, and six-particle correlations are used to investigate flow fluctuations in collisions of U+U at sqrt[s_{NN}]=193  GeV, Cu+Au at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV and Au+Au spanning the range sqrt[s_{NN}]=11.5-200  GeV. The measurements show a strong dependence of the flow fluctuations on collision centrality, a modest dependence on system size, and very little if any, dependence on particle species and beam energy. The results, when compared to similar LHC measurements, viscous hydrodynamic calculations, and trento model eccentricities, indicate that initial-state-driven fluctuations predominate the flow fluctuations generated in the collisions studied...
