Over the past decade, considerable progress has been made in the control, elimination, and eradication of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Despite these advances, most NTD programs have recently experienced important setbacks; for example, NTD interventions were some of the most frequently and severely impacted by service disruptions due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Mathematical modeling can help inform selection of interventions to meet the targets set out in the NTD road map 2021-2030, and such studies should prioritize questions that are relevant for decision-makers, especially those designing, implementing, and evaluating national and subnational programs...

Genomic regions related to tropical adaptability are of paramount importance for animal breeding nowadays, especially in the context of global climate change. Moreover, understanding the genomic architecture of these regions may be very relevant for aiding breeding programs in choosing the best selection scheme for tropical adaptation and/or implementing a crossbreeding scheme. The composite MONTANA TROPICAL® population was developed by crossing cattle of four different biological types to improve production in harsh environments...

There are many healthcare financing programs (HFPs) in Cameroon; however, there is a lack of information on these programs' economic effectiveness and efficiency. Involvement of local stakeholders in the economic evaluations (EEs) of HFPs is critical for ensuring contextual factors are considered prior to program implementation. We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the need for EEs of Cameroonian HFPs. Regular staff in supervisory roles aged 18 years and above were recruited in four Cameroonian cities...

In view of the rapid development and application of blockchain technology, this paper considers a secondary supply chain system consisting of a single upstream supplier and a downstream e-tailer that implements blockchain technology and a traditional e-tailer that does not implement blockchain technology. We establish the demand function of two channels based on consumers' sensitivity to the blockchain and use the Stackelberg game model to compare and analyse the e-tailers' profits from the two channels. For the basic properties, interestingly, we find that there exists a critical threshold on the cost sensitivity to effort that helps each e-tailer decide whether to implement effort...

Intellectual property is crucial for the development of firms. At the micro level, firm comprehensive intellectual property ability involves abilities about intellectual property creation, utilization, protection, and management. In order to develop the comprehensive intellectual property ability of firms, the China National Intellectual Property Administration began to implement the national intellectual property demonstration advantage firm (NIPDAF) policy in 2013. Based on this exogenous policy shock, using data from listed companies from 2011 to 2020 as the research sample, the time-varying DID method is used to test the impact of the NIPDAF policy intended to cultivate comprehensive intellectual property ability on firm productivity...

To encourage technological and industrial innovation, nations worldwide implement "re-industrialization" and "manufacturing return." This study investigates the relationship between GDP growth, expenditure on research and development, and medium- to high-tech as a percentage of manufactured exports on technological innovation in Pakistan. We evaluated long-run and short-run causal relationships using the ARDL, bound-F test, and ECM regression. The study found a positive relationship between GDP growth and technological innovation in the short and long run...

In recent years, with the trend of open science, there have been many efforts to share research data on the internet. To promote research data sharing, data curation is essential to make the data interpretable and reusable. In research fields such as life sciences, earth sciences, and social sciences, tasks and procedures have been already developed to implement efficient data curation to meet the needs and customs of individual research fields. However, not only data sharing within research fields but also interdisciplinary data sharing is required to promote open science...

BACKGROUND: Accuracy of molecular tools for the identification of parasites that cause human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) could largely depend on the sampling method. Non-invasive or less-invasive sampling methods such as filter paper imprints and cotton swabs are preferred over punch biopsies and lancet scrapings for detection methods of Leishmania based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) because they are painless, simple, and inexpensive, and of benefit to military and civilian patients to ensure timely treatment...

BACKGROUND: Despite policy initiatives and strategic measures highly focused on preventing mother-to-child transmission through the implementation of the Option B+ program, adherence to the treatment is still challenging. Sepsis is the most frequent risk factor for acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill infants. Sepsis-induced dysregulation of kidney microcirculation in newborns is unresolved. The objective of this study was to use the translational swine model to evaluate changes in kidney function during the early phase of sepsis in newborns and the impact of fluid plus norepinephrine (NE) resuscitation. Newborn pigs (3-7-day-old) were allocated randomly to three groups: 1) Sham, 2) Sepsis (cecal ligation and puncture; CLP) without subsequent resuscitation, and 3) Sepsis with Lactated Ringer plus NE resuscitation...

Introduction: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. It is a prevalent disease worldwide, affecting ∼70 million people and expected to reach up to 112 million by 2040. Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the implementation and initial experience of a telemedicine program to monitor glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients in a large, integrated health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective chart review of established glaucoma or glaucoma suspect patients who participated in a telemedicine evaluation at the ophthalmic center of a large, Colombian health care system between June 2020 and April 2023 was conducted...

Youth with HIV (YWH) face challenges in achieving viral suppression, particularly in the Southern United States, and welcome novel interventions responsive to community needs. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) describes factors that influence behavior change, and the Positive Youth Development (PYD) supports youth-focused program design. We applied TPB and PYD to explore factors supporting care engagement and challenges for YWH in South Texas. We conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with YWH and 7 focus groups with 26 stakeholders informed by TPB, PYD, and themes from a youth advisory board (YAB)...

We present the detailed topographical characterisation (stationary points and minimum energy paths connecting them) of the full dimensional (81D) intermolecular potential energy surface associated with the non-covalent interactions between the NO2 radical and the pyrene (C16 H10 ) molecule. The whole procedure is (quasi) fully automated. We have used our recent algorithm vdW-TSSCDS as implemented on the freely-available AutoMekin software package. To this end, a series of inexpensive classical trajectories using forces from a low-level (semi-empirical) theory are used to sample the configuration space of the system in the search for candidates to first order saddle points...

METHODS: The Web Information Tool (WIT) implements the ABC concept via: (1) A Physiological Adaptation Module (PAM) that tracks metabolic changes and adapts AID parameters accordingly, and (2) a Behavioral Adaptation Module (BAM) that provides information feedback...

Total Blood Carbon Monoxide (TBCO) showed promising results in improving accuracy of CO determinations in blood and presenting better stability to different storage conditions. Therefore, it was proposed as alternative biomarker to carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) for CO poisoning diagnosis.
