The role of rhizobia in alleviating cadmium (Cd) stress in woody legumes is still unclear. Therefore, two types of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) with high and low Cd accumulation abilities were selected from 11 genotypes in China, and the effects of rhizobium (Mesorhizobium huakuii GP1T11) inoculation on the growth, CO2 and H2 O gas exchange parameters, Cd accumulation, and the absorption of mineral elements of the high (SX) and low Cd-accumulator (HB) were compared. The results showed that rhizobium-inoculation significantly increased biomass, shoot Cd contents, Cd accumulation, root-to-shoot translocation factor (TF) and the absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in both SX and HB...

Ozone is one of the important molecules in terms of the impact on the atmospheric chemistry, climate changes, bio- and eco-systems and human health. It has a strong absorption in the microwave, terahertz and far-infrared spectral ranges where a large part of the Earth's outgoing longwave radiation to space is located. In this work, the observations, and analyses of the ozone high-resolution spectra in the THz range recorded using the Synchrotron light source of the SOLEIL CNRS equipment are reported for the first time...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of death in the world. The multi-drug resistance, especially in metastatic colorectal cancer drives the development of new strategies that secure a positive outcome and reduce undesirable side effects. Nanotechnology has made an impact in addressing some pharmacokinetic and safety issues related to administration of free therapeutic agents. However, demands of managing complex biointerfacing require equally complex methods for introducing stimuli-responsive or targeting elements...

Vapor-phase molecular simulation studies of aromatic compounds with five or more fluorine atoms on the ring reveal emission spectra characterized by S0 → πσ* and πσ*→S0 transitions. In this study, the absorption, excitation, and solvent-dependent emission spectra of fluorinated benzenes, including pentaflurophenyalanine (F5Phe), which is a potential marker for biochemical research, were collected and compared to the results of the simulation. Time-dependent self-consistent field (TD-SCF) density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to examine the nature of excited states and relevant photo-physical processes...

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) biocomposites filled with wheat straw flour (WSF) were enhanced through modifying WSF surface by pretreatments, i.e., alkali solution (NaOH 1-7 wt%) dipping, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane solution (APTES 0.5-2 wt%) soaking, or NaOH+APTES synergistic impregnation. The WSF was characterized by microscopy, spectroscopy, diffractometry, thermogravimetry, and wetting. Through different levels of surface etching effect or grafting functional groups, all the pretreatments removed unstable, amorphous substances on WSF, obtaining higher crystallinity by 2-12 %, degradation temperature by 57-83 °C, and lower water contact angle by 7-24°...

OBJECTIVE: Anti-tuberculosis (antiTB) drugs are characterized by an important inter-interindividual pharmacokinetic variability poorly predictable from individual patients' characteristics. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) may therefore be beneficial for patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, especially for the management of multidrug/extensively drug resistant- (MDR/XDR)-TB. Our objective was to develop robust HPLC-MS/MS methods for plasma quantification of 15 antiTB drugs and 2 metabolites, namely rifampicin, isoniazid plus N-acetyl-isoniazid, pyrazinamide, ethambutol (the conventional quadritherapy for susceptible TB) as well as combination of agents against MDR/XDR-TB: bedaquiline, clofazimine, delamanid and its metabolite M1, levofloxacin, linezolid, moxifloxacin, pretomanid, rifabutin, rifapentine, sutezolid, and cycloserine...

Serine protease thrombin is a strong neurotoxin produced by the injured brain and an Alzheimer's disease biomarker. To address its point-of-care testing (POCT), we adapted the O2 -dependent aptamer assay for thrombin to gold screen-printed electrodes (Au SPE). The assay exploits reagentless (with no mediators) electrocatalytic activity of hemin-G4 DNAzyme in O2 reduction. Au SPEs modified with thiolated hemin-conjugated aptamer and PEG showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity in O2 reduction upon thrombin binding to the aptamer, then folding into the electroactive hemin-G4 DNAzyme structure...

Computer-mouse work is characterized by repetitive movements combined with mental demands. The present purpose was to study how the body responded to simulated Computer Aided Design (CAD) work without memory demand and when a high short-term memory demand was introduced. Nine female subjects repetitively performed a task which involved 15 s of elevation of the right index and middle fingers followed by 6 s of rest. Every second time the fingers rested, the left index finger was required to type a six-figure number, either '123456' (without memory demand) or a random number shown half a minute before (with memory demand)...
