Renal cell cancer rarely metastasizes to the thyroid gland, and it has been reported to present as a solitary mass. We present a case of diffuse thyroid cancer metastases from renal cell cancer. Bilateral internal jugular vein tumor thrombi were also present. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of diffuse thyroid metastases from renal cell cancer in the English literature. Renal cell cancer metastases should be considered in the differential of thyroid imaging abnormalities arising in the setting of known renal cell carcinoma, particularly late in the course of disease...

Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is a common problem in pediatric population, and the natural history of SCH varies depending on its etiology. Whether Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) negatively affects the natural course of SCH was investigated in pediatric patients without concomitant diseases. Predictors for levothyroxine medication were also evaluated. Medical records of 109 children with SCH (91 girls, 5?18 years) diagnosed between 2005 and 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified into HT (n = 37) and isolated non-autoimmune hyperthyrotropinemia (iso-NAHT, n = 72)...

Graves' hyperthyroidism, a common autoimmune disease caused by pathogenic autoantibodies to the thyrotropin (TSH) receptor (TSHR), can be treated but not cured. This single autoantigenic target makes Graves' disease a prime candidate for Ag-specific immunotherapy. Previously, in an induced mouse model, injecting TSHR A-subunit protein attenuated hyperthyroidism by diverting pathogenic TSHR Abs to a nonfunctional variety. In this study, we explored the possibility of a similar diversion in a mouse model that spontaneously develops pathogenic TSHR autoantibodies, NOD...

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia is a rare thyroid neoplasm of uncertain pathogenesis that resembles salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This multi-institutional study characterizes the clinicopathologic and molecular features of this tumor by utilizing next-generation sequencing to assess common mutations and gene fusions involved in thyroid carcinogenesis as well as fluorescence in-situ hybridization for MAML2 translocations typical of salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Nine cases (6 females and 3 males, mean age: 59 years, range 30-77 years) were identified...

Familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia (FDH) is an autosomal dominant condition and is the most commonly inherited euthyroid hyperthyroxinemia in Caucasians. However, it is extremely rare in Asian populations. A 30-year-old Japanese woman, who was incidentally found to have apparent thyroid dysfunction, was admitted to our hospital in 2004. She had extremely elevated serum free thyroxine (FT4), moderately elevated free triiodothyronine (FT3), and normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Clinical thyroid examination revealed no abnormalities other than small goiter...

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has a high metastatic potential, and most commonly metastasizes via the bloodstream, although lymphatic metastases also occur. RCC is well-known for its propensity to metastasize to unusual sites, and late metastasis, even after a number of years, is common. The occurrence of RCC metastasis to the head and neck region is uncommon, and occurs primarily in the thyroid gland and in patients with widespread dissemination. Involvement of the parathyroid gland in metastatic carcinoma is extremely rare...

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has a good prognosis with a 10-yr survival greater than 90%. Recently, a micro-papillary pattern with hobnail appearance (MPHC) in PTC has been indicated as associated with poor prognosis, but this suggestion is based only on a few cases from geographical areas different from ours. Two-hundred ninety-nine consecutive PTC cases were collected between the years of 1992 and 2014 at our institution. The corresponding histologic sections (at least 6 for each case) were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and reviewed independently by two pathologists to reach a consensus on the identification and quantification of the MPHC...

Lymphocytic adrenal medullitis characterized by inflammation and atrophy in the medulla of the bilateral adrenal glands was observed in an 18-month-old male laboratory beagle dog. It might be that the present lymphocytic adrenal medullitis is an autoimmune-mediated disease as the histological characteristics are consistent with an autoimmune pathogenesis. However, the actual cause remains unclear as the existence of serum autoantibodies against the adrenal medulla could not be confirmed. Although this dog also contracted lymphocytic thyroiditis along with serum thyroglobulin autoantibodies, indicating that the thyroiditis occurred with an autoimmune basis; the relation between the adrenal medullitis and thyroiditis is unknown...

This communication enumerates the current uses and potential areas where PET could be clinically utilized for developing "precision medicine" type model in thyroid carcinoma. (1) In routine clinics, PET imaging (with fluorodeoxyglucose [FDG]) is utilized to investigate patients of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) with high thyroglobulin and negative iodine scintigraphy (TENIS) and in medullary carcinoma thyroid (MCT) when the tumor markers (eg, calcitonin and carcino embryonic antigen [CEA]) are raised postoperatively (PET with FDG, (68)Ga-DOTA-NOC/TATE, FDOPA)...

Based on microscopic and immunohistochemical characterization, we documented spontaneous proliferative and neoplastic lesions in the thyroid and parathyroid glands of nondomestic felids. Ten animals (4 leopards, 3 tigers, and 3 cougars), all with a previous diagnosis of thyroid neoplasia were identified from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine database. The mean age of affected animals was 15.9 y. Twelve neoplasms were identified; 2 animals had 2 concurrent neoplasms. After immunohistochemical characterization using a panel of chromogranin A, thyroglobulin, and calcitonin, 7 of the former thyroid neoplasms were diagnosed as thyroid adenomas, 1 was diagnosed as a thyroid carcinoma, and 4 were diagnosed as parathyroid adenomas...
