Rapid global industrialization accompanies the discharge of industrial wastewater. p -Toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA), a kind of aromatic sulfonate that belongs to the refractory organic pollutant, is one of the most widely used chemicals in pharmaceutical, dye, petrochemical and plastic industries. In this study, we developed a filtration-enhanced electro-Fenton (FEEF) reactor to remove PTSA from synthetic wastewater. A filtration-enhanced stainless-steel mesh (FESSM) was used as the cathode. Under the optimal operating conditions of applied voltage 2...

Recent advancements in electromechanical coupling effects enable electromechanical materials in soft and stretchable formats, offering unique opportunities for biomimetic applications. However, high electromechanical performance and mechanical elasticity hardly coexist in soft materials. Flexoelectricity, an electromechanical coupling between strain gradient and electric polarization, possesses great potential of strain gradient engineering and material design in soft elastomeric materials. In this work, we report a flexoelectric enhanced elastomer-based film (FEEF) with both high electromechanical capability and stretchability...

INTRODUCTION: Making mistakes is at the heart of learning. This principle is central to "re-learning" how to speak and, when applied with music, can elicit a robust brain activation. As simple as a search for the right note provokes a plastic process in normal language development since it activates the right hemisphere homolog of Broca's area, which "takes over" language functions. This review and pilot experiment examines language neuroplasticity by observing how Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a treatment modality that combines elements of speech, rhythm, and melody, plays a role in language re-learning and how its limitations can be overcome with a new tool our lab is developing - Dynamic Adaptive Speech Reconstruction (DASR)...

Hydrolysates containing angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptide were prepared from protein of Alaska pollack skins using alcalase and trypsin. The protein hydrolysate was separated by ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-25 gel filtration chromatography and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), from which a novel purified peptide was obtained. Both random coil structure and β-sheet in the purified peptide were revealed in Fourier transform infrared spectrum. The amino sequence of the purified peptide was identified as GPLGVP, VLYPVK, VFLENVLR, and FEEF by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS (HPLC-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry)...

The expected free energy (EFE) is a central quantity in the theory of active inference. It is the quantity that all active inference agents are mandated to minimize through action, and its decomposition into extrinsic and intrinsic value terms is key to the balance of exploration and exploitation that active inference agents evince. Despite its importance, the mathematical origins of this quantity and its relation to the variational free energy (VFE) remain unclear. In this letter, we investigate the origins of the EFE in detail and show that it is not simply "the free energy in the future...

A radioimmunoassay for liver fructose-1,6-diphosphatase (D-fructose-1,6-bisphosphate 1-phosphohydrlase, EC 3.1.3.11) has been developed based on maintenance of its tetrameric structure and immunologic integrity after iodination by the Bolton-Hunter technique. The assay detected as little as 2 ng of standard enzyme. Nonspecific interference by tissue components did not occur. Enzyme concentration (mumol/1000 g tissue wet weight) was measured in tissue extracts of 49 rabbits subjected to a variety of conditions...

The purpose of this report is to consider involvement of the great toe by rheumatoid arthritis, defining significant deformities, describing clinical patterns and discussing the pathomechanics of these findings, in what is an ongoing disease. 200 consecutive patients admitted to hospital with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis were screened for pain or deformity of the great toe. Feet that had undergone previous surgery or had other underlying pathology were excluded from the series. 194 feef were found to have halluceal involvement...
