The molecular background of disorders of sex development (DSD) in cats is poorly recognized. In this study we present cytogenetic, molecular and histological analyses of four cats subjected for the analysis due to ambiguous external genitalia. Three cases, with rudimentary penises and an abnormal position of the urethral orifice, represented different types of hypospadias. The fourth case had a normal penis, a blind vulva and spermatogenetically active testes. Histological studies showed structures typical of testes, but spermatogenic activity was observed in two cats only...

BACKGROUND: The role for neoadjuvant systemic therapy in resectable pancreas adenocarcinoma remains undefined. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy of gemcitabine and oxaliplatin administered as preoperative therapy in patients with resectable pancreas adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Eligible patients were screened using computed tomography-pancreas angiography, laparoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography, and fine-needle aspiration cytology to identify 38 patients who received 4 cycles of neoadjuvant gemcitabine 1000 mg/m intravenously over 100 minutes and oxaliplatin 80 mg/m intravenously over 2 hours, every 2 weeks...

CONTEXT: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) also known as female androgenetic alopecia is a common condition afflicting millions of women that can be cosmetically disrupting. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for obtaining optimal outcome. This review addresses the clinical presentation of female pattern hair loss, its differential diagnosis and treatment modalities. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A) Diffuse thinning of the crown region with preservation of the frontal hairline (Ludwig's type) B) The "Christmas tree pattern" where the thinning is wider in the frontal scalp giving the alopecic area a triangular shaped figure resembling a christmas tree...

INTRODUCTION: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss, however current treatment options are limited and moderately effective. In the past few years, there has been an increased interest in deciphering the molecular mechanisms responsible for this disorder, which has opened the possibility of novel treatments that promise to not only stimulate hair growth, but also to induce formation of new hair follicles. AREAS COVERED: The future holds more effective topical treatments with less systemic side effects (such as topical 5-alfa-reductase inhibitors), prostaglandin analogs and antagonists, medications which act through the Wnt signaling pathway, stem cells for hair regeneration, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and more effective ways of transplanting hair...

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common urinary disorders in elderly men. The symptoms of this disease are increased prostate size, bladder outlet obstruction and lower urinary tract disorders. It influences bladder infections, bladder stone formation and increases the risk of urinary retention which can cause renal failure. It is necessary for the disease to be treated operatively. The number of conducted surgical interventions for pharmacotherapy has been significantly reduced in recent years due to increased efficacy in conservative therapy including combined treatment mostly with two groups of drugs: finasteride and alpha-blockers with different pharmacological activities...

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase status, homocysteine and lipoproteins levels have been associated with severity of disease and both rapid and sustained virological response (SVR) in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (CHC). We aimed to assess the association of homocysteine and MTHFR status with serum cholesterol levels and their potential links to both histological findings and virological response, in patients with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV). A total of 119 consecutive patients were evaluated by biopsy and metabolic measurements...

INTRODUCTION: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition affecting older men. Bothersome symptoms can progress to serious complications such as acute urinary retention (AUR) requiring surgical intervention. Dutasteride, a dual 5-alfa-reductase (5AR) inhibitor (5ARI), is a recently introduced therapy for the treatment of BPH. AIMS: The objective of this article is to review the evidence for the treatment of BPH with dutasteride. EVIDENCE REVIEW: Evidence from large clinical studies shows that men with an enlarged prostate achieve a measurable decrease in prostate volume by up to 26% after 4 years of treatment with dutasteride and urinary symptoms improve after 6 months of treatment...

UNLABELLED: Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and statin use have been associated with higher sustained virological response (SVR) rates in patients receiving chronic hepatitis C therapy. However, these relationships have not been well characterized in randomized controlled trials. Furthermore, little is known about the relationship between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and virological response. To determine whether baseline LDL or HDL levels and statin use affect SVR rates, we retrospectively evaluated the IDEAL (Individualized Dosing Efficacy Versus Flat Dosing to Assess Optimal Pegylated Interferon Therapy) trial, in which 3070 treatment-naive, hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1-infected patients were treated for up to 48 weeks in one of the following arms: (1) peginterferon (PEG-IFN) alfa-2b at 1...

AIM: Most patients with advanced prostate cancer respond to androgen inhibition with or without antiandrogens. Progression to androgen-independent prostate cancer takes 5-7 years and is characterized by biochemical or diagnostic changes, despite testosteronemia levels similar to those after castration. Dutasteride, a 5-alfa-reductase types 1 and 2 inhibitor, is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In prostate cancer, 5-alfa-reductase type 1 expression is greater than in BPH, but no differences in 5-alfa-reductase type 2 expression have been observed between metastatic prostate cancer and BPH...

Diagnosis of ambiguous genitalia in a newborn is an emergency that can be difficult to manage, not only because salt wasting entities must be ruled out, but also due to the importance of gender assignment before psychological gender is established. We report two cases of male pseudohermaphroditism, a true hermaphroditism and a 5-alfa-reductase deficiency. The physiology of sexual differentiation and diagnosis, as well as the management of these infants, are discussed.

PURPOSE: Combined inhibition of ribonucleotide reductase (RR) and thymidylate synthase (TS), the enzymes responsible for a balanced supply of nucleotides for DNA synthesis, has been shown to induce synergistic antiproliferative effects in vitro. In the clinic, prolonged infusion of the RR inhibitor, hydroxyurea (HU), may be more effective than bolus or oral administration of drug. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether dose intensification of parenteral hydroxyurea in combination with fluorouracil could enhance the response rates of the combination against refractory upper gastrointestinal malignancies...

Medical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia is reviewed by the author. Experiences with herbal extracts have been known for more than 2 decades. Treating benign prostatic hyperplasia with these extracts are recommended in initial phase. Effectiveness of these drugs are approved by some placebo controlled double blind studies. However effectiveness of these are not as good as medical drugs'. It is well known that they have no side effects and are cheaper than medicines. Prostate volume is decreased and mechanical component of dysuria is improved by treating for long time (months, years) with 5 alfa reductase finasterid which contain hormone...

In this study, the activity of the glutathione related enzymes, namely glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GSSG-R), Selenium-dependent and -independent glutathione peroxidase (GPX) of various TGC tumors (n = 18) obtained from untreated patients, was compared to that of the corresponding enzymes of normal testicular tissues (n = 5). The enzymes of all tumorous tissues except teratomas were significantly less active, than the corresponding enzymes of nontumorous tissues. The GST was in seminomas 4...

The plasma levels of androstenedione (A), testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin (PRL) were studied in 15 men (aged 24-50 years) with chronic renal failure under periodic peritoneal dialysis, before and after 50 mg of elemental zinc (Zn) orally, twice a day for three weeks. Before treatment, they were divided into three groups: group I, plasma A above normal and PRL less than 100 ng/ml; group II, low or normal A levels with PRL less than 100 ng/ml; and group III, normal or high A levels with PRL greater than 100 ng/ml...

BPH is a very diffuse condition among males increasing in incidence with the age. This explains the large interest in the evaluation of the different strategies concerning BPH treatment. The gold standard has still to be considered the transurethral resection of the prostate which all the other treatments must be compared to. More recently as alternatives to the invasive therapy, so called minimally invasive treatments have been proposed (thermotherapy, prostate dilatation, intraprostatic stents) whose real significance is not completely evaluable yet...
